Horizon Lines To Expand Gulf Service
Horizon Lines announced that it will expand its Gulf service to offer shippers a Tuesday sailing every other week from Jacksonville to San Juan. Adding the Jacksonville call also creates a high-speed, over-the-weekend marine option through Houston for cargo bound for southeastern destinations along the Eastern Seaboard. The company's weekly Thursday service departing Jacksonville for Puerto Rico remains unchanged.
Thales Awarded Royal Navy Services Contract
Thales U.K. signed a 10-year contract with the Ministry of Defense (MOD), worth up to £600 million, for the in-service support of the Royal Navy’s major sensor systems. The new Sensors Support Optimization Project (SSOP) builds on the Thales’s Contractor Logistics Support contract, originally signed in 2003, which has provided support to the Royal Navy’s sonar and electronic warfare systems for the past 10 years.
Fire aboard Royal Caribbean Liner Cancels Voyage
Fire broke out aboard Royal Caribbean’s 916-foot cruise liner Grandeur of the Seas at approximately 3 a.m. Monday morning. The vessel, carrying 2,224 passengers and 796 crew en route to CoCo Cay, Bahamas, was roughly 35 nautical miles offshore. The fire was contained to the third deck (of 11) of the 74,000-ton ship, and power, propulsion and communications continue to function without interruption.
ABB Wins $12 Million Diesel Electric System Order

Vestdavit has won its first contract with the U.S. Coast Guard. After an extensive tender process with many contenders, Vestdavit was chosen to supply nine PLA-2000 davits, the company said. Rapid Underwater Bow Thruster Removal Avoids Drydocking
A Hydrex diver/technician team mobilized to Tacoma, Washington, U.S. last month to remove the bow thruster of a 294-meter container vessel. The unit needed to be overhauled. Hydrex performed the operation underwater in a very short time frame. This made it possible for the owner to keep his vessel out of drydock. Aberdeen-based Hydro Group Plc. a global design and manufacturer of underwater cables and connectors for subsea, underwater, topside and onshore applications, invested £300,000 into research and development in 2012 and has developed the 36kV Dry Mate Hydro Bond Renewable Connector (HRC). The reduced installation time means the 36kV Dry Mate HRC is a lower risk, more cost effective and safer option, due to the reduction in offshore-man hours, the manufacturer claims.
