Ferry Runs Aground in Boston Harbor

Four people were injured Friday morning when a Boston-bound ferry ran aground off Long Island in Boston Harbor, the U.S. Coast Guard said. At approximately 7:45 a.m., J.P. Vega, operations manager for Boston Harbor Cruises, reported to Coast Guard watchstanders that the ferry Lightening ran aground with 84 people aboard.The Coast Guard said it launched rescue crews from Station Boston and Point Allerton to assist in the response alongside state and local partner agencies.The four…

USCG Arctic Satellites aim to Add Margin of Safety

The U.S. Coast Guard’s mission of keeping the seas safe will soon get an additional boost from space with two polar satellites. The two satellites, called “cube satellites” or “cubesats” for their small size of about 60 square centimeters, or a little under 2 feet, will be part of a payload on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California Nov. 28. Although the Coast Guard has used satellite technology for years, these two are the first to be entirely dedicated to a Coast Guard mission. The initiative is part of the U.S.

Ship Finance International in USD 270mln Pact for Three Vessels

Bermuda-based Ship Finance International (SFL) has entered into lease financing agreements totaling $270 million with an Asian-based institution to finance three 10,600 TEU container vessels acquired in 2018.The vessels are employed under long term time charters to Maersk Line A/S  until 2024, with options to extend the charters by up to four additional years, the ship owning and chartering company said.Each Lease Financing has a term of more than 10 years, with an option to purchase the vessel back after six years, at expiry of the firm period of the charters to Maersk.

Ship Finance International Sells Older VLCC

Bermuda-based shipowner Ship Finance International (SFL) announced that it has agreed to sell the 2002-built VLCC Front Falcon to an unrelated third party.Delivery to the new owner is expected later this quarter, and the net sales price will be approximately $30.7 million. The Company does not expect a material book effect from the transaction.Divesting of older vessels is part of Ship Finance's strategy to continuously renew and diversify its fleet.

Solstad Tallies Equinor Contracts

Norwegian owner Solstad Offshore ASA informs it has been awarded a contract from Equinor for the two-year charter of the 2005-built platform supply vessel (PSV) Normand Skipper, and an extension for the 2013-built PSV Sea Falcon, for work in the U.K.The 92-meter Normand Skipper will commence in November or December 2018, Solstad said. Ferry Hits Yachts in Heavy Fog off Isle of Wight

A ferry collided with at least two yachts and then ran aground in heavy fog off the Isle of Wight in southern England on Sunday, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said.The Coastguard said a member of the public had called emergency services after hearing cries of help from Cowes Harbour, but after an extensive search by rescue teams it said no one was in the water or missing.Red Funnel, the operator of the Red Falcon Ferry, which had 56 people on board, said it had been refloated.

A naming ceremony was held Monday at Japan Marine United Corporation’s (JMU) Kure shipyard for the first newly built containership painted in Ocean Network Express' (ONE) corporate color.The new magenta box ship, named ONE Stork, is the 10th of 15 new 14,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) vessels ordered by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK). It will be chartered by Singapore-based ONE, which began operations on April 1 by integrating the container businesses of Japanese ocean carriers Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Mitsui O.S.K.

NYK LNG Carrier Rescues Sailors in Caribbean

Marvel Falcon, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier owned by NYK, offered humanitarian assistance to four sailors requesting rescue on on May 13, said a press release from the company. The LNG carrier had been sailing from the port of Balboa, Panama, to the Sabine Pass LNG terminal in the U.S. state of Louisiana when the small boat was spotted. The rescued sailors had departed from Port Limon, Costa Rica, on May 7 to deliver fuel to another boat, but they experienced engine trouble on May 8 and had drifted at sea for the next few days.

David Spivak Leaves Seaspan Corporation as CFO

Seaspan Corporation announced  that David Spivak, Chief Financial Officer of Seaspan, has given notice that he is exercising his right to terminate his employment with Seaspan effective June 29, 2018 to pursue other opportunities. Spivak will continue in his current role until May 5, 2018, after which Ryan Courson will be appointed Chief Financial Officer and Spivak will continue with Seaspan as Special Advisor to the President and Chief Executive Officer through the end of June. Courson joined Seaspan in March 2018 as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development.

Courson to Replace Spivak as Seaspan CFO

Ship owner Seaspan Corporation announced that Ryan Courson will take over as the company’s chief financial officer following David Spivak’s decision to leave the post in early May. Spivak will continue as CFO until May 5 and will stay on as special advisor to the president and chief executive officer through the end of June. Courson joined Seaspan in March 2018 as senior vice president of corporate development. Prior to joining Seaspan, he spent three years at Falcon Edge Capital, and before that worked at Teton Capital as an investment professional and acting CFO of Teton’s largest investment, Davos Brands. Courson began his career working at Berkshire Hathaway. He is fluent in Mandarin and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Washington University in St.
