Sonardyne Appoints Non-Executive Chairman
Sonardyne International Ltd. appointed Dr. Ralph Rayner as its new Non-Executive Chairman. Ralph is currently a Non-Executive Director of the company and will succeed outgoing Chairman Barry Clutton. Previously Finance Director and then Managing Director prior to his appointment as Chairman in 2009, Barry is retiring after 16 years with the company. Ralph is an internationally recognized figure within the offshore and oceanographic industries.

Ingalls Awarded $487 Million to Build USCG Cutter
Huntington Ingalls Industries announced today that the U.S. Coast Guard has awarded a $487 million, fixed-price-incentive-fee contract to its Ingalls Shipbuilding division to build the sixth National Security Cutter, Munro (WMSL 755). NSCs, the flagships of the Coast Guard's cutter fleet, were designed to replace the 378‐foot Hamilton-class high-endurance cutters, which entered service during the 1960s. Ingalls has delivered the first three.

The world watched as the Carnival Triumph sat still, dead in the water in the Gulf of Mexico after a main space fire caused a total loss of electrical power. For the 3,143 passengers and 1,000-plus crewmembers, there was no heat or air conditioning, toilets or sanitation, lights or ventilation. Fortunately, despite the seriousness of the fire, which was caused by a leaking fuel line, nobody was hurt.

New, New York Harbor Current Meter
NOAA uses data from a new current meter in New York harbor operated by New Jersey’s Stevens Institute of Technology. The system provides enhanced real-time information to mariners travelling through the nation’s second busiest port. The Stevens current meter measures the direction, speed, and volume of ocean currents in the harbor’s navigation channels, north of the Narrows between Brooklyn and Staten Island.
