Rolls-Royce and Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey have signed a contract for the delivery of eight MTU Series 4000 engines for four new terminal tugs, including an option for a further four engines. Korean Coast Guard Chooses MTU Propulsion
MTU has been chosen by the Korean Coast Guard (KCG) to provide propulsion and onboard power for a new class of patrol vessels in its ever expanding and modernizing fleet. The new 5,000-ton displacement patrol vessel will be powered by four MTU 20V1163M94 engines in a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion configuration, with onboard power provided by four 12V4000M23S gensets. Korean CG Relies on MTU Propulsion
The Tognum business unit Engines received two orders for the supply of a total of 28 MTU engines from the Series 2000, Series 4000 and Series 1163 to the Korean Coast Guard in 2009. The orders also include MTU automation systems for six new vessels. The total order value is $55.6m. The engines and automation systems will be installed in new patrol boats with displacements of 300, 500, 1000 and 3000 tons. Contractual partners are the Korean companies STX Engine Co., Ltd, who manufactures the MTU engines under licence, and the MTU distributor, Meksan Engineering Co. Ltd who packages the automation systems with consoles. The new ships will be built by the Korean ship yards Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd (HHI) and Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd.
MTU Detroit Diesel Changes Name to Tognum America
MTU Detroit Diesel Inc. announced a name change to Tognum America Inc., effective June 1, 2011. Tognum America, like MTU Detroit Diesel before, is a subsidiary of the Germany-based Tognum Group and is responsible for the sales and service of MTU engines and MTU Onsite Energy distributed energy systems in North and Latin America. Tognum America has offices in Detroit, Houston, Washington DC, San Leandro, CA; St. Rose, LA; Miami, FL and Mankato, MN. The company also operates two state-of-the-art production facilities: one in Mankato, MN for diesel and gas-based generator sets and one in Aiken, SC where it currently machines parts and builds MTU Series 2000 and 4000 engines.
MTU Diesel Gensets Ordered for UK Combat Ships
Rolls-Royce is to supply 12 MTU diesel gensets to prime contractor BAE Systems for the first three Type 26 Global Combat Ships due to go into service with the U.K Royal Navy. The deal means that the core components of the frigate’s combined propulsion system will come from Rolls-Royce: four MTU diesel gensets with 20V 4000 M53B engines, each delivering 3,015 kW of mechanical power, and one Rolls-Royce MT30 gas turbine. The MTU brand is part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems. The Type 26 Global Combat Ship is the first newly-designed Royal Navy surface vessel to be equipped with MTU engines.
Tognum Starts on Building MTU Poland Facility
Ground-breaking ceremony for MTU-facility in Poland The Tognum Group has begun building its new production facility in Stargard Szczeciński in Poland, where in future Tognum’s subsidiary, MTU Polska, will manufacture components for MTU engines. The new plant is part of the Tognum Group’s global expansion strategy and is due to start production in the second half of 2013. When it becomes fully operational, it will have a workforce of over 200. The new plant is part of the Tognum Group’s global expansion strategy.
MTU “Ironmen” on Display in New Orleans
MTU’s booth at the 2011 International WorkBoat Show will highlight three of its longtime marine customers as they tell in their own words about their experiences with MTU engines. Through video and signage, attendees at the show will hear from tug operators who rely every day on their MTU engines for low fuel consumption, extended maintenance intervals and maximum availability. In addition, attendees will get to see those engines first-hand at the booth (#621). MTU will also highlight its marine control systems, genuine parts and service products. The MTU family of engines for commercial marine applications includes the Series 4000, the Series 2000 and the Series 60 engines.
First Damen Tug for Peru
Launching the business relationship between the two companies, Ian Taylor Peru has signed a contract with Damen Shipyards Group for an ASD Tug 2810. The vessel’s MTU engine and rapid delivery time were both key aspects of the contract. The two companies are also concluding negotiations for an additional order of a second identical vessel. Ian Taylor Peru, the Peruvian subsidiary of the Chilean group of companies Empresas Taylor, has been active in Peru’s towing sector since 1991. The company currently has four tugs in operation there.
MTU Engines for Korean Coastguard
The Korean government has placed an order with Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen for 44 large-scale engines to be delivered between July and September 2008 for 11 of its coastguard craft. The engines concerned are 22 Series 4000 units offering 2,750 kW (3,740 bhp) of power output and 22 Series 1163 engines with power ratings up to 7,400 kW (10,060 bhp). The contract is worth roughly €60 million. Due to the Korean Coastguard’s plans for further fleet modernization by 2010, more substantial orders may be placed with Tognum.

MTU Engines First Choice for Emirates Boatbuilder
MTU distributor Al Masaood and Arabian yacht builder Gulf Craft sign preferred partner agreement. Under the agreement, the Arabian shipyard Gulf Craft will soon offer MTU Series 2000 and 4000 engines in its Majesty Yachts as its primary engine option. The agreement was signed by Gulf Craft and Al Masaood, a Tognum Group distributor for MTU engines in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, at this year’s Dubai International Boat Show. The contract will extend through 2014 and provides more than 50 engines ranging from 8, 10, 12 and 16-cylinder units of Series 2000 to 12-cylinder engines of Series 4000. “This preferred partner agreement will allow us to strengthen our long-standing partnership and significantly expand our market share,” said Tognum Chief Sales Officer Dr. Michael Haidinger.
Rhode Island Fast Ferry's MTU Diesels Saving Fuel
'Ava Pearl,' a new catamaran operated by Rhode Island Fast Ferry, is fitted with fuel-efficient MTU Series 4000 engines. The 34-meter passenger vessel, designed by Incat Crowther and built by Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, makes three daily round-trips between North Kingstown, R.I., and Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., a one-way distance of 52 miles. In the first two months of operation, the 150-passenger Ava Pearl logged more than 18,700 sea-miles and the fuel savings have added up.
Red Funnel Catamaran Powered by MTU Engines
The latest addition to the British Red Funnel ferry fleet, Red Jet 6, completed first sea trials in June 2016 and will go into service in July. The high-speed catamaran ferry was built in Britain by Shemara Refit on the Isle of Wight with Rolls-Royce supplying four MTU Type 10V 2000 M72 engines and ZF Type 3050D gearboxes. Red Jet 6 is the most modern vessel in the Red Funnel fleet. Powered by four 900 kilowatt Series 2000 MTU engines, the catamaran is capable of service speeds up to 38 knots and has twice as many engines as it’s three sister ships which are also powered by MTU.
Tognum & Rolls Royce Cooperate on Two Power, Propulsion, Contracts
The first delivery comprises twelve MTU 16V 4000 M63 engines destined for Camorim, the Brazilian shipping company. Twin MTU engines will be used to power Rolls-Royce propeller-rudder systems on a total of six tug boats. Each engine in this order delivers power of 2,000kW, and its value lies at some three million euros to Tognum. The tug vessels will mainly be used in offshore oil production operations carried out by Petrobas, the petroleum producer in Rio de Janeiro/Macae. The second order is from Fjellstrand, the Norwegian shipyard.
Navy’s Surface Effect Ship Will Get MAN B&W Engines
Two MAN B&W Diesel Ltd., 18VP185 engines each rated at 4000 kWb at 1950 r/min have been specified by the U.S. Navy to re-engine the IX 515 Surface Effect Ship. The VP185 engines will replace two 16V396 MTU engines. The vessel utilizes a cushion of air trapped between the sidewalls and flexible bow and stern seals to lift a large part of the hull clear of the water to reduce drag. The IX 515 will continue to serve as a performance test platform for Navy weapon system test development programs.
Florida Detroit-Diesel Allison And Algae-X Sign Distributor Agreement
Algae-X has signed a distributor agreement with Florida Detroit Diesel-Allison (FDD-A)-based in Miami, Fla. FDD-A, which is the Detroit Diesel/MTU engine distributor operating eight branches throughout Florida, will be distributing the Algae-X Magnetic Fuel Conditioners and the AFC-705 Fuel Catalyst. In addition, Tyler Miller, FDDA's Parts Department Coordinator, plans to integrate Algae-X Fuel Conditioners into the fuel systems for engine packages, and to retrofit Algae-X units into existing engine installations for the marine and transportation industries.
Beckmeyer Visits Rolls-Royce's MTU Research
Uwe Beckmeyer, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy paid a visit to MTU Reman Technologies in Magdeburg to find out more about the company’s development operations in the maritime sector. MTU engines propel double-ended ferries in Turkey
Rolls-Royce Power Systems has just won an order for six MTU diesel engines which will be used to propel three double-ended ferries in Turkey. The ferries are being built by Turkey's Ceksan Shipyard and will be deployed by operator Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to power car and passenger ferries serving the Gulf of Izmir in western Turkey. The MTU 16V 4000 M54 engines each deliver 1685 kilowatts. For both shipyard and operator, this is a 'first' with MTU engines. On double-ended ferries, an engine is installed both at the bow and the stern.
Hatteland Display Chosen for UAE Corvettes
Hatteland Display will supply 19 inch Series 1 displays for the MTU engine consoles aboard six new high speed corvettes being built for the UAE. The Baynunah Class Multipurpose Missile Corvettes are sophisticated 236 ft vessels that have a cruising speed of 15 knts and can reach a maximum speed of over 30 knts, which is achieved through the use of four MTU 12V595 TE90 engines. The Series 1 family of displays range from 10 to 27 inches (widescreen) and are used in automation and navigation systems aboard naval and commercial vessels. GRSE to Build MTU Engines in India
agreement between Rolls Royce and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) will see final assembly of MTU Series 4000 engines in India. Under the terms of the deal, the 12V and 16V 4000 M90 type engines will be assembled in GRSE’s Diesel Engine Plant in Ranchi, while an option for the future local production of parts was also agreed upon. Navy Engine Contract Awarded
Valley Power Systems, Inc. (VPSI), City of Industry, Calif., is being awarded a $9,962,920 firm-fixed-price requirements contract for procurement of maintenance services (engine overhaul) and repair of the MK V Special Operations Craft MTU 12V396TE94 engines (MTU engines). Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by October 2012. Contract funds in the amount of $9,962,920 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The contract was not competitively procured. The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City, Fla., is the contracting activity (N61331-08-D-0003).
Dr. Ulrich Dohle New Head of Tognum
As announced in April, Dr Ulrich Dohle today takes up his new duties as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Tognum AG. He succeeds Joachim Coers, who has left the company after nine years at his own request. In his new role, Dr Dohle will not only take on the typical duties of a CEO, such as corporate communication and strategy, but will also be responsible for R&D and quality management. In April, the Supervisory Board extended Dr Dohle's contract until December 31, 2015. He has been on the Executive Board of Tognum AG since 2009, previously holding the position of deputy CEO and CTO. One priority of the Executive Board's work will be to expand operations worldwide. At the same time, cooperation with Rolls-Royce and Daimler is to be intensified.
