Online Tool to Help Manage Fuel Costs

We4Sea, a company focused on increasing the fuel efficiency and lower the emissions of seagoing ships, released an update of its online software platform. "The update is a next step in their mission to provide shipowners and ship charterers with improved analysis tools, and replace outdated noon-reports as the main source of management information," it said. Teekay LNG taps Start Up for Fleet Optimization

Teekay LNG Partners L.P. signed a full fleet partnership with the New York-based startup, Nautilus Labs, to enhance the efficiency of its gas vessels. The Future: Autonomous Robotic Hull Grooming

Ship hull biofouling has significant impacts on fleet readiness, ship performance, cost, and the environment. Biofouling results in increased hydrodynamic drag which results in greater fuel use and greater emissions per distance traveled than a hydraulically-smooth hull. A study by Schultz, et al. found the typical fouling rating (FR) of a US Navy DDG-51 class vessel, FR-30, increases fuel consumption by 10.3% over a hydraulically-smooth DDG-51. Wartsila Bags Energy Storage Contract from ContourGlobal

Wartsila has won a 6 MW energy storage project contract for the Caribbean island of Bonaire from ContourGlobal Bonaire, a subsidiary of London based ContourGlobal.The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) hybrid energy project includes both the hardware, consisting of batteries and inverters, as well as GEMS, the energy management software from Greensmith Energy, a Wartsila company."The energy storage system will enable Bonaire, part of the Netherlands Antilles, to increase its use of renewable energy such as wind and solar.

ABB Launches Emissions Monitoring Module

A new development from ABB will enable customers to monitor emissions according to the EU’s Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) regulation requirements, which come into effect January 1, 2018. ABB’s MRV module has been certified by the independent certifier Verifavia, as a tool to monitor all parameters to comply with the EU’s MRV regulation requirements. The system follows requirements set out in Regulation (EU) N° 2015/757, the associated Delegated and Implementing Acts and the ISO IEC 25051 standard on software.

Xeneta: No Silver Lining for Container Shipping in Brexit Storm

Xeneta, a  global benchmarking and market intelligence platform for containerized ocean freight, believes that the UK’s decision to leave the European Union will impact negatively on all parties involved in the container shipping segment – from shippers, to freight forwarders and the container carriers themselves.
