MARAD to Mark the Return of MV Cape Ray
Maritime (MARAD) Administrator Paul N. Jaenichen will host a ceremony on Friday, September 19, 2014 in Portsmouth, Va. to honor the civilian crew who helped to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons at sea aboard the MV Cape Ray. The MV Cape Ray, crewed by all-volunteer U.S. Merchant Mariners, supported an international effort with China, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Norway, Russia and the U.K. to destroy Syrian chemical weapons and agents at sea.

Video: Submarine John Warner Launched for Testing
Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) launched the Virginia-class submarine John Warner (SSN 785) into the James River on September 10 at the company's Newport News Shipbuilding division, kicking off the final outfitting, testing and crew certification phase of construction prior to sea trials next year. "The John Warner team has made tremendous progress over the last year," said Jim Hughes, Newport News' vice president of submarines and fleet support. A video of the launching is available here.
World’s Largest Iceberg Continues to Break Apart
The United States National Ice Center (NIC) named three new icebergs after a previous iceberg B15T broke into four pieces. B15T remains, while the resultant icebergs are named B15Z, B15AA and B15AB. B15T is the largest surviving remnant of the largest ever recorded iceberg B15, which calved from the Ross Ice Shelf in March of 2000 and was roughly the size of Jamaica when it originally separated from Antarctica.
Arctic Wreck Found after 169 Years
After more than 169 years, Canadian researchers discovered one of the two ships from the doomed Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin, cracking one of the largest mysteries in sea exploration. The wreck was found some 11 meters below the surface using a ROV recently acquired by Parks Canada. It is unknown whether the ship is HMS Erebus or HMS Terror, though researches expect to determine its identity within several days.

URAG Orders Two ASD Tugs from Damen
URAG, a German port and offshore towage provider based in Bremerhaven, has placed an order for two Damen ASD 2411 tugs. The contract was signed at the SMM exhibition in Hamburg. This contract follows an order placed in September 2013 for an identical vessel which is under management by Lütgens & Reimers (L&R) in Hamburg. L&R is an affiliated company of URAG, both being part of the LINNHOFF Schiffahrt Group.
Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Delivers Fourth PSV
Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) delivered the fourth high value platform supply vessel (PSV) for BP Shipping at its main shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. HMD won four PSVs from BP Shipping in March 2012 and already delivered three same type vessels from January to July this year. The PSV, named NS Frayja and measuring 97 meters in length, 20 meters in width and 8.5 meters in depth, is equipped with a variety of up-to-date technologies including oil recovery operation and dynamic positioning system.

iSURVEY has been awarded a two-year contract with offshore vessel owner, Island Offshore Management, which will see iSURVEY AS provide positioning services to Island Offshore as part of a call off arrangement. Operations have already commenced on the first vessel, Island’s DP2 Light construction vessel, the Island Valiant. Impact of Upcoming Regulations on Wreck Removal
The Nairobi International Convention on wreck removal was ratified by India recently and will be enforceable from April next year. This will place financial responsibility for the removal of certain hazardous wrecks on shipowners. Acknowledging this change, the IRClass Academy of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) held a one-day seminar on Managing the Risk of Wreck Removal Liability on September 13, 2014 at the Head Office of IRClass in Powai, Mumbai.

Maersk Sees US Approval of Shipping Alliance as Formality
U.S. regulatory approval of a proposed shipping alliance involving AP Moeller Maersk should be a formality, the Danish company's chief executive said on Wednesday. Incat Crowther announced the launch and sea trials of Muslim Magomayev, a first-of-type 70m Catamaran Fast Crew Boat (FCB). Constructed by Incat Tasmania, Muslim Magomayev is compliant with IMO HSC code and complete with a crew transfer system consisting of dynamic positioning equipment class (DP2) coupled with a walk-to-work stabilized access platform.
