Deltamarin Joins GTT for LNG-Powered Ship Designs

Finnish ship designer Deltamarin, part of AVIC Group, together with France's Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), an engineering company involved in membrane containment systems for transport and storage of LNG, has studied the use of membrane-type tanks on cargo and passenger vessels. For quite some time now, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has been an established fuel alternative for short sea shipping routes and also acts as a complementary fuel for longer routes. Deltamarin’s references include various vessels with LNG capabilities, and usually a C-type tank is the commonplace solution for fuel storage. However, when the desired range, autonomy or ship size increase, other tank technologies may become more viable for LNG fuel storage.

Agreement Between GTT and DSEC

GTT and Korean naval engineering company DSEC have signed a Technical Assistance and License Agreement for the construction of GTT membrane containment systems. This deal addresses the requirement of clients wishing to fit membrane type liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel tanks to all types of vessels (cruise vessels, container ships, bulk carriers or roll-on / roll-off ferries, etc.). Moreover, DSEC is already recognised for its ability to implement complete solutions including FGSS (Fuel Gas Supply System) and CHS (Cargo Handling System) systems. With this new cooperation, which broadens the spectrum of GTT industrial partners, shipyards no longer have to acquire the know-how required for the construction of GTT membranes and of LNG handling systems.

The Woodmac report we saw offered us cause for pause — “Strong activity from the (major oil companies)” while “national oil companies have tightened their purse strings.” What Maritime Reporter found, was that national oil companies — nation-builders, for many — are putting their money in affiliate shipyards. The hope of two, new shipbuilding giants is jobs, innovation, national survival and export security. The model is to invite those who have done it before: Koreans, Japanese, French and a contractor with offshore and marine experience.
