USCG Talks Tough - Ship Detentions
In their recent published Annual Report 2014 Top US Coast Guard official says there will be no let-up in the battle to end ship-sourced waste-oil pollution and ISM Code deficiencies, with even tougher inspection procedures on the way. The safety performance of ships calling at US ports appears to be deteriorating, according to the latest figures, but the US Coast Guard (USCG) says it is because its inspectors and inspections are getting better.
Felixstowe Port Goes Green
The Port of Felixstowe is creating an environmental corridor as part of the Go Green campaign launched by Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) and a number of other global port operators. The initiative at Felixstowe will include the refurbishment of part of a system of dykes within the port. The work will include the improvement of habitats for wildlife as well as enhancing green areas within a busy industrial complex by planting a mixture of trees, grasses and wild flowers.
USCG Offload Drugs worth $ 11 mln
Crewmembers of Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Florida, offloaded 254 kilograms of cocaine and 3,662 pounds of marijuana interdicted in the Caribbean Sea as part of Operation Martillo worth an estimated wholesale value of $11.8 million, at Base Miami Beach, Friday. On Sept. 3, a maritime patrol aircraft reported a suspicious Panamanian flagged sailing vessel southeast of Nicaragua. Coast Guard Cutter Robert Yered arrived on scene and attempted to contact the vessel.
Chile Earthquake - Ports Status
Chile's government has declared a state of emergency in the central region struck by Wednesday's earthquake, the biggest to hit the country since 2010 and the most powerful in the world this year. The 8.3-magnitude tremor struck off the coast of Coquimbo, 46km west of Illapel, at 19:54 local time (22:54 GMT) on Wednesday evening. Tsunami waves hit the coast at Coquimbo and further out from the epicentre, with waves half a metre higher than usual as far north as La Punta.
All Set for Hong Kong - Macau Yacht Races
Yacht races between Hong Kong and Macau will take place on 26 September (Saturday) and 28 September 2015 (Monday). About 25 sailing boats are expected to participate in the races. General Dynamics Wins USN Submarine Deal
The U.S. Navy has awarded a $321.7 million contract option to General Dynamics Electric Boat to provide planning yard work, engineering and technical support for nuclear submarines. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. Under this option, Electric Boat will provide design, engineering, material and logistics support, and research and development activities for active U.S. submarines and submersibles.
One Migrant Child Dead, 13 Missing Off Greek Island
A girl believed to be five years old died and as many as 13 migrants may be missing at sea off the Greek island of Lesbos on Saturday, the Greek coastguard said. Nikos Lagkadianos, a coastguard spokesman, said 11 people were rescued from the sea between Lesbos and Turkey and one swam ashore in the early hours. The survivors said they thought 13 of their number were missing. The girl was found unconscious and was declared dead later at hospital, Lagkadianos said.
