Engine Contract Awarded for LCS 27

Fairbanks Morse said it has been selected to build and deliver the main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE) that will power the U.S. Navy’s newest Freedom class Littoral Combat Ship, LCS 27. Construction of the engines will begin later this year, and they are scheduled to be delivered in 2019 to Marinette Marine Corporation in Marinette, Wis., where the new warship is being built. The engine manufacturer will then support installation and testing including sea trials for the vessel. The two 16-cylinder Colt-Pielstick PA6B STC diesel engines will deliver over 12 MW of propulsion power and are among the largest medium speed diesel engines manufactured in the U.S. The U.S.

Engines Selected for CMA CGM’s LNG Mega Ships

WinGD X-DF engines will power CMA CGM’s record setting containerships. French shipping line CMA CGM has chosen WinGD’s largest, 92 cm bore, dual-fuel low-speed engine to power its series of groundbreaking box ships – presently the largest on order globally, and the first ultra large container vessels with capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The series of nine ultra-large 22,000 TEU capacity containerships will be built at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd.

MAN B&W Marks LNG Milestone

Three of the world’s largest LNG-carriers successfully tested their propulsion packages at the end of last month. Each vessel is powered by two 6S70ME-C electronically controlled, two-stroke, lowspeed diesel engines, and this event marks a first for MAN Diesel in the LNG sector. The engines will operate on HFO. The vessels are part of a Qatargas project that comprises an impressive 45 vessels, each fitted with two MAN B&W low-speed prime movers, making for a grand total of 90 electronically controlled two-stroke engines. Of these, 31 QFlex carriers will receive two MAN B&W 6S70ME-C engines, each developing 18,660 kW, while the 14 larger QMax carriers will employ two MAN B&W 7S70ME-C engines, each rated at 21,770 kW at 91 rpm.

Deal for Floating LNG Powerplant in China

As the proliferation of LNG use spreads rapidly in the maritime and energy sectors, word from China is that Wison Offshore & Marine has signed an MoU with  Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group, on a joint effrot to develop medium to large-scale floating LNG power generation barges. Wison brings a wealth of experience and integration capability in floating LNG facilities, while Shanghai Electric is a leader in core gas power equipment and EPC services for international power projects. Based on the Floating LNG Storage Regasification and Power Generation (FSRP) solution developed by Wison earlier on, both parties will join forces to build up capabilities throughout FSRP project life cycle from product development…

WinGD Drives to Digitisation with Shipdex

Maintaining the rapid pace to apply the latest digital technology to its low-speed diesel and dual-fuel engines and corporate processes, engine designer Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. (WinGD) has announced its participation in the Shipdex community. The Shipdex organisation has introduced a version of the S1000DTM specification for digital data exchange applied in the aerospace and defence industry, and adapted to the marine sector. This S1000D specification standardizes electronic dissemination of technical data to equipment makers, shipyards and ship owners.

Bergen Engines Becomes New Tognum Subsidiary

As of today, July 1, Norwegian engine manufacturer Bergen Engines AS becomes part of the Tognum Group. Following the acquisition of Tognum AG by the joint venture of Rolls-Royce plc. and Daimler AG, the former Rolls-Royce subsidiary Bergen Engines was merged into the Tognum Group. With that Tognum, the propulsion and power solution specialist, adds medium-speed diesel and gas engines with power outputs up to 10 MW to its engine portfolio. Tognum supplies high-speed diesel and gas engines carrying the MTU brand with power ranges of 75 to 10,000kW and 100-2,150kW respectively.

The world’s first container feeder vessel refit to use natural gas was commissioned in late August in Bremerhaven, ushering in a new era in the use of alternative fuels across the global maritime sector. As ferry operators search for efficiency to reduce pollutants and operating costs, the importance of design, quality construction, and efficient propulsion become ever more important. Such is clearly the case with the Netherlands-based ferry operator Rederij Doeksen, whose two BMT Nigel Gee designed ferries are currently under construction at Strategic Marine’s Vietnam yard for operations between Harlingen on the mainland and the islands of Terschelling and Vlieland. in the Netherlands’ Wadden Sea.

Wärtsilä Supplies Propulsion for Fishing Vessel

Lunar Fishing Company Ltd, based in Scotland, is replacing its existing Lunar Bow purse seiner trawler with a new ship having the same name. The primary considerations were to achieve both economic and environmental benefits through selecting the market’s most efficient propulsion machinery. The vessel is being built at the Karstensens Skibsvaerft shipyard in Denmark and will feature a fully integrated propulsion solution from Wärtsilä. The main engine chosen is the Wärtsilä 31, listed by Guinness World Records as being the world’s most efficient four-stroke diesel engine.

Management Changes at Resource Power Group

The Resource Power Group appointed Chimas Sylve as Spare Parts Coordinator at its new Deer Park facility near the Houston Ship Channel. “Chimas brings with him knowledge of not only the MaK engine line, but also MaK gas engines as well as the entire Caterpillar engine line,” said Mike Kriner, Branch Manager for the Houston facility. “Our Houston facility is less than a year old, but is already growing rapidly both in medium speed engine and turbocharger services,” said Mike. Previously Mr. Sylve spent nine years at the parent company, Louisiana Cat, where he provided both parts and service support for the Caterpillar line of engines including the MaK gas and diesel products.

Langh Tech Scrubbers, EGR Water Treatment for New Box Ships

Three container vessels on order at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China for Eimskip Island ehf and Royal Arctic Line A/S will be equipped with Langh Tech hybrid scrubber systems and water treatment systems for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The newbuilds are of a new energy-efficient design developed by Deltamarin. The in-line scrubbers are multi-inlet installations, where the main engine and auxiliary engines are connected to the same scrubber tower. In addition, the MAN Diesel & Turbo two-stroke main engines of the newbuildings are equipped with EGR systems.

Kongsberg Simulators with Multiple DNV Approvals

Engine room simulators approved to the highest DNV certificate level. A total of 14 Kongsberg Maritime Engine Room Simulator models received new Det Norske Veritas (DNV) Statements of Compliance in December 2011. The approvals are according to the revised standards laid out in DNV – Standard for Certification of Maritime Simulators No. 2.14 January 2011, which is based on the requirements of STCW Convention, Regulation I/12 and include the new 2010 amended convention that came into force from January 1st 2012.

Dual-fuel Engines for DEME’s New Dredger

Anglo Belgian Corporation, a manufacturer of medium speed diesel engines, announced the sale of two 16VDZD dual fuel engines that will power a new build vessel for the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME. This agreement was officialized with the Dutch shipyard Royal IHC. The commissioning of the dredger Minerva is scheduled for late 2016, making it the first dredging vessel that will be equipped with dual fuel engines, in addition to DEME's other trailing suction hopper dredger Scheldt River that will be built and put into service around the same time.

Type Approval for Uprated MAN L51/60DF

MAN Diesel & Turbo said its dual-fuel MAN L51/60DF engine has passed its Type Approval Test (TAT), which ran from October 17 to 20 at the company’s Augsburg works in Germany, in front of the industry’s main classification societies. The nine-cylinder test engine has an output of 1,150 kW/cylinder at a nominal speed of 500/514 rpm. The MAN L51/60DF engine can be employed both as marine main-engine and auxiliary engine. Augsburg’s testbed no. 20 hosted the test program of a nine-cylinder version of the engine that ran on fuel oil (DMA) and natural gas.

ExxonMobil Offers New Zinc-Free Marine Engine Oil

ExxonMobil introduced Mobilgard 410 NC, touted by the oil company as a zinc-free high-performance oil that offers marine operators an improvement in piston cleanliness (up to 20%), a reduction in liner wear (up to 50%), and a significant enhancement in bearing protection.

Rolls-Royce Bags 15 Engine Order in Norway

Rolls-Royce said it has signed a deal to supply 15 gas engines to Norwegian Ferry Company, Torghatten Nord AS. The engines will power five Multi Maritime designed LNG ferries operating between Bergen and Stord. Kjell Harloff, Rolls-Royce, Vice President, Engines – Marine, said, “Since the introduction of our first marine gas engines 10 years ago, Rolls-Royce has delivered more than 700 gas engines on land and at sea accumulating over 25 million running hours of operating experience. MAN Diesel & Turbo has signed a contract with Sembcorp Marine in Singapore to supply the dual-fuel propulsion system – including exhaust-gas after-treatment – for a New Semi-submersible Crane Vessel (NSCV) for Heerema Offshore Services. Man's High Speed Engines with Latest Technology

MAN is presenting the D2868 LE421 and LE422, a fully classifiable marine diesel engine for medium and heavy duty applications. In order to fulfill the emission standards, the high speed engine from Nuremberg, uses the latest Common Rail technology. The D2868 is MAN’s first Common Rail 8 cylinder engine for medium and heavy duty applications.
