Khalifa Port: Beach to Busy Terminal in One Year
In just one year, Khalifa Port has gone from a pristine stretch of reclaimed land four kilometers out to sea, to busy hub port serving 17 shipping lines, offering 18 direct services with direct links to more than 40 ports. Khalifa Port which was delivered on time and under budget, commenced commercial operations on 1 September 2012 and was officially inaugurated by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, on 12 December 2012.
Container Fire-fight Continues Aboard 'Maersk Kampala'
The 'Maersk Kampala', situated south of the Suez Canal, continues to fight a fire in the two foremost cargo bays of the vessel. Crew are all accounted for and safe in the accomodation area with no injuries reported. The owners report that the ire originated in one container at the bottom of a stack before spreading to a second container. On Friday evening into Saturday late morning weather conditions prevented fire fighting tugs from getting close enough to have maximum effect.

Jean-Christophe Deslarzes has been appointed by ABB to its Executive Committee as Head of Human Resources as of Nov. 15, 2013. He succeeds Gary Steel, 60, who will retire at a date that is still to be determined. Deslarzes, a 49-year-old Swiss national, has served for the past three years as Chief Human Resources and Organization Officer and member of the Executive Board at the global retail group Carrefour. Suez Canal Terrorists Attack Passing COSCO Container Ship
The Panama-flagged container ship 'Cosco Asia' has been targeted by terrorists attempting to block the vital canal system, but the attack was foiled by the Egyptian Army, reports Al Jazeera, citing a statement by the Head of the Suez Canal Authority. The statement did not specify what kind of attack it was, but shipping sources informed the Reuters news agency they heard the sound of two explosions as the ship passed through the waterway.

McDonough Marine Service announced the launching of another new barge MARMAC 304 (300’ x 100’ x 20’), the third in a series of new ABS ocean classed deck barges commissioned by the barge and tug company. The barge was built for McDonough Marine Service by Signal International in Orange, Texas. The MARMAC 304 barge was designed with an ABS Load line maximum cargo capacity of 13,200 short tons and uniform deck strength of 4,500 lbs/sq. ft.

ZIM Introduces CGX Service in New Orleans
ZIM Integrated Shipping Ltd. formally introduced a new weekly container shipping service to the Port of New Orleans' Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal. Two Safety Updates from USCG
The Coast Guard issued a safety alert to personnel and the maritime community warning of the potential dangers of confined space entries. In the first case, an inspector was on board a tank vessel to conduct a Port State Control Examination. In anticipation of the examination, the crew opened the hatch to the Freefall Lifeboat to let it air out. As the Inspector entered the lifeboat his gas meter alarmed and he quickly exited.
