Bisso Marine Completes Crane Removal, Module Lifting Projects

Bisso Marine Co., Inc. salvage personnel recently completed the removal of three ship unloader cranes at the Elaine Street Wharf in New Orleans, La.

Bisso salvage personnel arrived at the project location and secured the derrick D/B Cairo and D/B Ajax to the first crane. The two derricks were secured to the crane’s truck assemblies and 500 tons of lift were applied to raise one side of the crane 18 in. and walk it to a stable section of the dock structure.

Salvage personnel then evaluated the situation and prepared the rigging necessary for lifting and dismantling the crane in nine sections. Bisso’s new 250-ton revolving crane, D/B Boaz, removed the 703-ton, 135-ft.-tall traveling ship unloader crane. After the successful removal of the damaged crane, Bisso was awarded the removal contract for two additional cranes deemed a threat to the environment and the adjoining Navigational Channel.

The entire three-crane project was completed in 23 days — well under the 60-day contract agreement.

Bisso Marine also recently completed two heavy lifting projects in one eight-hour day. D/B Cappy Bisso was used at Universal Fabricators yard in New Iberia, La., to lift a 600-ton production module and a 660- ton gas compressor onto an ocean going barge for the BP/Exxon deepwater Mica/Pompano project in the Gulf of Mexico.

D/B Lili Bisso was used to discharge from ship to barge 16 bundles of 115-ton steam generator coils in the Port of Mobile for an Alabama power plant currently under construction.
