U.S. Surface Navy Priorities Updated
The progress we have made in understanding and funding manpower shortages, establishing and funding defendable maintenance requirements, stabilizing procurement accounts, and the successful deployment of the littoral combat ship USS Freedom to the Western Pacific have led me to reassess the N96 Surface Warfare priorities. As President Obama highlighted in his Defense Strategic Guidance, the center of world mass is moving east towards Asia.

USCG: Marijuana Use Unacceptable for Mariners
The U.S. Coast Guard issued a notice to ensure that mariners, marine employers, Medical Reviewing Officers and the public are knowledgeable of the continuing prohibition of marijuana use by those serving in safety-sensitive positions in the maritime transportation industry. The Coast Guard said it is important to note that marijuana remains a drug listed in Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.
Tug Sinks Off of New York
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, a 26-foot tugboat lost control of the barge it was towing off Atlantic Beach, N.Y., Monday evening. Coast Guard and state officials are responding to mitigate any hazards to the waterways and beaches nearby. The Coast Guard was notified at 7:35 p.m. on Monday night that the towing vessel “PUSHY” had lost control of the 125-foot deck barge it was towing following an interaction with a large swell off of Atlantic Beach, N.Y.

Jargoon announced that a new interface to AIS Hub has been added to their Seall Passage Planner (SPP). The passage planning software which was launched in November 2013, provides Automatic Identification System (AIS) by using the SPP Virtual AIS Radar. This feature allows the mariner to quickly access the vessel traffic in any areas within the coverage of the Hub’s traffic tracking service, and display the collated data to the mariner during passage planning.
