New Zealand Ports Order Damen’s Dredger

Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with Port Otago and its partner Napier Port for the delivery of a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD) 1000.At nearly 60 meters in length, the dredger has a maximum hopper volume of 1000m3 with twin azimuth thrusters and bow thruster to ensure appropriate maneuverability in the long entrance to Port Chalmers and Dunedin.The TSHD will arrive in New Zealand with a Green Passport under the IMO rules, after the completion of construction at Shipyard 189 in Haiphong in Vietnam.Set for delivery in 2027…

Just Do It! NIKE Commits to CMA CGM's New E-Barge Vessel Project

CMA CGM will build and deploy a zero emissions inland transport solution in Vietnam, a solution the company says is a "100% green electricity barge coupled with dedicated charging infrastructures" supplied by a new solar farm at Gemalink terminal in Cai Mep (25% owned by CMA CGM Group). German Lawyers Want Explosives Shipment to Israeli Contractor Blocked

Damen Christens New Tug Built for Muller Dordrecht

Damen Delivers New Tug to Iskes

On May 25 in IJmuiden, the Netherlands, Damen Shipyards Group delivered an ASD Tug 2312 named Jupiter to Iskes. The vessel will operate in the ports of IJmuiden and Amsterdam carrying out regular port towage duties and the tug is also capable of handling (crane) barges.Damen signed the contract for the vessel with Iskes in July 2018, at the ITS Marseille and developed the ASD Tug 2312 together with Iskes.Damen sales manager Joost van der Weiden said, “Iskes gave us a lot of valuable input for the design of this new class of tug.

The members of THE Alliance, Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express, and Yang Ming have welcomed Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) as a new core member of THE Alliance.With the US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) acceptance of HMM membership, THE Alliance offers an attractive upgraded product package and it will be launched around April 1st, 2020.Based on the existing comprehensive network of THE Alliance, the newly en-hanced product package will offer increasing frequency particularly from South East Asia, as well as new direct port coverage and improved transit times.Now that HMM joined The Alliance, its new offering for 2020 will consist of 33 services, 280 ships and a coverage of 78 ports globally.

MEPSEAS Project Event on Viet Nam's Seas

Iran, Vietnam to Improve Maritime Co-op

Iran's Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Rastad is in talks with Vietnamese officials with the aim of improving trade and connectivity capacities between the two countries.According to Islamic Republic News Agency, the managing director of the Ports and Maritime Organization met Vietnamese national shipping authorities during a visit to Vietnam and discussed the trade and communications capacities of the two countries. The discussions focused on the launch of a shipping line between ports of the two countries.Rastad also met with the Deputy Minister of Transportation during his visit to Vietnam and talked through the trade and communications capacities of the two countries on the development of port and maritime cooperation.

Yang Ming Announces New Intra-Asia Service

Taiwanese ocean shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation announced a new Intra-Asia service KVM(Korea–Vietnam–Malaysia Service) jointly operated by YM and APL Co. Pte Ltd through its CNC brand with effect on February 21st, 2019.The service will be operated with three 1,800-TEU container vessels, one by YM and two by APL Co. Ptd Ltd via its CNC brand.The full port rotation will be Kwangyang, Pusan, Kaohsiung, Ho Chi Minh, Port Kelang, Singapore, Haiphong, Kaohsiung, Kwangyang. A round trip will take 21 days.The new service is expected to connect Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia more efficiently and provide customers with more convenient and excellent delivery service.

Maritime Counter-Terrorism Training in Viet Nam

International Maritime Organization (IMO)  is assisting the Government of Viet Nam to implement international counter-terrorism measures involving the maritime sector.The training workshop is part of an on-going project with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, which assists States’ capability to implement and enforce maritime safety and security legislation to support countering terrorism, piracy and armed robbery against ships.The exercise took place in Hai Phong, Viet Nam (9-10 January). Vietnam to Build Two Terminals in Lach Huyen Port

Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines), the state-owned marine transporter, won approval recently to build two large container terminals at Lach Huyen Port in northern Hai Phong City in a 7 trillion dong ($302 million) project.According to Nguyen Canh Tinh, director of the state-run Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines), said its subsidiary, Haiphong Port JSC, would build terminals No.3 and No.4 at the port.He said the Haiphong Port JSC used to work mainly at Hoang Dieu terminal, which has now been taken over for the construction of an urban area, and so new terminals are needed in its place.The two proposed terminals would have a total length of 750 meters and the capacity to handle vessels of up to 100…

MarAd: Buzby in Hanoi for Meetings

On July 11-12, 2018, Maritime Administrator Mark Buzby met with ‎the Vietnam Maritime Administration\\'s (VINAMARINE) Administrator Dr. Nguyen Xuan Sang and Deputy Administrator Dr. Bui Thien Thu in Hanoi, Vietnam. This meeting, under the implementation of the US-Vietnam Bilateral Agreement, included discussions on the topics of maritime policy, vessels safety and security, port infrastructure development, maritime workforce and mariner training. On July 12th, Administrator Buzby visited the ports of Hai Phong and Lach Huyen. The US Coast Guard and US Department of State also participated.

Vietnam Opens Haiphong International Container Terminal

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has announced that its joint venture company Haiphong International Container Terminal held an opening ceremony for the new Haiphong International Container Terminal (HICT) at Lach Huyen Port, Vietnam on May 13. HICT is the first terminal in Northern Vietnam with a berth deep enough to allow calls by 14,000TEU containerships. It will meet customer demands for shorter transit times and lower transport costs, while contributing to economic growth in Northern Vietnam, including Haiphong industrial park, since large-size container vessels, which offer direct links to Asia and North America/Europe, can call at the port.

APL's Direct Service to Chu Lai

APL announced that APL Chu Lai, a 1,200-TEU vessel, has made her maiden direct call at the Chu Lai Tam Hiep Port on 24 March. This officially commences APL’s new weekly Chu Lai Haiphong Express (CHX) service that is delivering its first inbound shipment of automobile components from Japan trans-shipped via Shekou. The cargo has duly arrived for the newly-opened Truong Hai Automobile Joint-Stock company (THACO) – Mazda owned plant situated in the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone. Speaking at an event graced by Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, APL Global Commercial Head, Indika Dassanayake said, “We are excited to be opening a direct sea route to Chu Lai in Central Vietnam via the APL Chu Lai Haiphong Express service.

Vietnam Sets Up Shipping Alliance

The maritime shipping crisis has forced shipping firms worldwide to join alliances to improve their competitiveness. Such alliances have also been set up in Vietnam. Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) CEO Nguyen Canh Tinh said connecting subsidiaries to improve resources and competitiveness, and to open new routes, is one of the most important plans being implemented by Vinalines. The container transport route to Hong Kong, a service jointly provided by Vinalines Container and Bien Dong Shipping, two subsidiaries of Vinalines, was launched recently. Container ships of the two companies will carry 1,800 TEUs per 14-day round trip on HCMC – Hai Phong – Hong Kong – Hai Phong – HCMC route and will dock at Tan Vu, Tan Thuan and HIT (Hong Kong) ports.

Damen Consolidates Australian Partnership

Damen Shipyards Group recently visited Adelaide to further consolidate their partnership with ASC Shipbuilding and Forgacs Marine and Defence (Forgacs) (ASC Forgacs Shipbuilding) to build twelve Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) for the Australian Navy and to explore domestic and export opportunities for both the commercial and naval markets. Roland Briene, Damen’s Area Director Asia Pacific, also highlighted two important milestones for Damen in Australia: the 5th anniversary of Damen’s Australian company, Damen Services Brisbane, and the intention to establish a second long-term service hub in support of the SEA 1180 program. Damen, as one of the three designers competing for the OPV program, is fully committed to consolidating their commitment to Australia.

NYK Launches Car Transport Service to Hai Phong

NYK has started a new car transport service “Ruffles Ao Dai RORO Express (REX)” linking Hai Phong in Northern Vietnam with Ho Chi Minh and Laem Chabang (near Bangkok). On October 8, the NYK-operated car carrier Modern Link arrived in Hai Phong for the first call. And the ceremony to commemorate was held attended by the top managements of the Port of Hai Phong, Tan Vu Terminal, among others. The previous service for Northern Vietnam called at the port of Cai Lan is once a month. Now the new service calls the port of Hai Phong, which is close to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, and increases the number of calls to twice a month. NYK will attempt to accommodate demand for the transportation of finished cars to Vietnam…
