Over 60 emission-reduction technologies from 130 companies reveals that shipping industry is embracing clean technology, amid increasing commercial and regulatory pressure to reduce fuel bills and emissions

LONDON: April 7th: Over 130 companies are currently providing over sixty emission-reduction “clean” technologies to the international shipping industry, according to ‘The Guide’: the first comprehensive guide to ship efficiency and technology measures, launched today.

‘The Guide’, launched today by Fathom, a leading provider of market intelligence products and services for the marine and energy industries, and supported by BIMCO, the world’s largest private shipping organisation, and Lloyd’s Register, details the emission reduction capability, payback periods and ship type applicability of an array of technologies.

Editor of ‘The Guide’, Peter Lockley commented: “Despite continued negotiations at IMO and UNFCCC around a mandatory Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and market based instruments to reduce Greenhouse Gases (GHG), what we are seeing is that rising fuel costs and better practices in preparation for impending GHG reduction measures have spurred on an impressive number of companies to offer an ever-wider array of emission reduction solutions.

While many of the technologies may be well-known, previously there were market barriers to industry take-up, such as technological problems or low fuel prices. Increasingly these barriers are eroding; not least as the innovative shipowners and operators in the market look to prepare for impending regulations.”

Amid rising crude and bunker prices, The Guide has been developed to meet the increasing thirst for knowledge of fuel saving efficiency technologies and measures, as shipping faces increasing commercial and regulatory pressure to reduce fuel costs and emissions.

A spokesperson for BIMCO commented: “BIMCO welcomes The Fathom Guide to Ship Efficiency Technologies and Measures as a new tool for ship owners, operators and designers who are searching for information on reduction of air emissions from ships. Fuel costs represent in general the largest operating cost for ships. The shipping industry and its suppliers are increasingly innovative in discovering means to reduce fuels costs and emissions and ‘The Guide’ provides a comprehensive listing of the options available for the shipowners and ship builders.”
