Sale of Two Inland River Pushboats
Marcon International Inc. of Coupeville, Wash. announced the sale of two sister inland river pushboats Captain Jimmy and Captain from Hanover Towing Inc. of Wilmington, NC to McBride River Services LLC of Kentucky on private terms. The 900 bhp pushboats were originally built by Jeffboat Inc at Jeffersonville, Ind., in 1965,and were commissioned by Gulf Atlantic Towing Corporation. The pair were sold to Allied Towing in 1972 and Hanover purchased them in 1975. The 58.3 ft. registered length vessels are powered by twin Cummins KT1150M diesels driving two 60 x 50-in. 4-blade stainless steel blades. Immediately after closing the sale, both pushboats were mobilized from North Carolina to the Mid West region to commence a charter. Marcon acted as sole broker in the transaction.
New Bridge Unveiled for US Pushboats
JRC and Alphatron Marine will introduce a new pushboat bridge concept dedicated for the American river and inland waterways. Harnessing 25 years of European inland waterways experience, the companies say a balance is struck between the latest technological advancements and the unique operating requirements for some of the world’s largest rivers. In Europe, typically inland shipping can move a maximum six barges at a time while the size of the rivers in the United States allows for transport of up to 36 barges at the same time.
New Business for Marine Inland Fabricators
Marine Inland Fabricators, Panama City, Fla., has a full yard of new business. The company recently built the fourth Clydesdale pushboat for Smith Brothers, Inc., two of which were sold before they were even completed. Additionally, seven sectional barges were shipped to Vallejo, Calif., for set construction of a Batman and Robin water show. Four more sectionals are being built for a 100 x 24 ft. floating dock at the American Yacht Club, in Rye, N.Y. Palm Island Transit recently took delivery of its second ferry barge built by Marine Inland Fabricators. The ferry barge measured 77 x 24 ft., and the bow ramp is moved by hydraulic cylinders with power from the barge's pushboat. Currently under construction is a 55 x 24 ft.
LaForce to Construct Pushboat
Industry veteran towboater Autry Dufrene of Belle Chasse, La. has contracted the Bayou La Batre, Ala. LaForce Shipyard. Measuring 74 x 28 ft., the 1,600 hp pushboat houses "a semi-camber" design from keel to the chine on the underside of the aft hull. Scheduled for delivery sometime during February, the vessel's power will be provided by a pair of Cummins 12-cylinder KTA38 MO engines developing 800 hp each. The engines will be linked to Twin Disc MG-5301 gears with a 6.39:1 ratio turning 74 x 60 in. propellers.
Wärtsilä enters Paraguayan Inland Market
A new pushboat used to push barges convoys along the Paraguay River will be powered by a Wärtsilä integrated propulsion solution. The vessel is being built at the "Astillero la Barca del Pescador" (Shipyard SA) yard in Paraguay on behalf of Naviera Yeruti, a Paraguayan company with extensive barge construction and vessel operating interests. This vessel will be the company's first pushboat and it is scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2015. The contract with Shipyard SA was signed in December 2013 and Wärtsilä's equipment will be delivered in the third quarter of 2014.
One More in Series for Waxler
Waxler Transportation Co. has taken delivery of the final towboat in a series of five 99 by 35-ft, 3200 hp pushboats. The latest sister, the M/V Helen Merrill, made her maiden voyage for Secors inland transport subsidiary in mid-January 2010. Each of the vessels has a pair of Cummins KTA50 M2 diesels individually rated for 1600 HP linked to Haley HRV Series gears providing main engine power. Electrical requirements are met by a pair of 99 kW Cummins Onan generator sets.
TOWBOAT TECH: Tougher, Kinder and more Hospitable
The design challenge for towboats in the new Millennium is they are being called upon to do tougher jobs on the water but at the same time have be more environmentally friendly to the water on which they sail. Also, many of today's towboats are light years ahead of their predecessors of just a few years ago in crew amenities and berthing spaces. "Much of the new technology we are seeing on towboats is because of new IMO, EPA, OSHA and ABS regulations," said Terry Boffone, president of Progressive Barge Line, Westwego, La. Progressive's business is mid-streaming fueling, so careful delivery of the products they carry such as diesel fuel and gasoline from the tank barge to the ship is critical.
HB Centaurus delivered to Hidrovias do Brasil
HB Centaurus is the latest addition to the RApide 4600-Z3 Class of shallow draft pushboat designs by Robert Allan Ltd., delivered to its owner: Hidrovias do Brasil in February, 2015. Constructed at Uzmar Shipyard, in Turkey, the HB Centaurus will operate in the Rio Paraguay and Rio Paraná river systems of South America. HB Centaurus in the eighth and final RApide 4600-Z3 Class vessel for this Owner, and in late March joined its sistership HB Scorpius on one of Rolldock’s heavy lift ships for delivery from Turkey to South America.
Foran Employed in Production Design of Pushboat
FORAN has been used by the naval architecture firm ROBERT ALLAN LTD. in the review of the production design of 6000 HP Shallow Draft Pushboat, to be built in Erin Shipyard in Manaus, Brazil. ROBERT ALLAN Ltd., a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Company based in Vancouver, Canada signed a contract with SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas S.A. (SENER) for the use of FORAN FVIEWER during this project. The 6000 HP Shallow Draft Pushboat was designed by ROBERT ALLAN LTD. for Hidrovias do Brasil. Pushing on Brazil’s Rio Madeira
Flavio Silveira does design work for the Beconal shipyard where he continues to upgrade the Amason’s basic pushboat design. This September the yard delivered a 1200 hp pushboat to Planalto. As do most Amazon pusboats, the hull of the M/V SCL 22 has a slight dead-rise at the bow with a two deck winches for making up to the tow mounted on the foredeck. Push knees are designed to accommodate barges at various drafts. A walkway from the top of the main deck house to the top of the push knees will provide safe access to the deck of high barges.
Hope Services’ 72-ft. Pushboats are a Higman Standard
Hope Services of Dulac, La., have built two more of their popular 72 x 30-ft. pushboats. These two, the eighteenth and nineteenth to the design, are for Higman Towing of Houston, Texas. The first was delivered last May and the second is currently undergoing sea trials for an early August delivery. Each boat is powered by a pair of 12-cylinder Cummins KTA38 M0 engines rated for 850 hp at 1,800 rpm. The engines turn into Twin Disc 540 gears with 6.14:1 reduction. The 73 x 58-in. four-blade stainless propellers are mounted on six-in. stainless shafts. Electrical needs are met by a pair of Cummins 6B series powered 50 kW gen sets. Accommodation on the 1,700 hp tugs is provided for six people in three staterooms with additional space utilized for a washer and dryer.
Pushboat for Longtime Louisiana Operator
In business since the 1960s, veteran towboater Autry Dufrene of Belle Chasse, La. is having a new boat built at LaForce Shipyard in Bayou LaBatre, Ala. The 1,600 hp, 74 x 28 ft. pushboat incorporates "a semi-camber" design from the keel to the chine on the underside of the aft hull. "It keeps the plate rounded to give extra strength and stop the vibration," explained Dufrene who operates his fleet under the name American Tugs, Inc. Power for the new boat will be provided by a pair of Cummins 12-cylinder KTA38 MO engines developing 800 hp each. This is Dufrene's second boat with the KTA38. He repowered a boat with a pair of the engines over a year ago and has been happy with their performance.
Moran To Launch Pushboat
Around the end of June Moran Towing Corp. of New Canaan, Connecticut will launch the Lisa Moran, a new triple screw push boat at the C&G Boatworks yard in Mobile Alabama. This will be the third push boat in the extensive and varied Moran fleet. The firm’s two existing pushboats were repowered with Cummins engines earlier this year. Three Cummins KTA38 M0 mains, each one producing 850 hp at 1800 rpm, will power the 77 x 30-ft. Lisa Moran. Each engine will turn into ZF model W3310 marine gears with 5:1 reduction and five-inch diameter Aquamet 17 shafts. The hull has a molded depth of ten feet six inches. Accommodations are designed for a crew of eight. Tankage includes 30,000 gallons of fuel, 5,000 gallons of water and 165 gallons of lube oil.
Iconic Engines: Cummins K38-M
Most Americans will recall an iconic automobile engine from their youth. It might be an early 1950s Ford V-8 flat head or a 1970s Dodge 426 Hemi. Over the decades other engines have been added to the list. In a similar fashion mariners have identified classic marine diesels. One such is the Cummins 38-liter 2300-cu. inch engine known over the years as the KTA38. Canadian fisherman John Lenic has been running one in his 1978-built steel purse seiner Ocean Marauder. Still running on the original engine he swears by it.
Hope Shipyard Delivers M/V Redfish
Higman Marine Services of Houston, Texas, took delivery of its newest vessel, the M/V Red Fish. The vessel was built in five months by Hope Shipyard, located in Dulac, La. The pushboat is slightly larger than previous vessels built for Higman, measuring 78 ft by 32 ft with a 10 ft depth. The M/V Red Fish headed out from Hope’s fabrication yard on the Houma Navigational Waterway after a quick delivery to meet up with her first tow. Damen Deliver Twin-Axe OSV to Marineco
The ‘Marineco Thunderbird’ is UK-based Marineco’s fourth FCS 2610 Twin Axe to join its windfarm support fleet of vessels. Marineco was the first customer to buy one of these vessels nearly two and a half years ago, based on a design for an Offshore and Offshore Wind support vessel which Damen really believed in. The recent purchase of Thunderbird, Damen say, is proof of the concept and its future. Siemens will be deploying Thunderbird off the west coast of England, where it will be used to perform installation and maintenance work for Walney Offshore Windfarms.
Robert Allan Inks Contract with Uzmar Shipyard
Robert Allan Ltd. has announced the signing of a contract during the recent International Workboat Show in New Orleans, USA. Robert Allan Ltd. and Uzmar Shipyard signed documents commencing a new high performance escort tug project. Uzmar has now built over 90 Robert Allan designed tugs and workboats since the first project in 1996, ranging in size from 15m aluminium catamarans, to 36m escort tugs, to 46m shallow draft pushboats. This contract covers a new RAstar 3000-W design setup to accommodate propulsion packages of up to 90 tonnes of bollard pull while still staying under 500 GT.
Europe Cargo Handles 9 Tugs
Europe Cargo, the Belgian member of the FPS Group of independent forwarders and NVOCCs, has undertaken the port agency and stevedoring for nine Damen Stan tug boats, being shipped from Shanghai to Gorinchem, Netherlands. The brand new vessels – five Type 1606, each weighing 86 metric tons, and four Type 1205, each weighing 55 metric tons - were loaded on deck and in the hold of MS Clipper Marlene (a multi-purpose vessel owned by Clipper of Denmark) secured to custom-built transport cradles. On arrival in Rotterdam, the tugs were released from their cradles and offloaded onto the quay using the ship’s own three 60 metric ton capacity deck cranes…
Ultrapetrol Regains Nasdaq Compliance
Transportation company Ultrapetrol (Bahamas) Ltd. regains compliance with the Nasdaq $1.00 per share minimum bid price requirement. Ultrapetrol is an industrial transportation company serving the marine transportation needs of its clients in the markets on which it focuses. It serves the shipping markets for containers, grain and soya bean products, forest products, minerals, crude oil, petroleum, and refined petroleum products, as well as the offshore oil platform supply market with its extensive and diverse fleet of vessels. These include river barges and pushboats, platform supply vessels, tankers and two container feeder vessels.
Ultrapetrol Files for $175m IPO
According to the AP, shipping company Ultrapetrol (Bahamas) Ltd. plans to offer 12.5m shares at $13 to $15 each in a bid to raise about $175 million in its initial public offering. The company is the largest owner and operator of river barges and pushboats that transport dry bulk and liquid cargos through the Hidrovia region of South America, a network of waterways that connect Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. The Bahamas-based company runs an offshore supply business, operates six oceangoing vessels and runs two cruise ships with a total capacity of 1,600 passengers. The company filed its IPO on March 30 but details of the offering were not available.
Pushboats for the Amazon
Transdorada Transportes LTDA, a towboat operator on Brazil’s Amazon River, has recently taken delivery of a number of Cummins-powered push boats. These include two 64-ft boats with twin Cummins KTA19-M3 engines each delivering 600 HP and a single 64-ft pushboat with a single KTA19-M3 engine. All three vessels were built at Estaleiro Rio Maguari. The boats will operate on the Amazon River between Belem and Manaus with the 1200 hp twin engined boats pushing six to nine barges and the 600 hp single-screw vessel pushing four barges at a time.
