A group of veteran seafarers are encouraging youngsters to consider what has become an important but âforgotten professionâ as the country prepares to celebrate Merchant Navy Day on September 3. Residents at the Royal Alfred Seafarersâ Society, a Surrey based home which provides dedicated accommodation and care to former seafarers and their dependants, said there is not enough awareness of the important role the Merchant Navy plays in our society among the younger generation.

Somewhere, Malcom McLean, "the father of containerization," is smiling. Yesterday the NOL Group, the Singapore-based container shipping and logistics company, celebrated with the Philippine Christian Foundation (PCF) the inauguration of the container school called âPhilippine Technical College.â The campus is unique in that it is built exclusively from APL cargo containers. NOL Group donated 53 containers to PCF and subsidized the purchase of 26 more.
JRC Delivers 15,000th Tornado Radar
Japan Radio Co., Ltd. (JRC) delivered its 15,000th Tornado radar from the Mitaka factory in Tokyo, Japan. Found in the JMA-5200 through to the JMA-9100 series, this new capability allowed the radars to perform the complex tasks associated with the companyâs other in-house developed technologies, Constaview and Target Enhancement Function (TEF). JRCâs Constaview allows full processing of data within milliseconds, generating a smooth and continuous (radar) image rotation.

Alaris Helps USCG "Go Green"
Alaris Companies (Alaris) is helping the U.S. Coast Guard to decrease energy use and greenhouse gas emissions with its fleet energy management program. Working under a previously announced Michael Baker Jr., Inc (Baker) Department of Homeland Security - Coast Guard contract for Architect / Engineering Services, engineers from Alaris completed an assessment and report for the 110-ft Patrol Boat (WPB) and 225-ft Seagoing Buoy Tender (WLB) class of cutters.
Dragon (Type 45 Destroyer) Comes Home
Dragon, the fourth Type 45 anti-air warfare destroyer built by BAE Systems for the Royal Navy, has set sail from the Clyde for the final time this week. Dragon set off from the companyâs Scotstoun yard this morning, with a combined BAE Systems and Royal Navy crew, as she embarked on the journey to her new home port of Portsmouth. The vessel will be formally handed over to the Royal Navy at a ceremony on Wednesday 31 August.
USGSâs R/V Kaho & R/V Muskie Dedicated
Two 17-knot high-speed research vessels for the U.S. Geological Survey are scheduled to be dedicated at Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, on Wednesday, August 31, 2011. R/V KAHO and R/V MUSKIE will replace two of the USGSâs oldest research vessels by the same names that are currently operating on Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, respectively. Ingalls Starts Fabrication on USCG Cutter
Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. (NYSE:HII) said that its Ingalls Shipbuilding division celebrated the "start of fabrication" of the U.S. Coast Guard's fourth National Security Cutter, Hamilton (WMSL 753). The shipbuilding milestone signifies that 100 tons of steel have been cut and fabricated utilizing a robotic plasma arc cutting machine at Ingalls' steel fabrication complex. Ingalls received the $480 million contract to build Hamilton in November 2010.
WWII Mine Disposed of at Site of Worldâs Largest Offshore Windfarm
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialist Ramora UK (www.ramorauk.com) reports that it has safely disposed of an unexploded World War II mine onsite at one of the worldâs largest offshore windfarm. The four-man Ramora UK team used a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to place a countermining charge next to the 1,500lb (680kg) mine which had been assessed as high-risk due to damage previously sustained to it.

Pirate Activity in the Red Sea/Eritrea Area
Further to our previous media releases detailing a potential new trend in pirate tactics in an area of the Red Sea off Eritrea (see Figure 1), Neptune Maritime Security has had the opportunity to examine the available data through our Intelligence Bank, including material supplied by intelligence sources, and presents the following report to interested parties. In July, pirate activity off Eritrea was limited to small numbers of pirates mounting similarly small-scale attacks on shipping.
