DNV GL Type Approval for XPAND Battery System
U.S. manufacturer of lithium-ion cells and battery systems XALT Energy’s XPAND Battery system has been certified as acceptable for installation on all marine vessels classified by DNV GL. According to a press release from the company, XPAND Battery System has been demonstrated to comply with DNV GL rules for Classification of Ships, Offshore Units, and High Speed and Light Craft, and was therefore granted Type Approval Certificate TAE00002YC. The certification includes XALT Energy’s XMP71P-based systems, including XALT’s Battery Management System (BMS).

Norsafe to Equip Australia's New Polar Research Ship
Norsafe said it has signed a contract with Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding BV to supply IMO Polar Code compliant Life Saving Appliances (LSA) to an arctic supply and research vessel for the Australian Antarctic Division. Norsafe will supply two JYN-85 conventional lifeboats with LH-140 davits and two JYN-115 lifeboats with LH-185 davits to the vessel. This is the second order Norsafe has received for its specialist LSA winning its first Polar Code contract with the British Antarctic Survey Polar Research vessel Sir David Attenborough in November last year.

Singapore Continues to Harmonize LNG Bunkering Standards
To develop the world’s first set of harmonised LNG bunkering standards, a network comprising Antwerp, Rotterdam, Singapore and Zeebrugge, subsequently expanded to include Jacksonville and Norway, was formed. Taking reference from documents by organisations such as the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH), the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and the Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF), this set of harmonised standards will ensure that key areas of the LNG bunkering process are aligned across ports carrying out LNG bunkering operations.
Singapore Plans to Shape Bunkering for World's Future
Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) introduced several new initiatives at SIBCON as part of Singapore’s continued efforts to enhance bunkering processes and prepare the bunkering industry to meet future demands. MPA previously announced the mandatory adoption of MFM for Marine Fuel Oil (MFO) deliveries in the Port of Singapore from 1 January 2017. MPA is on track for implementation with 110 bunker tankers already approved to perform MFO deliveries through MFM in the Port of Singapore.
Norway Approves PBES Lithium Energy Storage
Plan B Energy Storage (PBES) said its marine energy storage system has received approval for use in electric and hybrid vessels in Norway, having met the new Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) standard. The lithium-ion battery manufacturer PBES, who uses the proprietary CellCool cooling and E-Vent ventilation systems, tested its energy storage system at its Trondheim facility on June 17, 2016. The test attempted to force overcharge the batteries into a thermal runaway situation and was prevented by the PBES safety systems.

SGMF Releases First LNG Bunkering Safety Guidelines
The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) released the 1st edition of its LNG Bunkering Safety Guidelines yesterday. The goal of the document is to provide the bunkering industry with best practices in order to ensure that gas-fuelled ships are re-fuelled with high levels of safety, integrity, and reliability, the group said in a press release. The 82-page document was created by a working group featuring employees from the Swedish Marine Authority, Shell, MOL Group, Lloyd's Register, DNVGL, the Norwegian Maritime Authority, Alkane Marine and IAPH.
CAE Gains Approval for BRM and ERM Training
The Norwegian Maritime Authority (Sjøfartsdirektoratet) granted approval to the CAE Oslo training center to conduct Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and Engine Resource Management (ERM) training.
