Ingalls Awards STEM Grants to Gulf Coast Schools
Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Ingalls Shipbuilding division has awarded more than $102,000 in grants for 28 projects at schools and educational organizations in Mississippi and Alabama. The grants, which were requested by the organizations, will be used for projects associated with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This is the seventh year for Ingalls' STEM program. The company has awarded more than $609,000 for STEM-related projects during that period.
North Star Shipping Chooses ZF Thrusters
Three years ago, North Star Shipping installed ZF thrusters in the Grampion Don, the first in a series of new Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels (ERRVs). After three years in service, the craft’s ZF 4011 RT thruster passed without any problems at its first drydock inspection. North Star Shipping, part of the Craig Group, provides 24/7 support to more than 30 offshore installations in one of the world’s most hostile marine environments.
LA Container Volumes Up 6% in 2014
Container volumes at the Port of Los Angeles increased 6 percent in 2014 over the previous year, with total volumes reaching 8,340,065 Twenty-Foot-Equivalent Units (TEU). It was the third busiest year in the port’s history, just behind 8.4 million TEUs in 2007 and 8.5 million TEUs in 2006. “The 2014 numbers are an encouraging indication that the national economy continues to improve,” said Port Executive Director Gene Seroka.

FMC: US Port Congestion a Top Priority
Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) Chairman Mario Cordero announced to staff January 13 that his priority for the Commission in 2015 is addressing congestion issues that are plaguing U.S. ports. Starting in September 2014, FMC Commissioners led public forums concerning port congestion and international supply chain efficiency issues. Cordero noted that this focus is in keeping with the Commission’s 2014-2018 Strategic Plan.
