Bollinger Delivers ATB for Bouchard

Bouchard Coastwise Management Co., Hicksville, NY, has added to its fleet a double-hull articulated ocean-going tug/barge units (ATB) with the delivery from Bollinger Shipyards, Inc., Lockport, La., of the 130-ft. tug Jane A. Bouchard and the 430-ft., 110,000 barrel (BBL) class double-hull oil Barge B. No. 225 that meets the requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA '90). The Jane A. Bouchard and Barge B. No. 225 is the first of a two ATB contract between Bouchard and Bollinger. The second, planned for delivery in May 2004, will be the sister ship, Morton S. Bouchard IV and a larger, 487-ft. barge B. USCG Authorizes Construction of Two Buoy Tenders

The USCG announced Marinette Marine Corporation (MMC) of Marinette, Wis., has been awarded contract options, valued at approximately $60 million, for the construction of two 225-ft. Juniper "B" Class seagoing buoy tenders. The two new buoy tenders, scheduled for delivery in 2001 and 2002, will be named Aspen and Sycamore in honor of retired buoy tenders.

Maritime Academy to Host Open House

The community is invited to explore the Great Lakes Maritime Academy at Northwestern Michigan College at an Open House on Saturday, October 19, 2002 from 11 am to 2 pm. The Academy is located on East Front Street at Barlow Avenue (next to the Holiday Inn) in Traverse City. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the academy's new 225 ft.training ship State of Michigan.

Thrane & Thrane Acquires EuroCom Industries

EMG EuroMarine Electronics GmbH sold its 88.6-percent stake in ECI EuroCom Industries A/S, Ålborg, Denmark to Denmark’s Thrane & Thrane A/S for approximately EUR 14 million. EuroCom Industries is among the leading suppliers of marine telecommunication electronics. With its workforce of 225, it generated in 2003 sales of EUR 47.5 million and, after the successful turnaround in 2003, an EBIT of EUR 4.6 million. By acquiring the majority stake in EuroCom Industries, Thrane & Thrane rounds off its portfolio of maritime communication products.

Odfjell Sells Two Ships

As part of Odfjell's continued fleet renewal process, two older ships have been sold. OWL Trader (12 450 dwt./built 1982) was delivered to her new owners 28 March 2007. We have also entered into an agreement to sell Bow Lady (32 225 dwt./built 1978) and expected time of delivery to new owners is medio April. These transactions give a total gain of about $3m for the Odfjell group, which will be accounted for in the second quarter of 2007.

Manitowoc Acquires Marinette

The Manitowoc Company, Inc. has finalized its previously announced agreement to purchase Marinette Marine Corporation. Marinette was acquired for approximately $48 million in an all-cash transaction financed through Manitowoc's existing credit facility. Located in Marinette, Wisconsin, just across Green Bay from Manitowoc's Bay Shipbuilding facility, Marinette Marine operates one of the largest shipyards on the U.S. Great Lakes. The acquisition is expected to add 10 cents to Manitowoc's 2001 earnings. "We are delighted that Marinette Marine is now part of The Manitowoc Company and we want to welcome their employees and families to our family," stated Terry D. Growcock, Manitowoc's president and chief executive officer.

Marine Debris Removed from Remote Hawaiian Islands

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA, and the University of Hawaii's Sea Grant Program have just returned from a joint mission to remove thousands of pounds of deadly marine debris from the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. The Coast Guard Cutter Walnut, a 225-ft. buoy tender home ported in Honolulu, departed on Aug. 22 for a 1,000 mile trip to the remote islands of Pearl and Hermes Atoll. Their goal was to remove as much lethal marine debris as possible. Walnut's crew removed 21,110 pounds of fishing net and other marine trash from more than 60 sites across the atoll using the ship's crane, lift bags, divers and just plain elbow grease. The Kukui, another 225-ft. Coast Guard cutter from Honolulu, joined the debris recovery effort on Sept.

Bollinger Contracted to Build Two for Bouchard

Bouchard’s B.No. 225, sister hull to the announced newbuilds, B. No. 280 and B.No. 205, travels down the Mississippi River on her maiden voyage following delivery from Bollinger. Bollinger Shipyards, Inc. of Lockport, Louisiana and Bouchard Coastwise Management, Corp., Hicksville, N.Y., one of the largest operators of double hull articulated tug/barge (ATB) units in the United States, signed a contract for Bollinger to build two double-hull, ocean-going barges that meet the requirements of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA’90). These two additions will give Bouchard fourteen OPA’90 barges in their fleet. This addition to the Bollinger yards portfolio, will bring the delivered OPA’90 barge count to thirty-three when both units are delivered.

USCG Launches Another Cutter

Charleston’s newest Coast Guard Cutter, Oak, a 225-ft Juniper Class seagoing buoy tender was launched Saturday in Marinette, Wis. Although the launching ceremony is a milestone in the birth of Oak, the cutter still has to undergo extensive work before Oak heads to its new homeport of Charleston, S.C. sometime in late fall of 2002. U.S. Representative Henry Brown of South Carolina is scheduled to be the keynote speaker for the launch ceremony. Representative Brown’s wife, Billye Brown, the ship’s sponsor, and Coast Guard Seventh District Commander Rear Adm. Jay Carmichael are also scheduled to attend the launch ceremony. Oak will replace the ageing Coast Guard Cutter Madrona, which has been in service since 1943.

Port Huron Welcomes New Cutter

The City of Port Huron will welcome the newest ship in the Coast Guard’s fleet of buoy tenders at 3 p.m. Saturday November 8. The Coast Guard Cutter Hollyhock (WLB 214) is the fourteenth Juniper Class Seagoing Buoy Tender and is the first of its kind to be stationed on the Great Lakes. Hollyhock replaces the Coast Guard Cutter Bramble, now a museum ship in Port Huron. The newest 225-foot cutter was launched January 25, 2003 in Marinette, Wis., and turned over for Coast Guard operation Oct. 15.

Coast Guard Medevacs Patient from Tanker

A Coast Guard aircrew medevaced a 55-year-old-man from a foreign-flagged tanker ship transiting 225 miles southeast of Nantucket Tuesday night after the vessel's captain reported the man was suffering from cardiac complications. A Jayhawk rescue helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cod arrived on scene shortly after 9 p.m. and hoisted 55-year-old Flavio Simonini from the motor tanker Venice, a 768-foot petroleum oil tanker from Malta. The Jayhawk aircrew, including a Coast Guard flight surgeon, took Simonini, in stable condition, to Hyannis Airport for further transport to Cape Cod Hospital. Simonini's current condition is not known.

Donjon Marine Participates in FiFi Exercise

Donjon Marine Co., Inc. was invited by the State Fire Marshall and the Director of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety to participate in an exercise conducted by members of the Union and Morris County Fire Services to test and showcase the capabilities of a portable marine firefighting system known as Neptune/Iron Man. On May 26, at Donjon’s Berth 22 Port Newark Facility, Donjon loaded the Neptune/Iron Man firefighting system onto Donjon’s newly built 225 x 54 x 14-ft. deck barge, the Witte 254, along with necessary support equipment including a forklift, rigging, and matting to move the gear during the exercise. On May 27, Donjon’s tug Atlantic Salvor took the Witte 254 and associated gear into Newark Bay where the fire-fighting system was tested successfully.

Carnival to Build and Operate Cruise Terminal in Honduras

Carnival Corporation & plc has signed an agreement to build and operate a cruise terminal on the island of Roatan, Honduras. Development of the facility - to be called "Mahogany Bay - Roatan" – is expected to start in fall 2007 and be completed by summer 2009 at a cost of $50m. The cruise facility will be situated on 20 acres on the Roatan waterfront and will consist of a two-berth cruise terminal capable of accommodating super post-Panamax vessels and up to 7,000 passengers daily. Partnering with Carnival on the project is Jerry Hynds, a local business leader and a member of the Honduran Congress. He is also the owner of Coral Cay, a resort property located adjacent to the planned port facility. host 225 cruise ship calls and 500,000 passengers annually.

Coast Guard Cutter Cypress Returns Home

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Cypress (WLB 210) returned to their homeport in Mobile, Ala., Monday, returning from a seven-day trip to southern Florida. The crew of the Cypress departed Mobile on the Oct. 25 en route to Key West, Fla., to conduct Hurricane Wilma recovery operations. Cypress’ crew delivered supplies to Sector Key West and serviced thirteen buoys in the Key West Main Channel. After completing her mission in the immediate Key West area, the crew of the Cypress steamed approximately 60 miles west to the Dry Tortugas. There, they conducted a complete survey of all 52 navigational aids in the area and serviced five of them. The Cypress is a 225-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Mobile, and services navigational aids from Apalachicola, Fla. to the U.S.

Coast Guard Contributes Material for Artificial Reef

The Coast Guard, in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), is scheduled to deploy worn buoy sinkers to an artificial reef off the coast of New Jersey on Saturday. The Coast Guard cutter Juniper, a 225-ft. buoy tender homeported in Newport, R.I., will be adding a total of 10 buoy sinkers weighing approximately 16,000 pounds each to the Axel Carlson Reef site located approximately six miles from Shark River Inlet and four miles from Manasquan Inlet. The area of the reef is four square miles and sits at a depth ranging from 66-ft to 80-ft. The concrete sinkers, recently taken out of service by the Coast Guard, will provide a hard substrate for fish, shellfish and crustaceans, fishing grounds for anglers and underwater structures for scuba divers.

Audacia: Innovation at Great Depths

The offshore vessel, the Audacia, is set to sail soon. With a length of 738 ft. (225 m), the Audacia is a deep-sea pipelay vessel that can be qualified as large to gigantic. It is the first vessel that lays out the pipeline over the bow. Two years of conversion preceded its May 8 christening. During that time, Imtech Marine & Offshore among others converted a huge bulk carrier into an advanced offshore vessel: a superb performance in terms of the time it took to complete the project and the application of innovative techniques. Imtech Marine & Offshore received the commission from Allseas, a leader in the installation of offshore oil and gas pipelines. In a partnership with GTI, the complete installation was projected and completed with 300,000 manhours.

MacGregor Signs Order for a Plimsoll Electric Mooring System

Valentine Maritime (Gulf) LLC of Abu Dhabi has ordered a Plimsoll electrically-driven 10-point mooring system from MacGREGOR’s Offshore division – part of the Cargotec Corporation. The equipment will be installed on a subsea pipelaying vessel due for delivery from China’s Nanjing Shipyard in final-quarter 2008. The Plimsoll mooring winches – with 150-ton line pull and 225-ton brake holding ratings – will feature inverter drives and friction clutches for fast engagement and disengagement, and a mechanically-controlled dynamic drag brake for high speed payout of wire rope incorporating an anti-spinning function. The mooring packages will include a load and length monitoring system, deck fairleads and rigging sheaves.

Ferry Mishap Claims Eight Lives

Eight people were killed when a ferry sank in the northern Philippines. Colonel Delfin Bravo, police operations officer in Tuguegarao, said 50 passengers survived by swimming to shore or were saved by rescuers after last Wednesday's accident. Rescuers were still searching for survivors along the Chico river, 360 km (225 miles) north of Manila. Officials said the ferry might have been buffeted by big waves and strong winds due to incessant rains in the northern Philippines over the past few days. Police said the base of the improvised ferry was made up of four boats, which were tied together to carry a wooden platform.

Landing Craft for Waterborne Construction

Breezeswept Bay Dock Works recently took delivery of a Packman 23 ft. landing craft designed and built by the William E. Munson Company, Mt. Vernon, Wash. The vessel wil be used for waterborne construction in the Florida Keys. Power is supplied by a single 225 hp Mercury Optimax outboard providing a 50 knot top speed and 30 knot cruise burning less than nine gph. A 2,500 lb. load capacity and 56 in. wide bow door allow for easy transportation of construction equipment to remote building sites. The large cargo deck and bow door also provide an excellent platform for diving operations. Additional outfitting includes a console T-top with tinted windows…

Salvage Tug Completes Frigate Tows

Donjon Marine's 7,200 hp salvage tug Powhatan deliverd the fourth and final ex-U.S. Navy frigate to the Turkish Governement. Donjon Marine had been contracted last year to tow the frigates ? three in Philadelphia and one in Charleston, S.C. - and deliver them to the Turks in the Sea of Marmara. Each frigate (414 x 44 x 24 ft.) was towed by the company's 225 ft. U.S. flag salvage tug, the largest such salvage tug operating under the U.S. flag. The third frigate was towed across the Atlantic Ocean by Donjon's tug Atlantic Salvor, a 6,480 hp ocean tug.

Farstad Enters Long-Term Charter with Arrendadora

The Mexican offshore service company Arrendadora Ocean Mexicana SA is nominated as winner of a maintenance contract for the oil company Pemex in Mexico. This contract is based on the utilisation of two of Farstad's vessels, and Farstad Shipping ASA will as a consequence enter into a long-term charter with Arrendadora Ocean Mexicana SA for Far Scotia and Far Swift, each for 3.3 years. Total contract value for Fartad Shipping ASA is approx. NOK 225 million, and both vessels will commence operations in August/September. Far Scotia and Far Swift are both platform supply vessels (PSV) of the UT 755 design. Far Scotia will finish a two year contract for ASCO in July, while the newbuild Far Swift will be delivered from the yard (Brevik Construction AS) early in the same month.
