Wärtsilä to Power Advanced UK Research Vessel
Wärtsilä has been awarded the contract to supply the propulsion equipment for a new, state-of-the-art, research vessel. The vessel will be operated by the UK's Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), and is to be built at the C.N.P. Freire S.A. shipyard in Spain. CMA CGM Figaro Returns to Savannah
The CMA CGM Figaro made its second call on the Port of Savannah on Dec. 10. The 8,500-TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity vessel covers the U.S. West Coast, Far East and U.S. East Coast trade via the Suez Canal. As one of the larger vessels calling on the U.S. East Coast, the Figaro allows American companies to better compete on a global scale by loading more exports and transporting them overseas quicker.
Signal International Completes Mobile Yard Renovations
Signal International Inc. recently completed a $9m yard and drydock renovation on its ship repair facility in Mobile, Alabama. Signal Ship Repair (SSR), the company’s most recent acquisition, is the flagship vessel repair and new construction division for ships, workboats, and tugs in the Signal family of yards. New ASD Tug: Brazil Designed & Built
The Brazilian Port of Recife/Pernambuco is served by a powerful new ship-handling tug. The owners, Navemar Transportes e Comércio Marítimo, took delivery of the vessel, named Navemar XIII, this past September 2010. The 98.4-ft azimuthing stern drive tug carries a 32.1-ft beam with a depth of 15.2 ft. The Z-drives are a pair of HRP-Series 7000, each drive is powered by a 2200 HP (1641 kW) at 1800-RPM Cummins QSK60 engines.

Pirated MV Eleni P Released
On 11 December 2010, the Liberian-flagged MV ELENI P was released from pirate control. The MV Eleni P, a Greek-owned bulk carrier, deadweight 72,119 tons, was pirated on 12 May 2010 approximately 250 nautical miles off the Omani coast. The MV Eleni P has a crew of 23, of which 19 are Filipinos, two are Greek, one Ukrainian and one Romanian.
