US-based Smiths Detection wins contract from U. S. Navy for METMF(R) NEXGEN additional mobile weather information systems.

Smiths Detection announce a US$7.6-million contract to supply the U.S. Navy with additional mobile weather information systems to support mission planning and military operations for the Marine Corps.  Manufactured in Smiths Detection’s Edgewood, Md. plant, the systems are due for delivery by July 2013.

The Meteorological Mobile Facility (Replacement) Next Generation (METMF(R) NEXGEN) is a truck-mounted system that uses a mesoscale meteorological model to compile data from a variety of sources to provide a complete picture of current and future weather patterns within minutes. The system, which helps the military make critical battlefield decisions using information from both ground-based sensors and satellites, is ruggedized to cope with extreme environments.

Lance Roncalli, VP Sales of Americas and US Managing Director, Smiths Detection, said: “This sole source award further emphasizes Smiths Detection’s commitment to providing leading technology to the military and offers the Marine Corps an expeditionary, operationally relevant, affordable system.”
