DSO Gets AAA Credit Rating

Damen group’s Swedish shipyard, Damen Oskarshamnsvarvet (DSO) has had its credit rating, as awarded by European credit rating agency Bisnode, upgraded from B to AAA."With only 2.3% of companies in Sweden achieving the highest possible rating of AAA, this demonstrates that the shipyard is in excellent financial and commercial health," said a press release from the Dutch defence, shipbuilding, and engineering conglomerate.Flip van der Waal, who was appointed DSO managing director three years ago, is delighted with the accolade.

AKF Signs Pact with Fendercare

Damen Anchor & Chain Factory (AKF), the mooring and towing division of the Dutch shipbuilding Damen Group, signed a joint partnership agreement with Fendercare yesterday (June 12).The agreement came about from a mutual understanding that both parties’ clients were seeking wider availability of products, said a press release.Under the agreement, the partnership will build up a complementary stock of anchors, chains and chain fittings and conduct the installation of anchors and chains.Working together in this way will ensure the partnership’s clients of product availability from numerous…

Damen Delivers CSD500-S to ERA

Dutch shipbuilding conglomerate Damen Group announced that Damen Dredging Equipment has delivered CSD500-S, a fully customised cutter dredger for acidic environment,  to Australian customer, Energy Resources of Australia (ERA)."The Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD), which has been named the Brolga I, will work in an acidic environment with a pH of approximately 3 for which a wide array of adaptations have been incorporated," it said in a press release.The dredger has been shipped to Antwerp, where it was loaded on board a transport vessel bound for the north of Australia.

Shipyard Bijela: Concession to Consortium of Damen and Adriatic Marinas

Damen Shipyards Group, Adriatic Marinas and the Montenegrin Government have signed a contract for redevelopment of Bijela shipyard. Damen Lays Keel for New CEMEX Dredger

Damen Shipyards Group recently held a keel-laying ceremony for the CEMEX Go Innovation at Damen Shipyards Mangalia in Romania. The vessel is the first Damen MAD – the next generation of marine aggregate dredgers. The construction of the new vessel is drawing upon collaboration with multiple companies within the Damen Group, as well was with external partners, working together towards the development of a new standard in marine aggregate dredging.Damen has designed the future-proof vessel for long-lasting durability for operations in North Sea conditions over the coming decades.

Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam (DMSS) has announced the departure of Managing Director Frits van Dongen and the appointment of Eric Moerkerk in his place.During a party that was held at Damen Maaskant Shipyards Stellendam (DMSS) to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the yard, Frits van Dongen, who has worked at Damen for the past 40 years, with 25 of those as managing director of DMSS, handed over his responsibilities on the first of October to Eric Moerkerk.Eric was previously at Keppel Verolme, which became part of Damen in September 2016.

Damen’s 3rd Annual Workboat Festival

Last Thursday, Damen Shipyards Gorinchem hosted the Damen group’s third annual Workboat Festival. The event brought together more than 200 customers, media and industry partners, and 34 workboats, for an afternoon of presentations, demonstrations, product displays and interactive exhibits.The workboats ranged in size from ten-meter Stan Launches and Stan Tugs up to a 72-meter Stan Pontoon. In between were Fast Crew Suppliers, Stan Pilots, Stan Patrols, additional Stan Launches and Tugs, plus an Interceptor and a RHIB.

Damen to Convert Dredger to Dual-fuel LNG/MGO

Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has been awarded a contract to undertake the conversion of a dredger to dual-fuel capability combining LNG and MGO – a first of its kind project in Europe. The contract was awarded by Rouen-based GIE Dragages-Ports with regard to its 117m, 8500m³ trailing suction hopper dredger Samuel de Champlain, and the works will take place next year at Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque. The conversion is part of an EU-supported initiative to promote LNG propulsion in short-sea vessels operating along the European Atlantic coast.

ISA Towage B.V. (formerly known as V.O.F. Sleepboot ISA) has taken delivery of a Shoalbuster 3209 from Damen Shipyard Hardinxveld (DSHa). 'Team Damen' Unites Dutch and Australian Industry

Australian Maritime Systems Group is entering into a joint venture with one of Europe’s leading marine technology companies as part of a tender for Australia’s next giant defence contract. The Brisbane-based company is partnering with Dutch firm Alewijnse Marine to support the Damen Group’s bid to build the next generation of 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the Royal Australian Navy. The vessels will be mainly constructed in Adelaide and Perth, but AMSG’s involvement would generate highly-skilled and long-term electrical engineering jobs for the Queensland-based company.

New ASD Tug for Saam Smit in Panama

Saam Smit Towage has ordered a new ASD (Azimuth Stern Drive) 2411 tug from Damen Shipyards, for operations in the port of Colón, Panama. Built for stock at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, it was subsequently transported to the Netherlands for finishing. With the agreement in place the new vessel, named the SST Portobelo, is now underway to join the 11-strong Saam Smit tug fleet in Panama. The SST Portobelo is the first ASD 2411 for Saam Smit in Panama. In October 2015, the company placed an order for an ASD Tug 2913, named the SST Rambala, which was delivered in May 2016.

Damen Shipyard Group’s Australian team has delivered two more industry briefings to potential suppliers from Australian industry ahead of its bid submission for the design and build of 12 offshore patrol vessels (OPV). Following February’s events held in Adelaide and Perth, Damen hosted a third in Brisbane on March 15 and a fourth two days later in Melbourne. The Damen group is one of three international shipbuilders shortlisted for the building of the 12 steel-hulled OPVs to replace Australia’s current fleet of Armidale Class patrol boats.

Damen Secures Nigerian Patrol Vessel Order

Just over a year after it took delivery of the second of two FCS 3307 Patrol vessels, Homeland Integrated Offshore Services Limited (Homeland) of Nigeria has ordered one more of the same class with an option on a second, to be named Guardian 3 and Guardian 4. Like their two predecessors, the two vessels are being supplied as a turnkey solution. The Damen Group is taking care of delivery and crew training, as well as the design and build. Damen’s Local Service Hub in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, will ensure that maintenance, repairs and any additional support is handled by Damen engineers.

Damen Dredging Equipment Officially Reopened

Kommer Damen, Chairman of the Damen Shipyards Group, officially reopened the offices of Damen Dredging Equipment (DDE) in Nijkerk on November 9 following an extensive refit and extension. Among the facility’s improvements, the building now provides visitors with a complete ‘dredging experience’, the company said, starting with displays in the hallways illustrating the challenges of living in the Low Countries and explaining why dredging has been an integral part of its history.

Damen Partners with TeamTec for BWTS

Damen Green Solutions has signed a letter of intent with Norwegian company TeamTec to supply and service the AVITALISTM ballast water treatment system. The system combines filtration and a proven, eco-friendly chemical treatment solution optimized for medium-sized to large vessels. The system is highly effective in water of any salinity, turbidity or temperature. The intention is to advance to a full partnership by the end of 2016. Currently AVITALISTM is undergoing ship board testing IMO type approval and USCG land-based testing.

Jumbo’s Heavy Lift Crane Vessel Repaired

A three-week repair project on the Jumbo Javelin, a DP2 Heavy Lift Crane Vessel owned and operated by Jumbo, has been completed Damen Shiprepair Van Brink Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The major aspect of the repair was the replacement of the frames of 15 box coolers. To minimize the time spent in dock, 12 of these were prefabricated prior to the Jumbo Javelin arriving at Van Brink, and the remaining three were built during the docking period. The majority of the steel work was performed by Damen Group company and steel specialist Niron Staal Amsterdam.

LNG Carrier Coral Medusa Goes in for Repair

The gas carrier Coral Medusa, owned and operated by the Anthony Veder Group, has completed her intermediate survey at Damen Shiprepair Harlingen. The intermediate survey was scheduled and executed while the ship was under gas vapors from her last cargo. Damen Shiprepair & Conversion was able to offer three locations, Flushing, Schiedam and Harlingen, that are certified to repair gas tankers which are not gas-free. Harlingen had immediate availability so the Coral Medusa docked on July 19.
