Kelvin Hughes first launched its dedicated drone detection system earlier this year incorporating SharpEye SxV 360 degree radar and electro optic cameras with the Single Mast Solution (SMS) security system. At DSEI 2017 Kelvin Hughes has announced it will be demonstrating the next evolution of its drone detection and tracking technology. The SMS-D (‘D’ meaning drone) is a dedicated drone detection and tracking system now featuring a thermal camera and video tracker that acquires the drone target using the initial radar detection information.
Kelvin Hughes Rolls Out Its New ECDIS
Kelvin Hughes has introduced its latest Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) designed for commercial ships as well as naval and coastguard patrol vessels. Available as a standalone ECDIS or as part of a truly multifunction bridge display network with multiple operator positions, the new ECDIS is type approved to meet the latest International Hydrographic Office (IHO) and International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. It offers an optional mil-spec processor with advanced LED display hardware in a fully integrated, easy to install and retrofit, console package.
HENSOLDT Acquires Kelvin Hughes
Kelvin Hughes has been acquired by HENSOLDT (formerly Airbus Defense Electronics) as a result of an agreement by its owners ECI Partners to sell its investment in the company. “Following the buyout from Smiths Group, ECI has been a consistent and supportive partner as we have consolidated our position as a global leader in surveillance and security radar solutions,” said Kelvin Hughes CEO, Russell Gould. Completion of the transaction remains subject to regulatory clearances. HENSOLDT, an independent sensor house, is a provider of radar and IFF systems on airborne, naval and land platforms.
AMSG Wins Contract to Upgrade Vessel Tracking
A contract to upgrade the ‘nerve center’ for shipping at the Barrow Island port proves the resources sector is continuing to fuel big opportunities for Australian firms. Australian Maritime Systems Group (AMSG) has been awarded a contract by Chevron Australia to design and install a new Vessel Tracking Service (VTS) system to manage shipping to and from the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project on Barrow Island, 60km off the north-west coast of Western Australia. AMSG Managing Director John Sugarman said the new Vessel Tracking System will utilize state-of-the-art radar and software systems.

Kelvin Hughes radar for RN's River-class OPVs
A world leader in the design and manufacture of navigation and security surveillance radar, Kelvin Hughes announced in April 2015 that it had been selected to supply its SharpEye systems for the new Batch 2 River-class offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) - HMS Forth, HMS Medway and HMS Trent. Today, the company is delighted to announce that it will also be supplying the same industry-leading radar equipment for the two latest Batch 2 ships – HMS Tamar and HMS Spey. Each ship will be equipped with a SharpEye I-Band radar for helicopter control and navigation as well as an E/F-Band SharpEye™ radar for navigation and collision avoidance. 70th Anniversary of First Type-approved Maritime Radar

In 1947 the first Type 1 radar was produced and installed on a new fishing trawler, the Type 1 then went on to be the first type approved radar, gaining its type approval certificate on August 11, 1948, the first radar to do so. Radio Holland's NavCom for Six Malaysian Patrol Crafts
Radio Holland Malaysia (RHM) secured a contract from Destini Shipbuilding & Engineering for the supply of Navigation and Communication equipment on board of six New Generation Patrol Crafts (NGPC). The vessels are being built for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). The scope of work encompasses detailed design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the Navigation and Communication equipment including the Steering System and Thermal Cameras. The vessels will play an important role in maritime search and rescue operations.
‘A Step Forward in Submarine Radar Technology’
Kelvin Hughes, a U.K. baesd designer and supplier of navigation and security surveillance systems, announced that it can now bring all the benefits of its SharpEye radar technology to submarines. Traditionally, submarines only use radar for navigation in and out of port because a high power RF transmission can compromise its ability to remain undetected. However, with its low power output – up to 300W as opposed to the 25kW of legacy submarine radar systems – SharpEye can reduce the probability of detection by ESM systems.

Kelvin Hughes bags Marseille VTS Radar Contract
Kelvin Hughes has been awarded the contract for the second phase of a radar system installation by the Port of Marseille Fos in Southern France. The Enfield-based company supplied five SBS-700 radar systems earlier this year that were integrated with the port's Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS). The second phase has seen two more, identical models installed and commissioned at the port in July. Kelvin Hughes' SBS-700 radar system is specifically designed to meet the requirements of a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system as defined in IALA recommendation V-128.
Singapore Navy Chooses SharpEye Navigation Radar
Kelvin Hughes will supply its SharpEye navigation radar for the Republic of Singapore Navy's Littoral Mission Vessel (LMV) program, which includes eight new vessels to replace the current fleet of Fearless-class patrol vessels. The lead ship of the fleet, Independence, was delivered in May of this year equipped with two I-Band (X-band) SharpEye systems. A further seven vessels will be similarly equipped with the same I-Band SharpEye systems. With its solid-state technology, SharpEye does not require a magnetron and transmits a low power, patented pulse sequence.

VTS Radar Systems Chosen for Port of Marseille Fos
A world leader in the design and supply of navigation and security surveillance systems, Kelvin Hughes has been contracted by French company AVON Communications to supply five of its SBS-700 radar systems for integration with the Marseille Fos Port Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS). The port is made up of two harbours, the ‘Eastern harbour’ with 1,000 hectares, located in the city of Marseille itself, and the ‘Western harbour’ with 12,000 hectares which is located in Fos, 70 km from the town.
SharpEye Radar for Qatari Coastguard Patrol Boats
Kelvin Hughes is to supply its SharpEye S-band radar together with its new 12kW radar for 17 patrol boats currently being built at ARES Shipyard, Turkey for Qatar’s Coast and Borders Security Department. All the electronic equipment for the vessels - which include 24m, 34.5m and 48m versions of the ARES Shipyard Hercules series - will be supplied by Elektro Deniz of Turkey which has contracted Kelvin Hughes to provide the radar systems. The SharpEye S-band will be used for surface search and the 12kW radar for navigation.

Kelvin Hughes has been contracted by Rodman Polyships to supply X and S band SharpEye radar systems for a range of new vessels being supplied to the Royal Oman Police Coast Guard (ROPCG). With its advanced target detection capability, the solid-state SharpEye radar provides an industry-leading level of maritime situational awareness, Kelvin Hughes said. Through the Doppler processing of the radar returns, SharpEye can identify objects with a low Radar Cross Section (RCS), from semi-submersed objects to the smallest of uncooperative craft, even in the most severe of weather conditions.

Maritime Security Experts Convene in San Diego
Maritime security experts from federal, state and local jurisdictions are meeting in San Diego this week as part of Maritime Security 2015 West. Attendees from Turkey, Japan, United Arab Emirates, France, U.K., and New Zealand joined participants from across the U.S. and Canada to examine challenges and share solutions. A special tour of the Unified Port of San Diego was conducted to offer a glimpse behind the scenes of some of the port’s busy terminals handling commodities ranging from soda ash to bananas to automobiles.

Port of Vitória Orders Hi-res Radars
Navigation and security surveillance systems company Kelvin Hughes announced it has been contracted to supply two of its SBS-900-2 SharpEye radar systems for the Porto de Vitória in Brazil. The equipment will be provided through Spain’s Indra. The SBS-900-2 is from the ‘advanced’ radar family of the Kelvin Hughes Shore Based Sensor radar range. The radar system consists of a single X-Band SharpEye radar transceiver mounted in an environmentally sealed enclosure on a mast close to the antenna.
