Campbell Acquires Barges, Towboats from ACBL

Campbell Transportation Company, Inc. said it has signed an agreement with American Commercial Barge Line LLC (ACBL) to acquire certain affreightment contracts along with 155 barges and four towboats that will operate on the Ohio River system. Campbell said it expects to close the transaction by the end of the second quarter, subject to customary closing conditions. Once the acquisition has been completed, Campbell will own and/or manage more than 1,100 barges and 50 towboats on the inland waterways, along with four shipyard facilities and a marine construction company.

U.S. inland vessel management company Inland Marine Service (IMS) said it has taken on Campbell Transportation Company as its latest client. A fully integrated marine services company, Campbell is currently undergoing an acquisition with American Commercial Barge Line. Once completed, Campbell Transportation will own and/or manage more than 1,100 barges and 50 towboats on the inland waterways, along with four shipyard facilities and a marine construction company, moving over 60 million tons of product annually.

Campbell to Christen New Towboats, Drydock

Campbell Transportation, Inc. announced today that it will christen two newly built state-of-the-art towboats and a drydock on Tuesday, June 25. This marks the first new vessel construction in Pittsburgh in 30 years, a significant investment that will help create jobs and benefit the economy. EPA Awards $1.15m to the Port of Pittsburgh

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented a check for $1,156,838.00 to the Port of Pittsburgh Commission (PPC), in Pittsburgh, on July 28, 2010. The federal funds will be matched by $1,970,964.00 in private funds by Campbell Transportation Company (CTC), Consol Energy (CE) and River Salvage, Inc. (RS) for a total of $3,127,802.00. The funds will be used to re-power eight old engines and generators on four towing vessels, with new, cleaner burning engines and generators. The vessels are: the Tensas (CTC), the Sara Elizabeth (CE), and the Big Daddy and Anita Domino (RS).

Marine services company Campbell Transportation Company, Inc. (CTC) said it has completed the acquisition of certain affreightment contracts along with 155 barges and four towboats from American Commercial Barge Line LLC that will operate on the Ohio River system.   The four towboats, all of which are 3,000 HP, include the M/V Roger W. Keeney, M/V James R. Morehead, M/V James R. Pinson, and the M/V Jeffery A. Raike.    With this acquisition, CTC now owns and/or manages more than 1,100 barges and 50 towboats on the inland waterways, along with four shipyard facilities and a marine construction company.

Grant to Reduce Emissions at Port of Pittsburgh

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded a $1,156,838 grant to the Port of Pittsburgh Commission on July 28 to oversee extensive repowering of four marine towing vessels with new, more efficient diesel engines and generators that will reduce air pollution, improve air quality and lessen overall environmental impacts. The grant was awarded under the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act. “Putting clean diesel engines in these hard-working marine vessels will bring cleaner, healthier air for communities along the Port’s 200-miles of navigable waterways,” said EPA mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. EPA and the Port were joined by the Allegheny County Health Department…

MARPOL Training, Campbell Transportation: Training Software for Inland Vessels

MARPOL Training Institute, a California-based training and consulting company specializing in computer-based software for maritime pollution abatement, and Campbell Transportation Company, a marine transportation company committed to safe and environmentally sound operating practices and procedures, has developed an inland version of NPDES Training for Vessel Crewmembers (NTV). This comprehensive computer-based training software package, called INTV, covers the US EPA’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Vessel General Permit (VGP) for discharges incidental to the normal operation of commercial vessels and complies with the Best Management Practices for Towing Vessels & Barges developed by the American Waterways Operators.

U.S. Waterways: Greenhouse Gas Emissions Study

Acting for the National Waterways Foundation (NWF), the Center for Ports and Waterways at the Texas Transportation Institute, Texas A&M University, has amended their 2007 study, “A Modal Comparison of Freight Transportation Effects on the General Public” to include a comparison of  Green House Gas (GHG) emissions between inland river barge transportation, highway and rail transportation. The research team focused on Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions, which are currently the focus of the public policy debate on Green House Gasses. Using EPA parameters, the team calculated how much CO2 is emitted per ton mile for each mode. Emissions per ton mile are those emissions experienced in moving one ton of cargo one mile.

NWF Elects New Officers, Trustees

The National Waterways Foundation elected new officers and trustees at its recent meeting on October 3, 2007 in Houston, TX. Newly elected Foundation officers are Peter Stephaich, Chairman, Campbell Transportation Co., Chairman, succeeding Joe Pyne, President/CEO, Kirby Corporation, and Terry Becker, President, Riverway Co., Treasurer. R. Barry Palmer, WCI, President and CEO, was re-elected as Secretary. Re-elected as Foundation trustees were Craig E. Philip, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ingram Barge Company; H. Towboat Goes Over Dam; 3 Dead

Investigators from Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Pittsburgh are responding to an overturned towboat in the Ohio River, near the town of Industry. The Coast Guard was notified at 3 a.m. that the M/V Elizabeth M and three of the vessel's six loaded coal barges went over the dam and sank downriver from the Montgomery Lock, near mile marker 31 on the Ohio River. Local agencies and crewmen from several nearby towboats, including the Rocket, Sandy Drake, and Lillian G responded to the overturned vessel. Three victims were recovered at the scene. Three survivors were rescued and transported to Beaver Valley Medical Center and Aliquippa Hospital. One crewmember remains missing. Names of all crewmembers are being withheld, pending notification of family members.

River Bell Awards Acclaim Maritime 'Family'

The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) recognized two inland maritime industry leaders at an annual awards luncheon Thursday, December 11, 2014, in Paducah, Ky. The 15th Annual River Bell Awards Luncheon, hosted by SCI, raised more than $270,000 to support mariners served by the Institute’s Ministry on the Rivers and Gulf program. SCI presented the River Bell Award to Peter H. Stephaich, Chairman and CEO of Campbell Transportation Company, Inc.; and to the Chairman of J. Russell Flowers, Inc., J. Russell Flowers, SCI conferred the River Legend Award.

LNG Fuel: The Gamechanger that Cannot be Ignored

ARGUS: Enviable Technology, Unlimited Potential

Almost four years and 100 million soundings later, the concept is a reality. Almost two years after we first reported (December 2011 edition of MarineNews) on an innovative, depth sounding recorder device that made wide swaths of data available to perhaps anyone who wants it, the concept envisioned by ARGUS has developed into a viable tool that could change the way that government agencies schedule surveys and dredging.

This Day in Coast Guard History – Feb. 22

1943- The USS Campbell, CG, under the command of CDR James A. Hirshfield and assigned to the international escort group A-3 that was escorting Convoy ON-166 through the North Atlantic, engaged numerous submarine contacts during a running battle across the sea. Campbell's attacks damaged at least two U-boats. The cutter also rescued 50 survivors from a torpedoed Norwegian freighter. Then, on 22 February 1943, as the Campbell returned to the convoy after rescuing the Norwegians, it detected a radar contact closing the convoy. The Campbell raced toward the target and soon made visual contact. It was the surfaced U-606, earlier disabled by a depth charge attack delivered by the Free Polish destroyer Burza. The Campbell closed to ram while its gunners opened fire.
