Swiss marine power company WinGD has introduced an on-engine version of its iCER system, enabling the emissions reduction technology to be installed without impact on engine footprint. iCER is the first X-DF2.0 technology introduced to further boost the emissions performance and efficiency of the dual-fuel X-DF two-stroke engine series. X-DF engines running on LNG already offer a more than 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a reduction in air pollution compared to fuel oil. The addition of iCER delivers a 50% reduction of methane slip in gas mode.

Japanese engine builder Makita has selected ABB’s latest low-speed turbochargers for an engine being built for a chemical tanker, marking the first time that a Japanese-built engine will feature the compact, powerful A255-L turbochargers.The turbochargers will be applied on a 6S40ME-B9.5 engine built by Makita which manufactures MAN engines under the license. Swedish marine equipment provider Alfa Laval and Swiss engine developer WinGD, have developed a cascade exhaust gas cooling system that promises to improve the engine efficiency on ships that run on gas.The new Alfa Laval CEC-S system (cascade exhaust gas cooling system) will be incorporated into WinGD’s gas engines where it will be used for cooling and recycling purposes. ExxonMobil has announced it has added Mobilgard M420 to its range of advanced marine lubricants.Mobilgard M420 is a 20 BN oil that has been rigorously tested specifically for use in medium speed engines using fuels that comply with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) global 0.50 percent sulphur cap. The lubricant has received No Objection Letters from leading engine builders, including MAN ES and Wartsila.With the marine fuel landscape changing in the lead up to 2020, Mobilgard M420 has been formulated for use on vessels running on 0.50 percent or 0.10 percent sulphur fuels.

The IMO decision of April 2018, calling the international shipping industry to decarbonize and at least halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 was an important milestone and was largely welcomed by the global engine builders’ community. Although some parties found that the IMO target could have been even more ambitious, it clearly marked a paradigm shift: improvements in existing technologies will not be enough. Wärtsilä said it has signed a 10-year service partnership agreement with the Swiss company Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. (WinGD), a developer of two-stroke low-speed gas and diesel engines used for propulsion power in merchant shipping. Liverpool diesel-engine sales and maintenance specialists James Troop & Co is celebrating its landmark 150th anniversary with a surge in new business and export sales. The family-run company based in Runcorn is one of Liverpool’s longest-standing maritime and industrial businesses. It is reporting a 27pc sales hike on last year’s figures between January to June. Growth has steadily been recorded across the board with a notable increase in servicing work, spare parts sales and a massive surge in engine sales.

CMR Group’s chief technical officer, Patrice Flot, considers the current approach to sensing exhaust gas temperature (EGT) on high horsepower engine platforms and the capabilities provided by new digital technology. An EGT sensor measures the temperature of the engine exhaust gas to prevent damage to critical components such as the after treatment system, turbines and cylinder head exhaust valves. It can also be used inside the combustion chambers where hot gases are generated.

MAN Diesel & Turbo and its licensee Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding introduced its new high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, MAN SCR-HP, at an event in Tamano, Japan on April 11. The MAN SCR-HP is available for two-stroke engines of all bore sizes and reduces – through internal catalytic reaction – NOx exhaust emissions to IMO Tier III limits. With specially developed honeycombs and honeycomb materials, as well as an integrated mixing unit, the overall size of the reactor has been drastically reduced compared to typical market designs and its medium-speed counterpart.

Engineer wisdom: Nothing is worse as the right idea at the wrong time. But with the new ECOCHARGE Two-Stage Turbocharging System MAN D&T has reached both goals. Aside from the ever-popular “Fuel Consumption Reduction,” a leading player in the development of large combustion engines since the second halve of the 1980s has been reducing harmful exhaust emissions. In view of increased environmental awareness and the future price movements for fossil fuels, these two factors will remain a dominant force in future engine developments for the immediate future.

ECOCHARGE principle drives improved engine performance through two-stage turbocharging. MAN Diesel & Turbo has delivered its 1,000th turbocharger to two-stage turbocharged applications, the company announced. MAN has a long history in two-stage turbocharging and first evaluated the technology back in the 1970s. In late-2000, MAN focused on the technology to improve its four-stroke portfolio, resulting in the development of MAN ECOCHARGE, a combination of low- and high-pressure stages with intercooling that significantly improves engine performance.

ABB Turbocharging, at the CIMAC Congress 2016 presented its first dedicated turbocharger, for marine auxiliary engine applications, in a development cooperation with IHI Corporation. Designed for ease of operation and service, it supports a condition-based maintenance concept. The Marine Auxiliary Power (MXP) turbocharger is a key part of the company's strategy to focus on increased value for engine builders and operators in the large engine industry through segment- and application-specific turbocharging offerings.

MAN Diesel & Turbo’s two-stage turbocharging development project, ECOCHARGE, recently passed a significant milestone on its way to a successful market introduction. The company reports that individual MAN TCR20 and MAN TCX17 units – combined as a single, two-stage turbocharging system – has had a first run on an MAN 12V35/44 gas engine on a test bed at its Augsburg, Germany works. The company reports that the ECOCHARGE system has been developed for both gas- and HFO-burning engines. Now that the TCX series has proven its strengths and functionality on the burner rig, the new ECOCHARGE system will run over the coming months on the engine to prove its strengths and functionality.

Aiming to boost its operations in the Asia-Pacific territory, control instrumentation and electrical engineering specialist CMR Group has invested in a new Korea office. CMR Group Korea has opened in Busan under managing director Brian Kim who will be leading the company’s operation there. According to the company, the initial focus will be on new business development as CMR returns to the domestic market, looking after sales and marketing for the group’s range of products for the marine, engine and nuclear business sector.

ExxonMobil Marine Fuels and Lubricants upgraded its marine engine condition monitoring program. The MobilGard cylinder condition monitoring (CCM) program now has the functionality for onboard oil samples to be compared against ExxonMobil’s database of nearly 100,000 test results, helping operators to protect and optimize the performance of their engines, the company said.“The upgrade of the MobilGard CCM program comes at a time when engine builders continue to push the boundaries in developing next generation models…

ExxonMobil Marine Fuels & Lubricants has launched Mobilgard 5100, a specially formulated cylinder oil designed to mitigate the effects of cold corrosion in new design two-stroke marine engines operating on heavy fuel oil. Mobilgard 5100 joins Mobilgard 560 VS and Mobilgard 570 as the latest addition to ExxonMobil’s range of world class cylinder oils, with each product specifically engineered to help ship operators increase vessel reliability and reduce operating costs. ExxonMobil created Mobilgard 5100, a 100 BN cylinder oil, working in close collaboration with leading marine engine builders.

One of the  new tools that engine builders are using these days to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions is Valve Control Management (VCM), ABB’s variable valve train system, more so since duel-fuel engines become an increasingly popular choice by shipowners. Initially introduced in the shore-based gas plant sector, Christoph Rofka, Senior General Manager for New Business at ABB conjectured at that time and with an eye to the future:  “A technology like this speaks to the increasing trend to explore dual-fuel options and create solutions for gas. Wärtsilä announce their new medium-speed 46DF engine which is capable of operating on natural gas, heavy fuel oil, or marine diesel oil. “With this newly launched product, Wärtsilä has raised the industry standard even higher, since it offers simultaneously drastically lower specific fuel consumption, both in gas and diesel fuel mode, remarkably higher output, and extremely attractive lifecycle costs compared to any other alternative currently available on the market,” says Mr Lars Anderson, Vice President 4-stroke Sales, Wärtsilä Ship Power.
