Kelvin Hughes Showcases Drone Detection Technology
Kelvin Hughes first launched its dedicated drone detection system earlier this year incorporating SharpEye SxV 360 degree radar and electro optic cameras with the Single Mast Solution (SMS) security system. At DSEI 2017 Kelvin Hughes has announced it will be demonstrating the next evolution of its drone detection and tracking technology. The SMS-D (‘D’ meaning drone) is a dedicated drone detection and tracking system now featuring a thermal camera and video tracker that acquires the drone target using the initial radar detection information.
Kelvin Hughes Opens Second US Office
Kelvin Hughes Ltd, navigation solutions provider, has opened a Kelvin Hughes USA LLC Washington office, in Alexandria, Virginia. The primary role of the new office is to expand on the existing Kelvin Hughes business and presence in the US, providing a greater level of local sales and support for US-based customers. The company already has a service centre in New Orleans. Kelvin Hughes has three offices in the UK, where it has its headquarters, as well as regional offices in The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Singapore and China. In addition to the SharpEye radar, Kelvin Hughes produces a range of navigation equipment, data services and paper navigation products for the commercial, military and leisure sectors.

Kelvin Hughes Rolls Out Its New ECDIS

Japan Hydrographic Assoc. Chooses Kelvin Hughes

Indo-China Ship Management Purchases Kelvin Hughes Radars
The Indo-China Ship Management Company Ltd. has purchased Kelvin Hughes Nucleus3 radars for the retrofit of two ships. The Indo-China Ship Management Company is overseeing the retrofit of a product tanker in Dalian, China with a Kelvin Hughes Nucleus3 6000 radar. The company has also retrofitted a cargo vessel in Cammell Laird Shipyard in Gibraltar with Kelvin Hughes Nucleus3 5000 radar. Both ships were retrofitted with the Kelvin Hughes radars in dry dock. Launched in 2001, Kelvin Hughes’s Nucleus3 uses the latest in radar technology and offers a wide range of sophisticated and flexible operating modes. Features in clued automatic tracking of up to 50 targets at any one time and the Kelvin Hughes patented tracker ball and push button control.
ECI Acquires Kelvin Hughes
ECI Partners LLP (“ECI”), the UK mid-market buyout specialist, has acquired Kelvin Hughes in a $109.3m transaction out of Smiths Group plc, the UK listed technology company. Kelvin Hughes is a leading supplier of navigation products and services for the Naval and Commercial marine sectors. The purchase price comprises $100.9m which was paid in cash on completion of the purchase and a deferred payment of up to $8.4m depending on certain conditions being satisfied. Senior members of Kelvin Hughes management invested alongside ECI, becoming shareholders in the business. Kelvin Hughes has a highly innovative product range, which is designed to provide mariners with the most advanced navigation systems and services available.
Kelvin Hughes Announce Saab AIS Deal
Kelvin Hughes is now able to supply both Automatic Information Systems (AIS) and Voyage Data Recorders (VDR), as part of its fully compliant integrated bridge systems (IBS). Saab Transponder Tech, following an original equipment manufacture (OEM) agreement between Saab and Kelvin Hughes, will supply the AIS. AIS systems are being made compulsory as part of the changes to SOLAS V, which go into effect in July 2002. The systems are designed to work in tandem with a ship’s radar system to improve the identification and location of other vessels. Kelvin Hughes had several criteria that were important when selecting a third party AIS supplier including early type approval and hardware availability.
OSI and Kelvin Hughes Collaborate
Offshore Systems International Ltd. (OSI) announced that its systems division, Offshore Systems Ltd. (OSL), has entered into an agreement with Kelvin Hughes Limited, part of Smith Marine Systems, to jointly pursue opportunities to supply electronic navigation systems to military customers. With an initial focus on the UK, the companies will offer navigation systems compliant to the NATO Warship Electronic Chart Display and Information System standard, referred to in the industry as "WECDIS". Qinetiq Type Approves Kelvin Hughes VDR
Kelvin Hughes has been awarded type approval for its NDR 2002 Voyage Data Recorder (VDR). The type approval includes two different crash survival modules (CSM), and has been awarded by QINETIQ formerly DERA. The type approval is unique as Kelvin Hughes is the only company offering two crash survival modules with type approval in its VDR. One is manufactured by L#, the other by Smiths Aerospace of which Kelvin Hughes is the marine systems business. Offering two crash survival modules allows Kelvin Hughes greater flexibility and guarantees product availability.
World’s Fastest Ferry Using SharpEye Radar
Kelvin Hughes, a designer and supplier of navigation and surveillance systems, announced that its SharpEye radar is now in continuous use on the world’s fastest ferry, operating between Argentina and Uruguay. Launched in Oct 2013 by the President of Argentina, Christina Fernandez de Kirchner, and operated by Buquebus of Uruguay, the ferry, named Francisco after the Argentinian-born Pope Francis, carries up to 1024 passengers and crew together with 150 cars on a daily basis between Buenos Aires and Montevideo.
Kelvin Hughes Launched ETD for Radar
Kelvin Hughes has recently launched "Enhanced Target Detection" (ETD) as an enhancement to its MantaDigital range of wide-screen radars. This new facility enhances the display of slow-moving or stationary targets without interfering with the normal radar appearance or operation. ETD, the latest innovation in the MantaDigital range provided by Kelvin Hughes, treats stationary and moving returns differently, highlighting the moving ones by displaying them in a different color. Kelvin Hughes has appointed Ron Nailer as the new managing director of Kelvin Hughes Ltd., succeeding Dr. Martin Jones, who has returned to the parent company - Smiths Group Plc head office - to pursue his responsibilities as director of Technology and Innovation of Smiths' Industrial Group. Russell Gould has been appointed managing director of Kelvin Hughes Ltd, part of the Specialty Engineering Division of Smiths Group plc. Russell joined Kelvin Hughes in 1985 as a graduate engineer responsible for the development of new navigation products. In 1995 he became head of radar techniques and was appointed engineering and operations director in 2001. For the past 5 years he has been the Company's commercial business director.

Smit, originally from Rotterdam, served in the Royal Dutch Navy for six years as a Technical Specialist before working as a Sales Engineer for one of Kelvin Hughes’ main distributors.
Kelvin Hughes Bridge Chosen for Queen Mary 2
Kelvin Hughes has earned its way onboard the most prestigious current cruise ship newbuild project. Cunard selected Kelvin Hughes' fully integrated bridge system is to be installed on board its eagerly anticipated new flagship, Queen Mary 2. At over 1,132 ft. (345 m) long, Queen Mary 2 will be the largest passenger liner ever constructed. Construction is due to commence in January at the Alstom-owned yard, Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint Nazaire, France, which has had a key role in the equipment specification process. She is expected to be launched in 2003. Kelvin Hughes will supply a flat screen bridge system comprising eight screens from which Queen Mary 2's navigation systems, radars, dynamic positioning system, engine monitoring capability, can be controlled.

Kelvin Hughes has been acquired by HENSOLDT (formerly Airbus Defense Electronics) as a result of an agreement by its owners ECI Partners to sell its investment in the company. “Following the buyout from Smiths Group, ECI has been a consistent and supportive partner as we have consolidated our position as a global leader in surveillance and security radar solutions,” said Kelvin Hughes CEO, Russell Gould. 70th Anniversary of First Type-approved Maritime Radar
Kelvin Hughes is celebrating 70 years of radar in 2017. In 1947 the first Type 1 radar was produced and installed on a new fishing trawler, the Type 1 then went on to be the first type approved radar, gaining its type approval certificate on August 11, 1948, the first radar to do so. Kelvin Hughes, a maritime navigation and security surveillance radar, has a history stretching back over 250 years. Over the course of that period, the company has been responsible for a number of significant technology ‘firsts’, including the first navigation radar for commercial ships to be type-approved.
