Greater Cruise Sector Investment Expected in 2017
According to its 2017 State of the Cruise Industry Outlook, trade association Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is predicting a steady pace of cruise travel interest and significant investment in the industry. Increase in cruise travel is expected to continue throughout 2017, with an estimated 25.3 million passengers expected to sail in 2017, a strong surge from 15.8 million just 10 years prior (2007). New Research to Examine Oil Spill Impacts
A research team led by University of South Florida College of Marine Science professor Dr. Steven Murawski has been awarded a $1 million grant to explore how oil spills, such as the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) in 2010, impact the economic, ecological and social system aspects of fishing communities. Asian Bulk Fleet Gains Value in 2016
In what has been a very difficult year for dry bulk, the values of regional fleets have changed quite a bit over 2016. Despite the down market, the Asian fleet is 7 percent more valuable at the end of the year. Since the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) low of 290 points in February this year, the index has recovered to above 1200 points. Asian owners have spent $1.6 billion on secondhand vessels, 27.5 percent of global spending throughout the year.
St. Lawrence Seaway Expecting a Strong Finish
A strong finish to the St. Lawrence Seaway’s 2016 shipping season is expected as freighters deliver raw materials and exports for North America’s industrial and agricultural sectors before the waterway closes December 31. "The St. Lawrence Seaway has been a significant export gateway for American grain and iron ore pellets this season and that’s expected to continue in these final weeks of December,” said Bruce R. Burrows, the new president of the Chamber of Marine Commerce.
