W&D to Build Two ASD Tugs for Moran Towing
Washburn & Doughty, of East Boothbay, Maine, has announced the execution of a new vessel construction contract with Moran Towing Corporation, of New Canaan, Connecticut, to build two 86’ x 36’ ASD-Type Ship Assist and Escort Z-Drive Tugs, with options to build up to ten vessels.In addition to the two firm tugs, which will be delivered in 2020, the contract provides Moran with four, two-tug options keyed to production milestones of the tugs then under construction.W&D’s team of in-house naval architects and designers will complete the production designs for the new 86’ tugs based on the contract plans and regulatory package prepared by Jensen Maritime Consultants, Inc.

Jensen Designs Tugs for Moran Towing

Keel Laid for Foss Tier IV Tugboat

ESG Delivers Tractor Tug to Bisso Offshore
Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) delivereed the Reverse Tractor Tug Archie T. Higgins to Bisso Offshore, LLC in late 2015. Upon arrival in Louisiana and at the mouth of the Mississippi River, the vessel went right to work escorting its first ship northbound to New Orleans. The vessel names honors Archibald (Archie) Thomas Higgins, Jr., who passed away earlier this year. Higgins helped lead the company’s operations from 1973 until 1995. Higgins also served on the Board of Directors of E.N. Bisso and Son until the time of his death.

Navigating the ABCs of SCR
On the way to Tier IV compliance, it turns out that experience counts. In late February, the nation’s first Tier IV, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) tugboat was christened. That’s probably not earthshaking news all by itself – after all, SCR isn’t all that new – but the event likely ushers in a new era of powerful domestic workboats that also come with a greener environmental footprint. Fireboat Dedicated at Long Beach Port
A new fireboat was officially welcomed into service Wednesday at the Port of Long Beach, representing a significant leap forward in protecting the harbor and the flow of trade through the nation’s second-busiest seaport. In a dockside ceremony attended by 100 invited guests, the fireboat named “Protector” was dedicated in memory of Donald Domenic DiMarzo, a former Long Beach Fire Department captain. DiMarzo served as a fire marshal aboard the USS Intrepid in the Pacific during World War II.
Webb Institute Senior Awarded Crowley Scholarship

Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship to Tyler Gray-Hoehn, class of 2018 at the Webb Institute, a highly-selective undergraduate institution in Glen Cove, N.Y., specializing in naval architecture and marine engineering. Gray-Hoehn, who hails from Brookfield, Wisc., was recognized for his dedication, academic excellence and leadership as a student Webb. He is senior class president and vice president of the Webb Institute’s Student Organization (SO), and has also been Webb’s Motor Boat Chair, Van Chair and a member of the Honor Council.
Kirby Orders 2 More Workboats from NBBB
Ice Floe, LLC dba Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB) informs it has received orders for the construction of two new 120’ x 35’ x 19’-3” Twin Screw Tugboats for Kirby Offshore Marine, LLC. Keels will be laid for both vessels this fall, with delivery of the first vessel scheduled for May 2017 and the second vessel is scheduled for delivery in November 2017. Upon delivery, the new vessels will be used for tow operations. According to the builder, each of the new 120’ x 35’ x 19’-3” tugboats will be powered by two Caterpillar 3516C, 2,447 BHP at 1,600 rpm main engines with Reintjes reduction gears turning two NautiCAN fixed pitched propellers with fixed nozzles. These vessels will also have two C7.1 Caterpillar generators for electrical service.
