Ingalls Shipbuilding Begins Fabrication for Aegis Destroyer
Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division today marked the start of fabrication for the future Aegis-guided missile destroyer Paul Ignatius (DDG 117). Paul Ignatius, the ship's namesake, and his wife, Nancy Ignatius, the ship's sponsor, visited the shipyard to see steel cut for the destroyer. Paul Ignatius is the 31st Aegis destroyer to be built at Ingalls. The start of fabrication signifies the first 100 tons of steel cut.
Cable Trackers Help Diving Companies and Military
Trying to locate subsea power and communications cables has always been a difficult job. Regulations require cables be buried from several feet to several meters under the ocean bottom to prevent snagging by boat anchors and fishing trawls. The amount of overburden on a cable often means it’s too deep to be located with conventional metal detection equipment. The device that has proved most effective in finding them is a cable tracker. This system has two parts, a signal injector and a probe.
Emissions Scrubber Receives Class Approval
Langh Ship received final class approval from Germanischer Lloyd for its exhaust gas cleaning system on m/s Laura (pictured), a 1996-built a 6,500 DWT general cargo vessel equipped with a 6 MW main engine. Langh Ship is a shipping company that has developed its own closed loop scrubber. The system uses caustic soda to neutralize the SOx in the exhaust gas and cleans the process water so that it can be led to the sea.
Volvo Penta's New Keel Cooling Option
Volvo Penta is offering factory-built keel-cooled engines for the entire line of marine commercial inboard and sterndrive D4 3.7-liter and D6 5.5-liter engines. The D4/D6 keel-cooled version uses a twin circuit design, with keel coolers for both the high-temperature engine block circuit and low-temperature charge air cooler circuit. “Keel cooling provides unique advantages for commercial marine vessels,” said Jens Bering, manager product management for Volvo Penta North America.

Video: Containerships Collide in Suez Canal
Two large containerships collided in the Suez Canal off Port Said at roughly 5:30 local time Monday morning. The Hapag-Lloyd’s Colombo Express, a 324-meter German-flagged containership, collided with 332-meter Singapore-flagged Maersk Tanjong, causing several dropped containers and a large gash in the Colombo Express’ bow.
