The global downturn in offshore energy is well recorded, a downturn which has had impact on various arms of the energy and marine supply chain. While Goltens has felt the downturn like many other companies, it is reporting 'cautious optimism' in the Middle East premised on new international regulation and the need for shipowners to upgrade ships.Almost all the offshore vessels in Dubai are operating, and many have come in from Asia to do the same, but following the offshore crash in 2016, operators are delaying maintenance.

Goltens’ Worldwide Green Technologies Division Asia announced contracts with NYK Bulk & Projects Carrier Ltd. (NBP) and BW LPG for support in retrofitting a total of 37 vessels with ballast water treatment systems (BWT).The NBP order is for 25 bulk carriers. NBP is a subsidiary of NYK. Goltens scope on the project includes 3D laser scanning and modeling of BWT systems, delivery of detailed design packages, and installation supervision in the shipyard.BW LPG awarded orders for the same scope of work for the retrofitting of 12 of its LPG carriers.

Optimarin signed a contract to supply seven of its USCG-approved Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) to Fednav, Canada's largest ocean-going dry-bulk shipowning and chartering group. Five of the units will be fitted on existing vessels within the 63-strong Fednav fleet, with two deliveries set for newbuilds. Optimarin received an order for 10 retrofitted Ballast Water Management Systems from Höegh Autoliners.The contract follows previous individual orders over the past two years, with the USCG approved, UV-based technology now set to be on-board 15 ships within the firm’s advanced RoRo fleet.The order follows less than a month after the Norwegian-headquartered supplier signed one of its biggest contracts to date, for the delivery of 36 systems to Ardmore Shipping. Optimarin has now sold well over 650 systems, with more than 500 installed and operational.

The shipyard has delivered in excess of 800 marine and offshore projects to date, of which 20% is made up of LNG carrier repairs. In comparison to the first half of 2017, the year 2018 has a marked increase in volume about 25% in terms of repairs and other works.

Positive developments in the ballast water treatment (BWT) are reflected by a recent surge in new business orders and revenues, says BWT specialist Optimarin.The Norwegian headquartered firm, which has now sold close to 600 of its USCG-approved Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS), says it has shattered its initial growth forecasts for the year to date, with both orders and income up by over 50 percent year-on-year.“2017 was our best ever year in business, so we honestly didn’t expect to outperform last year’s figures so comprehensively,” states Optimarin CEO Tore Andersen.

Several senior staff members have stepped up in the latest round of promotions at Goltens Worldwide. Goltens appointed Pravin Kirolikar to the position of Managing Director of Goltens Dubai. Kirolikar makes the move from Goltens India, where he served as Managing Director for eight years. Starting his career as a professional marine engineer, Kirolikar sailed for 13 years before going ashore to work as a marine surveyor for the Indian Register of Shipping.
