Island Offshore’s Hybrid OECV Hits Water at Vard Yard in Romania (Video)

Island Offshore’s new hybrid Ocean Energy Construction Vessel (OECV) has been launched to the water at Vard Shipyards Romania in Brăila.The 120-meter vessel, labeled NB 977, is designed to support offshore operations with reduced environmental impact. The vessel, of VARD 3 25 design, will be equipped with a 250-tonne heave-compensated subsea crane, DP2 capability and accommodation for up to 130 personnel.The hybrid-powered vessel will feature a 1.7 MWh energy storage system for hybrid propulsion, a heat recovery system and engine sets prepared for alternative low-emission fuels.

Vard Selects TMC to Equip Prysmian’s Newbuild Cable Laying Vessel

Norwegian ship designer and builder Vard on Friday announced it has signed a contract to construct a cable laying vessel for an undisclosed customer. The value of the contract is between EUR 200 – 250 million.The vessel is designed by Norwegian company Salt Ship Design AS. Vard's shipyard in Tulcea, Romania, on Wednesday held a keel laying ceremony for the Prysmian Group's newest cable laying vessel.The new 171-meter vessel, an identical sister ship to the state-of-the-art Leonardo da Vinci delivered in 2021, is scheduled to start commercial operation in early 2025.According to the Prysmian Group, both the new ship and the Leonardo da Vinci are the only installation vessels in the world with two rotating platforms of 7,000 and 10,000 tons, bringing the total capacity up to 14,000 tons to ensure the highest carousel capacity in the market.

Vard to Design, Build Cable Layer for NCT Offshore

Shipbuilder and designer Vard, part of Fincantieri, said Friday that it had secured a contract to design and build a cable laying vessel for NCT Offshore in Denmark.The VARD 9 01 design vessel is designed by Vard Design in Ålesund, Norway. The hull will be built at Vard Tulcea in Romania, while the final outfitting, commissioning, and delivery will be carried out by one of Vard’s shipyards in Norway. The cable layer, which will be about 95 meters long and have a beam of about 21,5 meters, is scheduled for delivery in Q4 2024.

EMR Group said its International Shipbreaking Ltd (ISL) site in Brownsville, Texas is the first to accept a EU ship to be recycled in the U.S.Using sustainable recycling processes, ISL was able to recycle 97% of the materials removed from MT Wolverine, a 158-meter-long chemical tanker with a carrying capacity of 16,000 tonnes, which prior to being decommissioned, was sailing under the flag of Norway.The project follows a $30 million investment in new equipment and processes at ISL’s Brownsville yard, to meet the requirements of the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (EU SSR).

Shipbuilder VARD announced it has delivered Viking Octantis, the first of two new expedition cruise vessels built for Viking Cruises.The vessel is 205 meters long with a 23.5 meter beam and is ice-strengthened Polar Class 6 for expeditions in the Arctic, Antarctica and North America’s Great Lakes. It features a straight bow, longer hull and state-of-the-art fin stabilizers that allows it to glide over the waves, with u-tank stabilizers to decrease rolling when the ship is stationary, VARD said.
