Singapore-based container shipper X-Press Feeders plans to use green methanol bunker to fuel part of its fleet in Europe in the second quarter of 2024, a senior executive said on Tuesday.The move comes as the European Union will extend its Emissions Trading System (ETS) next year to cover carbon dioxide emissions for all ships of 5,000 gross tonnage and above entering EU ports.Shippers can buy carbon credits to offset emissions or burn lower-carbon fuels such as methanol and biofuels, although supply of these fuels is limited.

Container shippers are ordering vessels powered by methanol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but it will take years for renewable methanol output to meet demand and for costs to fall, industry executives said.The first green methanol-fuelled container ship, owned by A.P. Eastern Pacific Shipping to Operate Methanol- and Ammonia-powered Vessels
Singapore-headquartered shipping company Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) said on Friday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with OCI N.V. (OCI) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN) to develop methanol and ammonia as marine fuels to aide in industry-wide decarbonization and environmental preservation efforts.The partnership involves using select conventional vessels from EPS’ existing tanker fleet that use MAN engines to be retrofitted, allowing them to be powered by methanol and ammonia which will be supplied by OCI. Also, EPS will construct newbuild vessels with MAN engines powered by the same two alternative marine fuels. OCI intends to charter the first retrofitted vessel from EPS.The announcement is in line with EPS’ agnostic approach to its alternative marine fuel program.

Supplier of specialist offshore cargo carrying units, Swire Oilfield Services, has announced the acquisition of the assets and operating business of Australia based Weir OCI, creating the largest regional supplier of offshore cargo carrying units (CCU) in the Australian and Asian region. Weir OCI is the company’s second Australian acquisition in the past year, and takes investment in the region to more than $25m. In August 2008 Swire Oilfield Services acquired Perth based Maritime Products & Services. The three companies together will now trade as Swire Oilfield Services Pty Ltd.

The three acre site is scheduled for completion on the 1st of December and once fully operational, personnel including shot blasters and painters will be hired to service the new hub.
