Bow Thruster Repaired Fast by Great Lakes Shipyard
Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, performs emergency repairs on USCG Aids to Navigation barge. United States Coast Guard Cutter Mobile Bay of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin departs Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio after completion of drydocking and repairs to the bow thruster on it 120-foot Aids to Navigation Barge. The barge was hauled out on Monday, September 17th using the Shipyard’s 770-ton Marine Travelift.
Nichols Brothers to Build Second WSF 144-Car Ferry
US Fab Contracts Nichols Brothers Boat Builders to build the second 144-Car Washington State Ferry Superstructure. At their Seattle facility, US Fab, a subsidiary company of Vigor Industrial will partner once again with Nichols Brothers Boat Builders of Freeland, Washington to build the second 144-Car Washington State Ferry. The Vessel is the second to be built in the Olympic Class for Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries division.
Wave Added Resistance
Model tests for the evaluation of ship designs should not only be performed in calm water but also in waves. MARIN’s new Depressurized Wave Basin (DWB) helps unravel some of the mysteries of wave added resistance. A ship is usually designed with a focus on its performance in calm water. However, operational conditions should be taken into account, including added resistance due to waves because it is an important factor in the economical performance of a ship.
Vibration Mitigation on Fast Craft
The professional maritime sector recognizes the need to reduce the effects of Whole Body Vibration (WBV) but this is not a straightforward process for those operating planing craft. These vessels can expose crews and passengers to high levels of repeated shock and vibration which has been shown to increase the risk of injury. In flat sea conditions there is vibration from the engine, gearbox and shaft but the crew and passengers are not exposed to harmful vibration.

In all 232, or about one-third of the tugs available worldwide – primarily foreign flagged – were built within the last 10 years, or are newbuilding re-sales or currently under construction.
