Dredging Companies Keeping a Close Eye on New Infrastructure Dollars

For dredging company executives, the recently passed $550 billion federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) sits like the proverbial Horn-o’-Plenty, ready to disgorge billions of federal dollars for maritime, port, harbor, coastal, inland waterways and flood projects, many of which will require dredging. This is a really big deal because this new money will go toward existing projects, work that’s been on the books, so to speak, but, until now, couldn’t be funded.

The UK Chamber of Shipping has launched ‘Understanding UK Shipping’, a new book that gives a comprehensive overview of the nation’s maritime industry to newcomers and anyone looking to increase their understanding of the sector. The book covers a range of topics from national and international legislation; crew employment rights, safety standards, and the carriage of goods and passengers by sea. The publication was written by the UK Chamber’s policy team, who between them have over 100 years of experience in developing shipping's regulatory framework and advising industry on legislation and compliance. It’s still too early to know for certain what the new administration will do about building up the U.S. Navy, as the numbers are a moving target. But with President Trump’s recent pledge to add $54 billion to defense spending, it’s a safe bet to make that the fleet will grow. So let’s start with the numbers. There are different ways to count the fleet size, including whether or not you count auxiliaries, but let’s use this number as the baseline: There are 274 ships in the U.S. Navy now.

Det Norske Veritas (DNV) began in 1864 as a small Norwegian classification society, and in the 150 years since, has grown into one of the world’s largest enterprises of its kind with the formation of DNV GL in 2013. As part of the group’s anniversary celebration, DNV GL launched a book entitled “Building Trust: the History of DNV 1864-2014,” telling the tale of the organization’s development throughout its 150-year history, drawing attention to the group’s sociological contributions through the years.
