DNV GL Approves Kongsberg Engine Room Simulators

Kongsberg Digital has received DNV-GL statements of compliance for two of its newest Engine Room Simulator models designed to provide in-depth training on the K-Sim Engine simulator platform. The DNV GL-ST-033 March 2017 Maritime Simulator Systems certification, which is based on the requirements of STCW Convention, Regulation I/12, was awarded to the DEDF Cruise Ferry and L11 MAN 6S70 ME SCC K-Sim Engine models in December 2017. USCG Seeks Comment on Rules For Uninspected Passenger Vessels

The USCG seeks comment from the public on proposed regulations to implement the Passenger Vessel Safety Act of 1993 (PVSA). The PVSA, among other provisions, established a new class of uninspected passenger vessels that are at least 100 gross tons and carry no more than 12 passengers for hire. In an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM), the USCG asked for comments on what type of operational and equipment requirements should be proposed for these uninspected vessels. The notice seeks information on the type of safety equipment this new class of uninspected passenger vessel carries, the construction standards it currently meets, and licensing and experience requirements for vessel owners, operators and charter brokers, among other issues.

Quantum Wins Cutter Contract

Quantum Marine Engineering won a contract to engineer, design, supply and support the roll stabilization systems for the U.S. Coast Guard's new class of Fast Response Cutters designated as the WPC project. Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. is the prime contractor for this new class of cutters. The contract calls for up to 34 of these new ships to be built and delivered to the USCG over a multi-year contract. Navios to Sell Two VLCCs

Navios Maritime Acquisition Corporation, an owner and operator of tanker vessels, has announced  that it has agreed to sell the C. Dream, a 2000-built VLCC of 298,570 dwt, and the Nave Celeste, a 2003-built VLCC of 298,717 dwt, to Navios Maritime Midstream Partners L.P. for a total consideration of $100 million, payable in the form of $73 million in cash and $27 million in a new class of subordinated units. Τhe new class of subordinated units, with respect to liquidation, will be senior to the existing subordinated units and junior to the common units. The new class of subordinated units will be subordinated for three years from the date of issuance and automatically convert to common units at such time.

Foss Maritime Company to Build New Class of Tugs

Foss Maritime Company of Seattle, Wa., has announced plans to build a new class of the highest horsepower tugs on the West Coast devoted exclusively to ship docking. The new series of 6,250 horsepower Azmuthing Stern Drive (ASD) thruster tugs will be constructed for the use in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif., by Halter Marine Inc., in Lockport, Lou. This tug is scheduled for arrival early in the fourth quarter of 2001. The 6,250 hp Detroit Diesel engines are fitted in a hull that will have an overall length of 98 ft. and a beam of 40 ft. The propulsion driveline consists of the new fuel efficient, electronically controlled Detroit 16V4000 main engines, which exceed California's air quality standards for low emissions.

The Lewis and Clark-class of dry cargo/ammunition ships — the Navy's newest class of logistics ships, also called T-AKEs — continued to grow with the launch of the 10th ship in the class and the delivery of the ninth to the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command. USNS Charles Drew was christened and launched during an early morning ceremony Feb. 27, at the General Dynamics NASSCO shipyard in San Diego. Ship's sponsor Bebe Drew Price, daughter of the ship's namesake, broke the traditional bottle of champagne across the bow.

Horizon Lines Elects New Directors

Horizon Lines, Inc. (NYSE: HRZ) announced that shareholders at the company's annual meeting yesterday elected three Class II directors and ratified the appointment of Horizon Lines' public accounting firm Ernst & Young LLP. Additionally, the Board of Directors re-elected Chief Executive Officer Charles G. Raymond as its Chairman. During the annual meeting, shareholders re-elected Class II directors Vern Clark and William J. Flynn, and elected Stephen H. Fraser as a new Class II director to succeed Dan A. Colussy, who retired from the board.  

Military Budget Shows Shift in U.S. Strategy

According to an April 6 report from the New York Times, Secretary Gates announced proposed changes in the U.S. military budget including cuts in Navy shipbuilding operations. Gates said he planned to halt a Navy program to build a new class of stealth destroyers. The changes also include halting reductions in Navy personnel. (Source: The New York Times)

DNV GL: New Class Notation for Gas Bunkering

DNV GL has developed a new class notation for gas bunker vessels that targets safer fuel transfer operations from one ship to another. Until now, the development of standards guiding gas fuel transfer operations in ports has lagged behind, as the maritime industry focussed on developing standards for gas fuelled ships rather than bunkering arrangements. This notation addresses safety concerns in this field and covers gas bunker vessels design and additional requirements to support the development of gas fuelled shipping and bunker operations in ports. The rules are flexible and include a variety of gas fuels as well as the configuration of bunker transfer systems.

Gladding-Hearn Delivers New Pilot Boat

Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation, has delivered a new “Chesapeake” class pilot boat to the Delaware pilots. The shipyard’s new class of pilot boats has also been built for the Virginia, Maryland, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, and Portland, Maine pilots. According to Winn Willard at C. Raymond Hunt Associates, the designer, the increasing popularity of the Chesapeake class results from some subtle changes to the firm’s typical pilot boat design. VT Secures Major Share

Vosper Thornycroft (VT) is scheduled to play a significant role in the design and construction of the initial batch of Type 45 destroyers for the Royal Navy. VT will share in the design and production of the first three ships as well as the assembly of the second ship, which will be named HMS Dauntless. The company is currently working with the prime contractor BAE Systems on the design of the new class. Production work will commence in early 2002, with the second ship, to be assembled by VT, delivered to the Royal Navy in 2009.

Navy Finds New Ship Unsat

According to a report from Reuters, U.S. Navy Secretary Donald Winter said he remained unhappy about the performance of the USS San Antonio, the first in a new class of LPD 17 amphibious ships being built by Northrop Grumman Corp. Winters gave a speech on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, a nonpartisan think tank. HII Yard Christening of LHA 6 'America'

Lynne Pace, wife of retired U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, served as the ship's sponsor. The multi-purpose amphibious assault ship America (LHA 6) built by Huntington Ingalls Industries' Ingalls Shipbuilding division. is the first in a new class, and the fourth U.S. Navy vessel to be named America, extending a legacy dating back to 1861. Ingalls has built 13 amphibious assault ships: five in the Tarawa (LHA 1) class and eight in the Wasp (LHD 1) class.

Litton Awarded $477.7M Contract

Litton Avondale Industries, a division of Litton Industries, has been awarded a $477.7 million contract by the U.S. Navy for the construction of an additional ship in the Navy's newest class of amphibious assault ships. The cost reimbursable contract is for the construction of LPD 20, the fourth ship in a planned 12-ship program. The follow-on eight ships in the LPD 17 San Antonio Class program will be awarded over the next four years. As prime contractor for the LPD 17 program, Litton Avondale leads a team comprised of Bath Iron Works, Raytheon Electronic Systems and Intergraph Corporation. Design of the lead ship of the class is underway at Litton Avondale with actual production scheduled to begin this summer.

Aircraft Carrier Funding Approved

Huntington Ingalls Industries (NYSE:HII) said that its Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division has received a $43.4 million modification to a previously awarded contract from the U.S. Navy for purchase of materials for the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the second ship in the Navy's newest class of carriers. The funds awarded to NNS will be used to purchase major, long-lead-time equipment, such as the ship's elevator machinery and large pumps.

Carrier Steam Turbine Contract Awarded

DRS Technologies, Inc. has been awarded a contract to continue to design advanced propulsion steam turbines for the U.S. Navy's next-generation CVN-78 class of aircraft carriers. The $5.6 million award was received by DRS from Dresser-Rand Company in Wellsville, New York, a unit of Ingersoll-Rand Company Limited (NYSE:IR). The design effort for this contract will be performed by the company's DRS Power Technology unit in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The main propulsion turbines to be manufactured by Dresser-Rand will be delivered to Northrop Grumman Newport News, in Newport, Virginia, by 2008. "DRS is a key supplier of power systems to the U.S.

Southwest Shipyard of Houston, partner of Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG), has been selected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to build the third vessel in a new class of 28-car ferries for the city of Port Aransas. Korean Coast Guard Chooses MTU Propulsion

MTU has been chosen by the Korean Coast Guard (KCG) to provide propulsion and onboard power for a new class of patrol vessels in its ever expanding and modernizing fleet. The new 5,000-ton displacement patrol vessel will be powered by four MTU 20V1163M94 engines in a Combined Diesel and Diesel (CODAD) propulsion configuration, with onboard power provided by four 12V4000M23S gensets.
