Shipping confidence improved for the third successive quarter in the three months to end-November 2016, according to the latest Shipping Confidence Survey from international accountant and shipping adviser Moore Stephens. In November 2016, the average confidence level expressed by respondents was 5.6 out of 10, equaling the highest rating since August 2015. All main categories of respondent were more confident than in August 2016, when the overall rating was 5.4.

Emergency Towing Vessel Contracted for Scotland
The U.K. Governmentâs Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) has awarded a five-year contract for a new Scottish Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) to Ardent Maritime Netherlands BV, to begin on December 31, 2016. The ship is the Ievoli Black, a 70-meter towing vessel of some 2,283 gross metric tons and a bollard pull of 139 metric tons, capable of firefighting operations, anchor handling, towing, research and underwater services.

Master Marine Lays First Keel of Four-vessel Order
Master Marine said it has laid the first keel of four new 67â x 28â fleet boats ordered in September. Each boat will be powered by a pair of S6R2-Y3MPTAW Mitsubishi 803 HP tier III diesel marine engines to be operated at 1,400 RPM coupled to Twin Disc 5321 gears. The boats will be set up with 10,400 gallons of fuel, 4,359 gallons of potable water and 9,500 gallons of ballast water along with providing a maximum 7â-9â working draft.

The City of Amsterdam Fire Department has taken delivery of its new firefighting vessel: the Jan van der Heyde IV. C-Job Naval Architects provided the concept design for the 17.6-meter vessel. Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld executed detailed design, engineering and vessel construction. The canals of Amsterdam are more than a world-famous tourist attraction. They also form an important part of the cityâs infrastructure.

US Naval Secretary Calls for 355-ship Fleet
In announcing the results of the 2016 Force Structure Assessment (FSA), U.S. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus recommended a 355-ship fleet, including 12 carriers, 104 large surface combatants, 52 small surface combatants, 38 amphibious ships and 66 submarines. The FSA is a year-long effort which began in January that was conducted to evaluate long-term defense security requirements for future naval forces today at the Pentagon in Arlington, Va.
Great Lakes/Seaway Iron Ore Trade Up in November
Shipments of iron ore on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway totaled 5.5 million tons in November, an increase of 13 percent compared to a year ago, Lake Carriersâ Association (LCA) reported. Shipments were also slightly ahead of the monthâs five-year average. Shipments from U.S. Great Lakes ports totaled 5 million tons in November, an increase of 19.5 percent. However, loadings at Canadian terminals in the Seaway fell nearly 26 percent to just 530,000 tons.
