MAN's Part-Load Optimization a Fuel Saver

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Part-Load Optimization is a tuning method designed to optimize fuel-oil consumption during the part-load operation of four-stroke, small-bore MAN auxiliary engines. “Part-Load Optimization works on the principle that fuel consumption is reduced at low and part load at the expense of a higher fuel consumption in the high-load range, without exceeding the IMO NOx limit,” explained Finn Fjeldhøj – Head of Small-Bore, Four-Stroke Engineering – MAN Diesel & Turbo. “We can deliver new engines pre-optimized or retrofit as necessary.

MAN Diesel UK, MAN Turbo Merge

With immediate effect, Stockport based MAN Diesel Ltd and its sister company MAN Turbo (UK) Ltd have merged operations in the UK to form a new organization, MAN Diesel & Turbo UK Ltd. All administration and finance departments from both companies have been centralized at the newly built MAN Diesel & Turbo UK head office complex in Stockport, Cheshire.  Also, as part of this merger, a new MAN Diesel & Turbo UK Sales office has been opened in Redhill, Surrey.  The merger of the two UK operations into one organization, follows the announcement of the integration of the individual parent companies, MAN Diesel SE and MAN Turbo AG.  The Headquarters of MAN Diesel & Turbo SE is based in Augsburg, Germany.  

MAN Diesel & Turbo Signs License Agreement at SMM

MAN Diesel & Turbo has signed a four-stroke license agreement with Rong An Power Machinery, a Chinese marine engine manufacturer. Dr. Stephan Timmermann, Executive Board Member MAN Diesel & Turbo, and David Deng, President Rong An, signed the new agreement on behalf of their respective companies on 7 September 2010 in a ceremony at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s stand at the SMM international marine trade fair in Hamburg. Rong An previously signed a two-stroke license agreement with MAN Diesel & Turbo in September 2008.  

Genset Delivery Sparks Chinese Celebration

SXD-produced 32/40 gensets to provide power to CNOOC offshore platform Representatives from China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), classification societies, local government officials and MAN Diesel & Turbo gathered on 18 November to celebrate the delivery of two 12V32/40 gensets, constructed by MAN Diesel & Turbo licensee, Shaanxi Diesel Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (SXD). The new engines will replace older models aboard ‘Liuhua 11-1’, a working, offshore hydrocarbon platform operated by CNOOC. SXD is a company of the northern Chinese CSIC Group of state-owned factories and shipyards.

MAN Extends Relationship with Mercy Ships

At a signing ceremony at the SMM 2016 Marine Trade Fair in Hamburg, MAN Diesel & Turbo expanded its partnership with Mercy Ships, international provider of charitable healthcare. Under the terms of the agreement, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s after-sales division, MAN PrimeServ, will provide spare parts for the four MAN 21/31 GenSets and other MAN installations aboard the hospital vessel MV Africa Mercy to an annual value of EUR 250,000. First SCR IMO Tier III Approval in Principle Awarded

MAN Diesel & Turbo reaches IMO Tier III milestone for entire four-stroke engine portfolio. At an awards ceremony held on April 15, 2015 at the PrimeServ Academy in Shanghai, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE was awarded approval in principle for its SCR system for the entire medium-speed engine portfolio fulfilling IMO Tier III regulations by the China Classification Society (CCS). Testing took place on an MAN 8L21/31 auxiliary engine with an integrated SCR system but the certificate applies to the entire medium-speed engine portfolio .

MAN Diesel Officially a European Company

The conversion of MAN B&W Diesel AG into a European Company (Societas Europaea, or SE for short) was concluded on August 31. At the same time the company will change its name into MAN Diesel SE, headquartered in Augsburg, Germany. By adopting SE status, the Executive Board intends to make the Diesel Engine Division of the MAN Group an even more international player showing a single face to the customer. In order to better organize the working of its committees, the Supervisory Board, which is made up of an international team headed by Håkan Samuelsson, has been reduced from 12 to 10 members, The Supervisory Board’s parity structure between the capital and the employee side will remain unchanged. Employee co-determination will be organised on a cross-border basis in future, too.

MAN Diesel chooses Marseille

To further its long-term relations with local clients and partners, MAN Diesel inaugurated its new hub in Marseille, on Thursday 9 July. Dr. Timmermann, Member of the Executive Board of MAN Diesel SE and Rémi Leport, Site Manager of this new hub, cut the red ribbon together. The Group’s French site, MAN Diesel SAS, based in Villepinte and Saint-Nazaire, has been developing an after sales service activity over the last 50 years for the S.E.M.T. Pielstick brand and for the MAN Diesel brand since 2006.

Merger Complete: MAN Diesel & Turbo SE

The merger announced between MAN Diesel SE and MAN Turbo AG to form MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, based in Augsburg, is now complete, the corresponding entry having been made in the register of companies. The process of amalgamating the two former MAN sister companies into one enterprise has thus been achieved. In economic terms, the merger has come into effect retroactively as of 1 January 2010. MAN Diesel Establishes New York Service Center

MAN Diesel has extended its capabilities to provide after-sales service to all customers calling on the east coast ports. H.W. Ramberg Incorporated (HWR) is aimed to enhance MAN Diesel’s technical and support with its personnel and equipment. HWR’s 80 years of service experience in the maritime community, over 35 years as an MAN Diesel Authorized Repair Shop for reconditioning and exchange, will continue to provide support to MAN Diesel’s customers. The agreement was expanded upon the acquisition in 1979 of B&W by the MAN AG Group. HWR thus became an Authorized Repair Shop for Augsburg, Germany and Copenhagen, Denmark, which has continued to present day.

MAN Diesel to Feature High-Speed Engines

MAN Nutzfahrzeuge will transfer part of its business involving high-speed engines to the group’s sister company, MAN Diesel. With effect from 1 January 2010, these activities will be integrated into MAN Diesel to form a Business Unit High Speed. The new Business Unit will offer diesel and gas engines in a performance range from 70 to 1,400 kW used in yachts, smaller working ships, locomotives and in decentralised energy supplies, for instance as emergency gensets. MAN Diesel Logs Historic Order

In this way, the engine’s end user, based P&O Ferries is anticipating the 2011 implementation of the second stage of the IMO MARPOL 73/78 Annex VI emissions regulations. Worth over $46.3m, the contract centering on the 48/60CR was signed by Jari Kujala, Purchasing Manager, Aker Yards Oy, Rauma, Finland and Prof. Dr. Wolfram Lausch, Senior Vice President at the MAN Diesel Marine Medium Speed Business Unit. The contract covers the main propulsion and onboard power supply equipment for two large ROPAX ferries being built by Aker Yards for P&O. On the engine side, for each ship MAN Diesel will supply four inline seven cylinder type 7L48/60CR main engines, each rated 7,600 kW at 500 rpm and four gen-sets based on inline seven cylinder type 7L 21/31 engines, each rated 1463 kWe at 1000 rpm.

ZGPT Delivers first License-built MAN Diesel Engine

Hangzhou ZhongGao Engine Co. (ZGPT) recently held a ceremony to celebrate both the delivery of its first license-built MAN Diesel 9L32/40 engine and the inauguration of production at the Hangzhou plant. ZGPT's President, Shi QingZhe, lead celebrations at the plant, located southwest of Shanghai in the province of Zhejiang. Invited guests included representatives from the shipping community as well as suppliers, contractors and government officials. MAN Diesel was represented by Hans J. Brenner, Managing Director of MAN Diesel Shanghai.

NOx-reduction System Ordered for Deepwater Vessel

MAN Diesel & Turbo won the contract to provide a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system for each of six MAN 16V32/44CR engines that will power the Petrofac JDS 6000 deepwater derrick-lay vessel ordered in January 2014 by international oil and gas services provider Petrofac. The SCR systems and engines will be constructed at MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Augsburg, Germany facility, while the vessel will be constructed by the ZPMC yard in China using a proprietary Petrofac design. First Tier-III-Compliant, Two-Stroke Engine Unveiled in Japan

The engine, an MAN B&W 6S46MC-C8 type capable of an output of almost 7 MW, was constructed in autumn 2010 by Hitachi Zosen Corporation at its Ariake works in southern Japan. The engine is bound for a general cargo carrier, to be built at the Nakai shipyard and scheduled to enter active service later this year. The vessel was ordered by Japanese customer,  BOT Lease Co. As a step ahead in the MAN Diesel & Turbo and SpecTec Group cooperation, on October 25, 2010, AMOS BS was installed at MAN Diesel & Turbo's PrimeServ location in . On October 26, 10members of MAN Diesel & Turbo staff were trained on AMOS BS main features, by Kim Pommegard and Jens Ipsen from SpecTec DK. SpecTec ILS Manager, Marco Vatteroni, gave his own contribution, showing how it is possible, in a few minutes, to automatically create an AMOS BS database by importing a MAN Diesel Shipdex dataset using AMOS Shipdex Interface. MAN Diesel & Turbo views this as an important step towards gaining experience with how ship owners deal with maintenance management.

MAN Diesel Renews Low-Speed Cooperations

MAN Diesel has renewed its low-speed license agreements with its Chinese partners. Furthermore the company, which forms the Diesel engine division of the MAN Group, signed a license agreement for a ten year period with the newly established joint venture CSSC-Mitsui Diesel Co, Ltd, known as CMD. The joint venture is owned by the largest Chinese and Japanese low-speed engine builders, Hudong and Mitsui, with the additional participation of CSSC. The renewal of the CSIC/CSOC – MAN Diesel licence agreement with the engine builders Dalian Marine Diesel and Yichang Marine Diesel took place in Beijing, while the licence agreement with CSSC/CSTC and the engine builders Hudong Heavy Machinery and CSSC-Mitsui (CMD) was signed in Shanghai. MAN & Statoil Sign Turbo-machinery Agreements

MAN Diesel & Turbo, Switzerland, signs to provide Norway's Statoil with new subsea compressor equipment & maintenance services. The Zurich-based MAN Diesel & Turbo Schweiz AG and Statoil have followed a joint subsea compressor qualification programme since 2005. In early 2011 Aker Solutions ASA, Statoil’s main contractor for the Asgard subsea project, awarded a contract to MAN to build the world's first subsea compressors for gas production on the sea floor. "The currently signed framework agreement is another milestone in our partnership with Statoil," said Dr. Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Diesel & Turbo Schweiz AG and Head of the Oil & Gas Business Unit. MAN Diesel Power for NCL Cruise Ships

On September 15, the Norwegian Gem will be transported from the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg. The latest luxury liner in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet will be powered by five 12V48/60B engines from MAN Diesel, the Augsburg-based large-bore diesel engine specialist. The engines' combined output is 97,800 hp. In 2004, MAN Diesel also supplied five engines for the liner's sister ship Norwegian Jewel. In a field trial in May 2007, one of the engines was converted to common rail technology during the crossing from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean. With the two new ship orders from Celebrity Cruises and DCL, common rail technology is already becoming the standard.

MAN D&T, AKA Partner to Win Russian Order

MAN Diesel Seattle Facility Opens

MAN Diesel celebrated the official opening of its newest service centre in Seattle, Washington on 27 October to further expand its PrimeServ network in North America. The Grand Opening of MAN Diesel PrimeServ Seattle took place in front of more than 100 customers, suppliers and business partners, including the local Honorary German and Danish Consuls. The newly renovated, 1,800-m2 workshop and 400-m2 office space will handle customer requests for all basic repair and service requirements, and include complete overhaul facilities for fuel equipment and turbochargers.
