Canadian shipbuilder Seaspan Shipyards announced it is investing $1.35 million to increase training and apprenticeship opportunities for Indigenous students aged 19 through 30 interested in building a career in the trades, including in the growing shipbuilding and marine sector. Nova Scotia-based Bluedrop Performance Learning  through its subsidiary Bluedrop Training & Simulation Inc has been awarded a contract to provide advanced training systems for the Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels.Seaspan Shipyards has awarded Bluedrop contract for work on the Canadian Coast Guard’s (CCG) new Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV), said a press release.Bluedrop represents one of several Atlantic Canadian suppliers to date that Seaspan is working with to meet its commitments under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).Bluedrop designs and develops highly specialized, high performance, tactical training for frontline operators of equipment working in complex environments and high-risk situations.

Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) has awarded Ottawa-based Lockheed Martin Canada (Lockheed Martin), a contract for work on Canada’s new Joint Support Ships (JSS).At $118M, this is the largest contract package that Seaspan will award for work on the JSS, said a press release.Lockheed Martin is one of several major systems integrators that Seaspan is working with in order to meet its commitments under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).Seaspan and Lockheed Martin have an established relationship as partners on several programs for the Royal Canadian Navy and, more recently, the Royal New Zealand Navy, in maintaining and upgrading vital military assets.Lockheed Martin will provide a state of the art Command Management System based around the CMS 330 for the JSS.

Seaspan Shipyards has contracted Hawboldt Industries to provide deck equipment for a pair of naval supply vessels it is building for the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).Under the two contracts, which together are valued at $8 million, Hawboldt will design and build the anchoring and mooring packages and the primary cranes for the two Joint Support Ships (JSS) being built at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyard.Seaspan began building the first JSS in June.

Mark Lamarre, who most recently served as CEO of Australian Shipbuilding Company (ASC), has been named CEO of Seaspan Shipyards effective immediately. ASC Shipbuilding chief executive officer Mark Lamarre will step down after three years at the helm of the Australian naval warship builder. According to the shipyard, Lamarre has decided to return to the United States for family reasons.   ASC shipbuilding general manager Jim Cuthill will step in as acting CEO from December 15.   On November 24, ASC secured the shipbuilding role for the initial phase of the Offshore Patrol Vessel project in Adelaide in 2018-2020.   The company is pursuing additional shipbuilding projects, including the Future Frigate program from 2020.

Australian shipbuilders Austal Limited and ASC Shipbuilding have joined forces for the build of the SEA5000 Future Frigates Program. Under this arrangement, the two say they will collaborate in support of the program, pooling complementary strengths, skills and experience. “The Austal/ASC Shipbuilding teaming arrangement offers a compelling, low risk, Australian shipbuilding solution for each of the three shortlisted international designers; BAE, Fincantieri and Navantia,” Austal CEO, David Singleton said.
