Kongsberg Maritime to Equip Four Tanker Newbuilds in Transpetro’s Fleet

Petrobras Signs $521M Contracts for Gas Carriers, Barges and Pushers

Brazilian state-run oil firm Petrobras and its logistics subsidiary Transpetro on Tuesday signed contracts with shipyards for five gas carriers, as well as 18 barges and 18 pushers, for 2.8 billion reais ($520.82 million).The companies made the deal official at an event in Brazil's southern Rio Grande do Sul state. Petrobras and Transpetro Invest in Gas Carries, Inland Vessels

On January 20, Brazil President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will sign contracts for the construction of vessels for the Mar Aberto Program, an initiative aimed at renewing and expanding the Petrobras fleet.Petrobras and Transpetro are contracting five gas carrier ships, in addition to 18 barges and 18 pushboats, in a total investment of R$ 2.8 billion, with the potential to generate more than 9,000 direct and indirect jobs.All vessels will be operated by Transpetro and built in shipyards in three states.

Kongsberg Maritime to Equip Tsakos Group's Shuttle Tanker Newbuilds

Kongsberg Maritime has signed a contract with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to supply integrated technology packages for nine new Dynamic Positioning (DP) Shuttle Tankers, being built for Greek shipowner Tsakos Group.The vessels will be a bare-boat charter by Brazilian energy logistics company Transpetro, supporting offshore operations in Brazil’s pre-salt oil fields.Construction of the vessels will take place at SHI’s shipyard in South Korea, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2027.

Brunvoll Signs Contract for 45 Thruster Order

Brunvoll has signed a contract with Samsung Heavy Industries for the delivery of comprehensive thruster and control system packages for nine DP2 shuttle tankers. The order includes a total of 45 thrusters, making it the largest contract in Brunvoll’s history in terms of both scope and value. The vessels, owned by Tsakos Energy Navigation Ltd., will be placed on long-term bareboat charter to Transpetro, a logistics subsidiary of Petrobras.Brunvoll’s delivery for each vessel consists of three retractable azimuth thrusters, and two tunnel thrusters.

The new contracts include a luxury polar expedition cruise vessel for a return customer, PONANT. The vessel is the first electric hybrid cruise icebreaker with dual fuel propulsion, featuring high-capacity batteries and LNG storage on board. Brazil to Stop Beaching Ships in South Asia

Brazilian authorities plan to implement legislation to help prevent that vessels owned by exporters such as Petrobras and Vale wind up on South Asia's beaching yards, Bloomberg reported. The report said that earlier this month, authorities decided to develop a legal framework to ensure former Brazilian ships don’t end up with recyclers notorious for using dirty and dangerous methods, federal environmental watchdog Ibama said by email. Brazilian companies could face fines of as much as 10 million reais ($3.2 million) if Ibama finds they violate international standards by letting their vessels end up in substandard shipbreaking facilities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Brazil Criticized for Dumping Toxic Ships in South Asia

NGOs and trade unions in Brazil have criticized the state-run Petrobras’ end-of-life fleet management by dumping toxic ships on South Asian beaches. The Brazilian Confederação Nacional dos Trabalhadores em Transportes Aquaviários e Aéreos, na Pesca e nos Portos (CONTTMAF) trade union federation and its member SINDMAR (Sindicato Nacional dos Oficiais da Marinha Mercante) have recently criticized the shipbreaking practices of Transpetro, the oil and gas transportation subsidiary of the Brazilian petroleum corporation Petrobras, majority-owned by the State. In the last five years, more than twenty vessels owned by the oil and gas giant have been dismantled on the beaches of India and Pakistan, where shipbreaking activities endanger both workers and the environment.
