Thordon Wins Shaft Seals Order

DNV Issues Guidance on Passenger Vessel Blackouts

A newly published guidance paper from DNV seeks to support the prevention and mitigation of blackouts impacting passenger vessels.With blackout incidents on cruise ships on the rise, DNV has created a new guidance titled ‘Managing the risk of blackouts’ which addresses the main causes and associated risks, while offering recommendations and best practices on how to avoid them and reduce the likelihood of their occurrence.In 2019 there were 12 reported power-loss events on cruise ships that resulted in full or partial blackout while in transit or maneuvering – up from four events in 2018.

New Icebreaking Cruise Ship Design Unveiled

Naval architecture and marine engineering firm Knud E. Hansen has introduced a new 144-meter-long icebreaking expedition cruise vessel design with accommodations for up to 300 passengers in 150 cabins.Designed to achieve a service speed of 17 knots in open water, and with the ability to operate in solid multi-year ice of 1.8m thickness, the vessel has diesel electric propulsion, and two azipod-units, each 7.5 MW. The six generators have a combined power of approximately 23 MW and are fueled by a combination of marine diesel oil (MDO), and natural gas (LNG).

NCL Chooses Brookes Bell’s Safe Return to Port Solution

Brookes Bell said it has been contracted by Norwegian Cruise Line to deliver its software solution SRtP Onboard across its Breakaway Plus class of vessels. Brookes Bell was engaged directly by the Meyer Werft shipyard for these tasks whose close collaboration greatly enhanced the final output to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.The software was installed on the newly launched Norwegian Cruise Line ship, Norwegian Encore in December 2019 including the delivery of training to all crew involved.

CSL Launches Passenger/Cargo Ship for Andaman

Knud E. Hansen Intros New RoPax Design

Danish naval architectural consultancy Knud E. Hansen has released its newest design, a 154-meter RoPax ferry that can transport up to 1,500 passengers and 440 cars.The vessel also offers an additional 657 lane meters for trucks and trailers, said the marine engineering company.The vessel has a service speed of 25 knots and can operate close to optimum engine load even at slow speeds due to its diesel electric propulsion plant and azimuthing pods. The four engines have a combined power of approximately 48 Megawatts and are fueled by marine diesel oil (MDO). There are also two tunnel thrusters located at the bow which, combined with the azipods, allow the vessel to move laterally without any forward or aft motion, a very desirable feature for mooring.

ABB Power and Automation for New Indian Ferries

ABB said it has signed a contract with India’s largest shipbuilding and maintenance facility, Cochin Shipyard Ltd, to deliver a first-ever integrated power and automation package to an Indian shipowner.ABB’s contract with Cochin Shipyard covers two new 1,200-passenger ferries, to be delivered to the Andaman & Nicobar Administration in 2020. In what’s said to be a first for a shipowner in India, these vessels will benefit from a full integration of their power generation, distribution and propulsion systems…

Deltamarin Bags Ro-pax Design Contract

Deltamarin Ltd has signed a contract with Chinese Guangzhou Shipyard International Co, Ltd (GSI) for consultancy and engineering services for the DFDS ro-pax ferries. Deltamarin earlier carried out contract design of the ship concept for GSI in cooperation with the owner. Deltamarin will provide the yard with basic (approval) and detail design together with Safe Return to Port (SRtP) documentation. The contract covers all disciplines and all areas. The value of Deltamarin’s contract with GSI is about €5 million ($6.2 million). The work will be carried out at Deltamarin’s offices in Finland and China with the assistance of network companies from Europe over an estimated period of 13 months.

Advanced IBS for Polar Research Vessel

Raytheon Anschütz has recently completed the supply of their latest generation of Integrated Bridge System (IBS) to the “SA Agulhas II”, a new polar research ship owned by the Republic of South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA). Sea trials including demanding ice trial tests in the Gulf of Bothnia were successfully passed during March 2012. P&O’s Newest Ferry the Spirit of Britain

P&O’s new ferry, the 49,000 GRT Spirit of Britain just recently floated out onto the water at STX Europe shipyard in Rauma, Finland. She will after delivery serve the Dover-Calais route from January 2011. Construction is also started on her sister; the Spirit of France, due to operate from September 2011. When the vessel is completed, the Spirit of Britain will be the biggest ferry operating on the English Channel, at a capacity of 3746 lane meters (lm) for trailers, cars and other cargo and space for approximately 180 freight trucks, 195 passenger cars and 1.750 passengers.
