LNG Focus at 2013 Fleet Optimization Conference
The practical challenges of using Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a marine fuel will be a major theme of the 2013 SHIPPINGInsight Fleet Optimization Conference, Oct. 22-24 at the Sheraton Stamford Hotel in Stamford, Conn. “A number of major shipping companies are placing orders for new LNG-powered ships and others are considering converting their existing ships to run on LNG,” said Frank Soccoli, coproducer, SHIPPINGInsight.
Kvichak Delivers 50’ Pilot Boat in Alaska
Kvichak Marine Industries, Inc. of Seattle, Wash., recently delivered the P/V Bering, a 50’ x 15.5’ pilot vessel to the Southwest Alaska Pilots Association (SWAPA). Bering will operate in the coastal areas of South Central Alaska. After acceptance of the Bering, the SWAPA crew and a Kvichak technician departed Seattle and began transiting north to Valdez, Alaska. The Bering’s delivery encompassed 1350 nautical miles averaging 25 knots over five days (53.9 hours run time on the engines).
Texas A&M Training Vessel to Visit New Orleans
The Port of New Orleans welcomed Texas A&M University at Galveston’s training vessel, TS General Rudder. The Texas Maritime Academy vessel and 50 cadets will be docked at the Julia Street Cruise Terminal through Thursday, Aug. The TS General Rudder comes to the Port of New Orleans on its first ever visit to the Crescent City after making stops at several other ports earlier this year including Mobile, Ala., and Fort Lauderdale, Key West, Pensacola, and Tampa, Fla.

Bayou LaBatre Alabama has long been recognized for the production of its many shipyards. Currently the Rodriguez Shipyard is in the process of adding several more tugs to the dozens that they have launched over the decades. From the computer assisted design work of owner Joey Rodriguez, the latest creation is a shallow draft triple screw tug for Roy Garber’s Sea Cypress LLC in Berwick Louisiana. At 78 by 28 feet Rodriguez Hull #307 has a ten-foot molded depth.

Redwise reported the successful repositioning of three ships globally, relocating an OSV, a dredger and a landing craft. The offshore support vessel Ocean Star, departed from the yard at Guangzhou, China on May 15 heading for her new homeport Dos Bocas, Mexico. The route took the vessel via great circle route across the Pacific Ocean to Panama Canal. Ocean Star safely arrived on the Caribbean side of Mexico on July 20 after a maiden voyage covering 10,676 nautical miles.
