WinGD and Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Engine Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) signed a joint development agreement to together develop engine solutions that further reduce GHG emissions from methane while improving engine efficiency and footprint for reduced costs. The signing ceremony was hosted by HHI-EMD President & Chief Operating Officer Kwang-hean An and joined by WinGD’s Vice President R&D, Dominik Schneiter and Global Director Sales, Volkmar Galke who travelled from their headquarters in Switzerland.The cooperation will aim to further enhance WinGD’s dual-fuel, low-pressure X-DF engines.

MAN, Hyundai to Develop LPG Dual-fuel Engines

MAN Diesel & Turbo said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) for the development and production of MAN B&W ME-LGIP dual-fuel engines. Upon completion, HHI-EMD will be able to deliver liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuelled, two-stroke-propulsion engines. With the MoU, LPG joins the list of liquid, environmentally-friendly fuels that can power MAN Diesel & Turbo’s portfolio of two-stroke, dual-fuel engines, which are available from all licensees.

Rolls-Royce to Power Korean Naval Frigates

Rolls-Royce said it has won a contract to supply MT30 marine gas turbines to power the next three ships in the Republic of Korea Navy’s Daegu-class frigate program. The frigates are intended for a variety of missions including anti-submarine warfare, anti-air warfare, patrol, surveillance, search and rescue, protection of EEZ and transport. In all Eight Daegu-class frigates (also known as FFX Batch 2) are scheduled to be built, the first of which is being built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) and was launched at DSME's Okpo shipyard in June 2016.

Hyundai Heavy Sails Back to Profit in Q1

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has posted a net profit of KRW462.3bn ($409.6m) for the first quarter of 2017, making it the fifth consecutive quarterly profit for the group. This represents a surge of 90% from the previous corresponding quarter. However, sales fell 1.9 percent to 10.76 trillion won. HHI mainly attributes the whooping quarterly operating profit increase to 127.1 billion won operating profits from HHI’s Shipbuilding Division which is 251% up from the first three months last year. The strong earnings of shipbuilding business were attributable to an increased building volume of high value-added ships that HHI has competitive edge on, stabilization of manufacturing processes, and cost reduction efforts.

SK Shipping Selects 5X72DF for LNG Carriers

Securing the position of its low-speed low-pressure X‑DF engines as market leaders, Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has been selected to supply two 5-cylinder X72DF (5X72DF) engines for each of a pair of 180,000 m3 LNG carriers ordered by South Korean shipowner SK Shipping Co., Ltd (SK). The shipbuilding contract was signed in May 2016. The twin-skeg LNG carriers will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and the engines by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd / Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD). They will be fitted with a GTT Mark III Flex membrane cargo containment system. In addition, the ships will feature HHI’s Hi-SGAS system combining fuel system supply for the two 5X72DF engines with the Hi‑SGAS system that can re-liquefy 100 % of the boil off gas (BOG) from the cargo.

Alfa Laval PureNOx Prime Ordered for Five VLECs

Alfa Laval’s new PureNOx Prime solution for water treatment in Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), will be part of EGR systems on five very large ethane carriers (VLECs) to be operated by United Ethane Carriers (UEC). This order from MAN Diesel & Turbo comes only a short time after PureNOx Prime was introduced to the market. UEC, a joint venture between Jaccar Holdings and Hartmann Group for the commercial management of ethane carriers, will be the operator of five VLECs to be built for ship owner JHW Engineering & Contracting.

IMO Tier III compliant Wärtsilä X72 Engine Passes Test

Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) and its two-stroke engine manufacturer Hyundai Heavy Industries - Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) announced the successful testing and delivery of their first IMO Tier III compliant Wärtsilä X72 diesel engine. Built at HHI-EMD’s works in Ulsan Korea, the six-cylinder, Wärtsilä X72 diesel engine employs a compact, pre-turbocharger selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. HHI Inks Local Equipment MOU

Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced today it has signed a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Establishment of Industrial Cluster for Localizing Marine Equipment Between Marine Equipment Manufacturing and Supply Companies” at Hotel Hyundai Ulsan. Under the MOU, HHI will join forces with KOMERI, a domestic marine equipment research institute and 25 local marine equipment manufacturers to cooperate in the field of research and planning, product development, verification test, certification and engineer exchanges. Starting with the goal of localizing 18 marine equipment including pressure sensors for marine engines and gas injection valves, the three parties plan to increase production of the equipment that they can produce independently.

New HHI HiMSEN Diesel Engine Gains Class Approvals

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) has  won type approval for the new 35,300 bhp HiMSEN H46/60V engine from 9 classification societies. The type approval test completion of the IMO Tier III compliant HiMSEN H46/60V expands Hyundai Heavy’s medium speed marine engine line-up to cover output from 780 bhp to 35,300 bhp. The HiMSEN engine (Hi-touch Marine & Stationary Engine) was originally developed by Hyundai Heavy in 2000. Since then, the Company has churned out 7,200 units for marine propulsion and land-based power plants.

Engine of the Future is Already Available

First commercial ME-GI engine revealed at major event in Korea. At a large customer event in Korea on 9 November 2012, Hyundai revealed the first, commercial MAN B&W ME-GI engine. The ME-GI is a gas-injection, dual-fuel, low-speed diesel engine that, when acting as main propulsion in LNG carriers or any other type of merchant marine vessel, can burn gas or fuel-oil at any ratio, depending on the energy source available on board and dictated by relative cost of combustibles and owner preference. The ME-GI type was successfully demonstrated at the ceremony in Korea, culminating in it achieving 100% load when powered by gas with a minimal amount of pilot oil for ignition. The engine subsequently successfully passed its Type Approval Test at the end of November.

Wärtsilä to Supply Main Engines for Kuwait Oil Tanker

Wärtsilä's RT-flex common rail engine technology provides environmental benefits including low fuel consumption and reductions in exhaust emissions. The engine waste heat is utilized to produce onboard electricity. These features help maintaining and operating seaborne transportation in more economical and sustainable ways. Wärtsilä will supply the main engines for a series of vessels being built for Kuwait Oil Tanker Co. (KOTC), a Subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation. Four VLCCs (Very Large Crude Oil Carriers), one Aframax tanker and four medium-range tankers are being built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea.

Wärtsilä Main Engines Ordered for Nine Kuwait Oil Tankships

Wärtsilä to supply main engines for a series of 9 large vessels being built by Daewoo for Kuwait Oil Tanker Co. Four VLCCs (Very Large Crude Oil Carriers), one Aframax tanker and four medium-range tankers are being built at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) shipyard in South Korea. The VLCCs will be fitted with 7-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex 82T engines and a Waste Heat Recovery System, which utilizes exhaust gas energy  to generate steam which is used to operate a turbo generator that produces ship's electricity supply.

Hyundai Starts Export of LNG Fueled Engines

The new gas engine runs on liquefied natural gas rather than heavy crude oil and has a maximum power output of 13,000 bhp. The HiMSEN H35/40GV can be used to generate power for onshore power plants, commercial ships, and offshore facilities including drillships. The new engine emits 20% less carbon dioxide than diesel engines, reduces NOx emissions by 97% to reach world’s lowest level of 50 ppm, and improves engine performance by 47%. MAN B&W S80ME-C9 Engine Passes Type Approval Test

MAN Diesel & Turbo has announced that its latest, mark-9, 80-cm-bore engine recently passed its Type Approval Test (TAT). The super-long-stroke S80ME-C9 engine now powers a Maersk Line container vessel and successfully completed its TAT at HHI-EMD, the Engine & Machinery Division of Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., in Korea. More Than 500 Wärtsilä RT-Flex Common-Rail Engines Sold

Orders for Wärtsilä RT-flex electronically-controlled common-rail marine engines have passed the 500-engine mark since the RT-flex common rail system was introduced in 1998. Although many of these are of the most powerful RT-flex96C type, progress has been achieved with the smallest, the RT-flex50, which has a rapidly growing order book. The new RT-flex82C and RT-flex82T engine types have also made a good start with orders being booked by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co Ltd and Doosan Engine Co Ltd, both in Korea. The RT-flex common-rail system was introduced by Wärtsilä in 1998 when it was first applied in a research engine. The first production engine then went into service in September 2001.

HHI Signs LNG Cargo Pump Deal

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) signed a technical agreement for a cargo pump for LNG carriers with Carter Cryogenics of the U.S. The agreement was signed by Choi Weon-gil, COO of HHI¡¯s Engine & Machinery Division, and Mr. Lance A. Schroeder, vice president of Carter Cryogenics. The LNG carrier's cargo pump is a cryogenic pump at the bottom of containment tanks used to load and unload liquefied natural gas at -163oC. There are eight to ten pumps equipped on each LNG carrier. Under the technical agreement with Carter Cryogenics HHI will manufacture and market the pumps with plans to localize cargo pump production through the technical development and transfer of technology from Carter Cryogenics in early 2008.
