U.S. Coast Guard Hosts Spill Seminar
The U.S. Coast Guard hosted the 2013 Spill of National Significance Executive Seminar at its headquarters Monday. As a follow up and identified best practice to the 2012 Spill of National Significance (SONS) Executive Seminar, the Coast Guard hosted the 2013 Executive Seminar to explore national level policy issues associated with Arctic spill response and to exercise national-level coordination of Senior Officials during an Arctic SONS.
MacGregor Heavy-lift Electric Cranes Ordered for Nordana MPVs
MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has won a contract to deliver four 250-metric-ton heavy-lift electric cranes to two 12,000 dwt multipurpose vessels (MPVs) for a Danish operator Nordana. As part of a fleet refurbishment plan, the long-established Danish operator, Nordana, ordered four heavy-lift versions of MacGregor's variable frequency drive (VFD) electric cranes which are scheduled for delivery during 2014 and 2015.

Seismic Vessel to be Refit at Shipdock Amsterdam
Ship repair and conversion yard Shipdock Amsterdam, part of Damen Shipyards Group, received a contract for the propulsion upgrade of the 3D Seismic Vessel Polarcus Naila. The ultra-modern vessel will arrive at Shipdockin February 2014 for its six-week conversion. In addition to the propulsion upgrade the vessel will also undergo modification works in order to be classified as a Special Purpose Ship.
Liebherr’s 2013 Turnover Steady Despite Weak Economic Climate
The overall economic situation did not improve in 2013. According to current forecasts, the global economy will grow by just under 3% and global production probably by 3.1%. In this year the volume of worldwide trade will, according to World Trade Organization (WTO) forecasts, increase by 2.5%. In view of only moderate overall economic development this year, the Liebherr Group expects its total turnover to reach €9.1 billion, which equals the previous year’s figure.
Seacurus: Seafarers Should be Protected Against Risk of Unpaid Wages
Specialist marine insurance intermediary Seacurus says that reported doubts about the insurance industry’s ability to insure the liability for unpaid wages of abandoned seafarers under the Maritime Labor Convention 2006 are inaccurate and ill-founded. It is already an agreed principle under MLC 2006, which came into force in August 2013, that liability for the unpaid wages of seafarers currently falls to the recruitment and placement services which help seafarers find employment at sea.

The 189-room five-star floating hotel Sunborn Gibraltar is due to welcome its first guests in February 2014, after Gibraltar shipyard Gibdock drew on its extensive cruise ship expertise to undertake hull blasting and coating work. Despite its role as a tourist and business travel destination Gibraltar does not have a five-star hotel. The 142m long, seven deck Sunborn Gibraltar resembles a sophisticated high-end cruise ship or mega yacht.
