Antwerp Port Volume up 3.3% in 9 months
The port of Antwerp continues its excellent performance, handling 161,671,573 tonnes of freight in the first nine months of this year, up 3.3% on the same period last year. The container volume in the first three quarters came to more than 7.5 million TEU. This represents growth of 4.0%, thus further expanding Antwerp’s market share for containers in the Hamburg-Le Havre range. The container volume rose during the first nine months by 3.7%, finishing at 88,639,126 tonnes.
Holland America Line Receives Association for Rescue at Sea Award
The captain and crew of Holland America Line’s ms Veendam were honored by the Association for Rescue at Sea with a prestigious AFRAS AMVER Award for the 2015 rescue of a pilot who ditched his aircraft in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. The Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System was implemented by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1958, and the AMVER Awards were created in 1971 to recognize vessels that participate in the program.
USN to Commission LCS Detroit
The Navy will commission its newest Freedom-variant littoral combat ship, Detroit (LCS 7), during an 11 a.m. EDT ceremony Saturday, Oct. 22 on Detroit's waterfront. Detroit is the sixth U.S. ship in our nation's history to be named in honor of city of Detroit. Adm.
