IACS Launches New Piping Recommendation

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has launched a new recommendation, 177, to enhance the quality of machinery piping systems in shipbuilding.Piping systems convey different fluids at various temperatures and pressures to all parts of the ship, including to nearly every enclosed space on a vessel. Freeport Gets US OK to Begin Steps to Restart LNG Plant

Freeport LNG, the second-biggest U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporter, got approval from federal regulators on Thursday to take early steps to restart its fire-idled LNG export plant in Texas.Freeport, however, has not yet sought permission to restart the liquefaction trains that turn natural gas into LNG for export. Singapore-based shipbuilder Sembcorp Marine has delivered Deepwater Titan, the world’s second 8th-generation drillship, to Transocean subsidiary Triton Titan GmBH.Deepwater Titan is the second of two new 8th-generation drillships constructed by Sembcorp Marine based on the group’s Jurong Espadon 3T design. The dual-derrick drillship is the first-ever unit delivered with two 20,000-psi blowout preventers (BOPs), well-control, riser and piping systems for high-pressure and high-temperature drilling and completion operations.

Geogas' New LPG Carriers Are ‘Ammonia Prepared’

Bureau Veritas Publishes Guidance on Ammonia as Marine Fuel

Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) has released an Ammonia-Prepared notation and has developed a Rule Note for ammonia as a marine fuel as more industry players continue to show interest in the cleaner-burning fuel on the path to shipping decarbonization.The Ammonia-Prepared notation, developed in collaboration with different stakeholders including ship owners, equipment makers, designers and shipyards, is applicable to newbuilds and certifies that a ship has been designed and constructed to be converted to use ammonia as fuel at a later date.

NTSB Finds Complacency, Lack of Procedural Compliance in Recent Marine Accidents

A lack of procedural compliance and complacency were key factors in several marine accident investigations concluded so far in 2021, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).The agency said it determined the probable cause of the flooding of the towing vessel Alton St. Amant on May 17, 2020, in Harvey Canal, New Orleans, Louisiana, was the absence of shipyard pre-inspection and monitoring procedures for water transfer, which resulted in potable water tanks

DNV GL has presented Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) with a general approval for ship application (GASA) for a new concept of very large crude carriers (VLCCs) with a centreline oil-tight longitudinal bulkhead. The new design will reduce potential damage and operational risk by featuring a simpler structural arrangement, loading patterns and piping arrangements. Alaska Marine Lines Upgrading Its Rail Barges

Alaska Marine Lines says four of its rail barges will receive new piping and ballast systems designed by Glosten with installation by Meridian Marine Industries."The rail barges are hitting 20 years of service and were in need of some upgrades," explains John Maketa, T-115 Port Engineer in Seattle. "These barges are the backbone of our rail operations and Central Alaska service. ASCO Completes Irgiz Overhaul

Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO) announced that its towing and supply vessel Irgiz, belonging to the Caspian Sea Oil Fleet, has been accomplished major overhaul. The vessel was repaired at the “Bibiheybat” Ship Repair Yard.The main and auxiliary steering gears and engines, oil and water coolers, air cylinder fittings, pumps for various purposes, separators, and piping systems were repaired. Also, the necessary electrical equipment, main and emergency lighting were checked and repaired.The parts under the floor In the machine-boiler and auxiliary steering gear compartments were cleaned and washed, the mechanisms and the tank with drinking water were cleaned and painted.The necessary repair works were carried out in the living rooms

(DSIC) and MAN Energy Solutions for an ammonia-fuelled 23,000 TEU Ultra-Large Container Ship (ULCS) concept design, the first ammonia as fuel design of its kind in China.LR facilitated hazard identification (HAZID) workshops to determine potential hazards throughout the design phase, covering areas limited to the ammonia-fueled engine and the external piping systems.

OOS Walcheren Starts its Engines

Netherlands-based OOS International has revved up the engines on its newbuild semi-submersible heavy lift crane accommodation vessel OOS Walcheren for the first time.The OOS Walcheren is currently under construction at China Merchants Heavy Industries (Jiangsu) Shipyard, said a press note from the Dutch offshore company .The OOS Walcheren is the sister vessel of the OOS Serooskerke, which is presently undergoing the final stages of commissioning before heading out for sea trials. Her expected delivery is within Q1 2020.The construction of OOS Walcheren commenced on the 24th May 2018 and it has taken 16 ½ months to start up her engines, which has bettered the OOS Serooskerke record by 10 days and less man-hours.

ASCO Completes Overhaul of Shirvan-3

Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO) has completed the overhaul of the crane vessel Shirvan-3 of the Caspian Sea Oil Fleet. The overhaul was carried out at “Bibi-Heybat” Shipyard.The ropes with a lifting capacity of 100 tons were replaced during the overhaul of the vessel. Besides, the routine maintenance of the main and auxiliary engines, pumps, piping systems, sanitary facilities and electric motors was performed.During the dock repair of the ship “Shirvan-3”, damaged underwater and surface sections of the hull were replaced, painting work was completed. Along with this, the propulsion and steering complex, ground-side reinforcement, and tread installation were repaired.“Shirvan-3” has been lifted on the dock to replace the damaged underwater and surface sections of the hull.
