Safebridge Adds Type-Specific ECDIS Training Packages

Safebridge, the Hamburg-based pioneer in interactive, Internet-based, navigation training, has released its eighth online type-specific training course for the Imtech SeaGuide ECDIS.

“We are drawing closer to our goal of providing a comprehensive range of flexible, cost-effective, online courses for all major ECDIS suppliers in anticipation of increasing demand for type-specific training,” said Safebridge managing director, Ulf Steden. “This was the last of the releases completed in the first half of 2013. The second half will include the release of one further new course and then be followed by a series of updates to those existing courses, where the manufacturers have released new software versions.”

Commenting on the impact of the ECDIS carriage and training legislation, Steden said, “The phased schedule for mandatory carriage is still only in its first year but we are already seeing growing demand for our online courses as customer awareness and understanding of the requirements of STCW 2010 increase. The next carriage milestone has just come into effect in July 2013 and applies to new-build cargo vessels of 10,000 GT and over. Whilst this will not have a major impact the on the training market immediately, the growth in the installed base of ECDIS equipment together with safety considerations and the full operational implementation of existing ECDIS installations is driving demand forward."

The Imtech SeaGuide ECDIS works as a generic system but also includes the additional features of radar overlay, ARPA targets, AIS and Navtex interface and integrated conning. Featuring a fan-less embedded computer with a solid-state hard disk and an integrated maintenance system for increased up-time, the SeaGuide is a latest-generation ECDIS fulfilling the most recent performance standards.  An intelligent data concentrator, LAN-based architecture, a wide range of monitors up to 26” widescreen and intelligent power management complete the system.

“The Safebridge training course is fully approved by Imtech Marine Germany and in compliance with all relevant regulations. As a result the training on our equipment is now available worldwide via the web at a price that does not have a major impact on the cost of implementation,” said Jürgen Ostrowitzki, Head of Product Management at Imtech Marine Germany.

Safebridge courses require a completed IMO 1.27 generic training as a prerequisite and represent 16-18 hours of study in a three-week window, allowing the student enough time to use the ”FreePlay” feature to access the ECDIS software in simulation mode over the internet and practice real-life scenarios, prior to taking the online test
