AMSA officials congratulate captain & crew of a container ship on their rescue of 15 asylum-seekering survivors from a Sunda Strait casualty. The APL Bahrain recovered 15 survivors following the sinking of a passenger vessel on 29 August 2012 off the southern Sunda Strait, including six people who were rescued in the dark. The vessel also acted as on scene coordinator for much of the operation, coordinating up to five merchant ships and aircraft over two days.

Japanese Hydrographer Wins UK Award
Dr Hideo Nishida of the Japan Hydrographic Association wins the UKHO’s annual Alexander Dalrymple Award for his outstanding contribution to hydrography. Dr Nishida has had a long and illustrious career with the Japan Coastguard, the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Japan Hydrographic & Oceanographic Department (JHOD). In particular, his work in reaction to natural disasters, during the tsunami and earthquake that hit Japan on 11 March 2011, was commended.

Newport News Sets Heaviest Module Yet Aboard Aircraft Carrier
Huntington Ingalls Industries' Newport News Shipbuilding places a record 1,026-metric ton unit —aboard aircraft carrier 'Gerald R. Ford' (CVN 78). The modular unit, — roughly the weight of six Boeing 747 commercial airplanes, is one of the nearly 500 total structural lifts needed to complete the ship, of which 435 have been completed. The lifts are accomplished using the shipyard's 1,050-metric-ton gantry crane, one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere.
