Asia-Europe Box Rates Fall 5.6 pct
Freight rates for container shipping from Asia to Northern Europe fell by 5.6 percent in the Monday through Wednesday period compared with last week, to $1,085 per 20-foot container (TEU), data showed on Friday. Rates on the route, which is the world's busiest for container shipping, were thereby 28 percent lower than at the same time in 2013. From Asia to ports in the Mediterranean, container freight rates fell 4.8 percent from last week, the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index showed.

HMAS Launceston Assists Ill Mariner
HMAS Launceston assisted in the medical evacuation of a critically ill Chinese mariner from a Chinese fishing vessel, 80 nautical miles south-east of Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean on the afternoon of 1 January, 2015. The request for Launceston’s assistance came from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, and the patrol boat embarked a civilian medical officer prior to departing. The Chinese mariner was embarked in HMAS Launceston at sea along with an escorting crewmember.
USCG Assist Fishing Vessel near Gloucester
Coast Guard crews assisted a disabled fishing vessel 35 miles east of Gloucester, Massachusetts, on Thursday. At about 4 p.m., Wednesday, the three person crew of the fishing vessel Kristin and Michael notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Boston that their vessel was experiencing engine problems and they had become disabled. Coast Guard Cutter Escanaba was diverted to the scene and took the Kristen and Michael in tow.

One of the world's largest non self-propelled cutter dredger vessels, which is also one of the largest of all cutter dredgers in the world with 5200 kW of cutter power, will feature Wärtsilä engines, both to generate power and to drive the dredging pump. The ship has been designed by the Design & Research Institute of Ship and Ocean Engineering at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and is being built for Jiangsu Haihong Construction Engineering Co. at the company's yard in China.
