Yanmar Rolls Out New Marine Power Offerings
Yanmar has already introduced several new products for the marine market in 2018, including a new common rail inboard marine diesel engine touted as the world's smallest, higher horsepower offerings in its mid range series, and expanded joystick controls. Yanmar Marine International has launched the latest addition to its family of new generation common rail (CR) diesel engines, the compact Yanmar 3JH40 inboard engine, at boot Düsseldorf. The three-cylinder 3JH40 has been developed as the marine industry’s smallest CR inboard diesel engine, Yanmar said.
Fairbanks Morse to Power US Navy's LPD 29
Fairbanks Morse said it has been awarded a contract to build and deliver the main propulsion diesel engines (MPDE) that will power LPD 29, the U.S. Navy’s thirteenth San Antonio landing platform dock (LPD) class ship. Construction of the engines will begin in 2019 for scheduled delivery to Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Miss. in 2020. Hybrid Patrol Boat Launched at Port of Rotterdam
A new hybrid patrol vessel has entered into service last week at the Port of Rotterdam. The new 25-meter vessel, the RPA 8, can run on both diesel and diesel-electric, and causes less vessel wake and is much more efficient than other Port Authority vessels. RPA 8 was built by Kooiman Group in Zwijndrecht to replace the RPA 3, which had reached the end of its technical and economic service life. RPA 8 uses considerably less fuel, while the hybrid propulsion system enables efficient patrolling at low speeds and reduces the number of hours the diesel engines need to run at low load operation.
Dive Support Vessel Delivered to Stapem Offshore
The first of two new 18-meter catamaran dive support vessels built for Paris-based Stapem Offshore has been delivered by South African shipbuilder Legacy Marine Group. The Marshal Island-flagged vessel, Stapem Beluga, will operate in the coastal waters of Angola in support of oil and gas exploration and production. The vessel, designed by Incat Crowther, has been customized to suit Stapem’s specific operational requirements. The aft exterior deck utilizes available space by combining deck lockers and racks for diving equipment storage with a covered dive prepping area.
Diesel Engines for China Market – Majors Set Up New Company
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Shanghai Diesel Engine Co., Ltd. (SDEC), a major Chinese diesel engine manufacturer, have signed an agreement to establish Shanghai MHI Engine Co., Ltd., to manufacture and market diesel engines in China. The aim of the new joint venture is to make a full-fledged entrance into the rapidly expanding Chinese market for industrial-use diesel engines and to build up market share through more competitively priced products. The JV is scheduled to begin manufacturing and marketing in December of this year.

News: New Marine Diesel Regs Adopted by EPA
Last month the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it is adopting emission standards for new marine diesel engines that will be installed on vessels flagged or registered in the U.S. The near-term, Tier 1 standards in this rule are equivalent to the internationally negotiated emission limits for oxides of nitrogen (NOx). These standards will go into effect in 2004 and are based on readily available emission-control technology. EPA also said that it would undertake another rulemaking in a few years to consider a second tier of more stringent standards. The Tier 1 standards apply to marine diesel engines manufactured January 1, 2004 or later if they will be installed on vessels flagged or registered in the United States1.

Lubrizol and Caterpillar Codeveloping Low-Emission Diesel Fuel
The Lubrizol Corporation and Caterpillar Inc. are developing a low-emission diesel fuel designed for use in commercial service diesel engines. This unique fuel technology utilizes Lubrizol's performance chemistry and system capabilities and Caterpillar's diesel engine combustion and emissions knowledge. The new fuel will be sold by fuel marketers and distributors and supported by fully integrated chemical, electronic and mechanical components sold by Lubrizol under the name PuriNOx Performance Systems. PuriNOx fuel is a stable blend of additives, water and commercial diesel fuel. Tests indicate, when compared to commercial diesel fuel, PuriNOx fuel significantly reduces two of the most critical emissions from compression ignition diesel engines - nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulates.

GE Receives BV Certification
GE Transportation’s marine business has received type approval certification from Bureau Veritas (BV), Paris, France, for its family of Electronic Fuel Injected (EFI), medium-speed diesel engines. “The BV type approval certifies that our 8, 12 and 16 cylinder engines are manufactured with high quality at GE’s Grove City, Pennsylvania facility,” said John Manison, manager of GE Transportation’s marine business in Erie, Pa. “Over the past several years, we have earned BV, American Bureau of Shipping and Germanischer Lloyd type approvals for our diesel engine family. Couple these quality certifications with many cost-saving features such as electronic fuel injection, and customers are offered significant benefits when using our engines,” Manison added.
Dutch Inland Waterway Aid Could Drive Repowers
The European Commission authorized a Dutch aid scheme on the basis of which subsidies can be granted for the replacement or retrofitting of diesel engines used by inland waterways vessels. The scheme will be in force for five years with a total budget of approximately € 20 million. The aim of the scheme is to achieve a substantial reduction in the NOx’s emissions of the existing inland waterways fleet in the Netherlands by subsidising low-emission diesel engines. retrofitting a current conventional ship's diesel engine into a low-emission one. The scheme will benefit vessels registered in the Netherlands irrespective of nationality. The Commission considers the scheme to be in line with the EC Treaty, in particular with the Guidelines on State aid for environmental protection.
Wärtsilä Extends Licence Agreement in China
Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd and Yichang Marine Diesel Engine Plant (YMD) of Yichang, China, jointly signed an agreement in January 2007 to extend the existing licence agreement for the manufacture and sale of Wärtsilä low-speed marine diesel engines. The new agreement enables YMD to deliver also certain types of low-speed engines designed and developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, Japan. GE Marine Engines Extends MSS Agreement with MTU
GE Marine Engines announced it has extended its Marine System Supplier (MSS) agreement with MTU Friedrichshafen (MTU), covering MTU's packaging and distribution of GE LM marine aeroderivative gas turbines. "Our successful MSS agreement with MTU dates back to the 1970s," said Karl Matson, general manager of GE Marine Engines. "This relationship has made it possible for our LM1600, LM2500 and LM2500+ gas turbines to be used alone or in combination with MTU diesel engines from their full line of diesel engines. GE LM gas turbines cover the power range from 4,500 kilowatts (kW) to 42,700 kW. To date, MTU has packaged several GE LM gas turbines for commercial fast ferries and military vessels.
New Pilot Boat Delivered to Alabama Pilots
The Alabama Pilot, Inc. in Mobile, Ala., has taken delivery of Dixey, a newly built Chesapeake Class pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation. With length overall of 53.6’, beam of 17.8’, and draft of 4.8’, the all-aluminum pilot boat features the C. Raymond Hunt-designed Deep-V hull. It is powered by twin Caterpillar C-18 diesel engines, each delivering 671Bhp at 2100 rpm and a top speed of 27 knots. A Humphree interceptor trim-tab control system was installed at the transom.

The Natural Order
The impact of increasingly stiff rules from legislators regarding ship engine emissions combined with ever increasing demands from ship and boat owners of better life-cycle performance and fuel economy has placed the onus squarely upon the diesel engine manufacturing community to continuously improve products and systems. While the diesel engine community has responded in kind with a variety of enhanced designs and concepts, there is a revolution spurred by evolution brewing in academia which promises to, at the very least, arm diesel engine makers with a system to quickly and cost effectively optimize current diesel engine performance, and to possibly even help to reshape the diesel engine's inner and outer appearance in the name of improving performance.
$2.7M EPA Grant to Replace Tug Engines
EPA Invests $2.7 Million to Reduce Air Pollution from Old Diesel Engines in New York and New Jersey. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has provided a total of $2.7 million to help two organizations reduce air pollution in the New York metropolitan area by replacing old, dirty diesel engines on a tug boat and two trains with less polluting models. The projects will cut emissions of harmful nitrogen oxides by 70 tons per year and particulate matter by three tons per year. These pollutants are linked to health problems, including asthma, lung and heart disease and even premature death. Diesel engines are durable and often remain in use a long time. Older diesels that predate current and stricter air pollution standards emit large amounts of air pollutants.
MHI to License MET Turbocharger Production To STX Metal
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and STX Metal Co., Ltd., a marine diesel engine manufacturer in Korea, have signed an agreement under which MHI will license production and marketing of its MET Turbocharger*, a supercharger for marine diesel engines, to the Korean firm. Report: Clean Diesel Power Key to Industry’s Success
Diesel powers the American economy — including almost the entire commercial maritime fleet. This is the conclusion of an extensive study conducted by Charles River Associates and released by the Washington-based Diesel Technology Forum. In addition to cargo ships, tankers, tugs, and towboats, diesel powers 94 percent of all freight shipments, 85 percent of all public transit buses, two-thirds of all farm equipment, and all heavy construction equipment. Forum representatives brought this message to the Conference on Marine Vessels and Air Quality recently held in San Francisco. "Now, for the first time, we have a well documented and quantitative report, that defines diesel’s critical role in the economic fabric of the nation and in the commercial marine industry in particular.
