IHC Merwede Reveals Healthy Profit Margin
IHC Merwede has revealed a healthy net profit margin of 4.1% in 2012 and a positive sales forecast for the year ahead. The company develops and builds vessels, equipment and life-cycle support services for the dredging, mining and offshore industries, which have been performing well – despite the global economic situation and the knock-on effect for the maritime industry. In 2012, IHC Merwede reached a revenue of €895 million and a net profit of €37 million.
MTU Expands in India with Engine Test Cell Facility
The Tognum Group company MTU India opened a new engine test cell facility at its MTU India Service Center in Tathawade, Pune (India). The test cell’s dynamometer system is capable of testing all MTU engines up to Series 4000 engines in the range from 300 to 4,300kW, as per MTU test protocol, and for all applications. In February 2010, MTU India opened its new head office for sales and service operations in Pune.

Life-like Robotic Jellyfish Unveiled
As part of a US Navy-funded project Virginia Tech College of Engineering researchers have unveiled a life-like, autonomous robotic jellyfish. The jellyfish, the size and weight of a grown man, is 5 foot 7 inches in length and wieghs 170 pounds. The project aims to develop self-powering, autonomous machines that support various missions such as surveillance and monitoring the undersea environment, as well as studying ocean life, mapping ocean floors and monitoring ocean currents.

NOL Names Its Largest Container Ship
The 14,000-TEU container ship was named 'APL Temasek' by Mrs Mary Tan, wife of the Republic’s President at a Singapore ceremony. The tunnel boring machine was built by Hitachi Zosen Corporation and loaded at Osaka, Japan. Bulk Carrier Catches Fire, Sinks off Oman
The Liberian-flag bulker 'Atlantik Confidence' reported an engine room fire and sank over the Easter week-end. Rescue of the 21-member Turkish crew was supervised by USS Nicholas which was dispatched from routine NATO Task Force counter-piracy operations in the area. The U.S. warship took command of the rescue operation and sent its helicopter to cover the 80 miles to the vessel to assess the immediate needs.

P&O Introduce Irish Sea Fast Ferry After Overhaul
Ship refurbishment specialists Blu Marine complete the £500,000 contract, and P&O has begun operating the ship on its Troon to Larne service. Blu Marine carried out the work in Belfast Harbour, which mainly involved fitting the P&O Express with a new Club Lounge designed to meet the needs of business travellers. The 90-capacity lounge will offer complimentary news-papers, magazines, drinks and snacks, with facilities in place to allow passengers to use laptops, tablets and mobile phones.
