Chevron Shipping Awards Oil, LNG Contract to GAC

US-based Chevron Shipping Company (CSC) has awarded  the Dubai-based GAC Group a global three-year ship agency contract for both crude and LNG vessels. The new agreement secures the provider of shipping, logistics and marine services GAC’s status as Chevron’s exclusive global agent in a partnership that spans more than 20 years, more than 15 of which have seen GAC as its sole global agent. Operations will be overseen by GAC Hub Agency offices in Dubai, Houston and Singapore with support from GAC’s network of offices and approved agents worldwide.

Newbuild AWILCO LNG Carrier Sold to Teekay, Chartered Back

The vessel, according to AWILCO was subsequently sold to Teekay LNG Partners L.P., and bareboat chartered back by Awilco LNG for a period of four years plus a one-year extension option in AWILCO LNG’s favor. AWILCO LNG is a Norwegian based pure play LNG transportation provider, owning and operating LNG vessels intended for international trade. The Company currently owns two 156,000 cbm DFDE membrane LNG vessels; WilForce and WilPride, and three 125,000 cbm steam Moss type LNG vessels; WilGas, WilPower and WilEnergy.

LNG Ship Sails off Shipyard

According to Xinhua, China's first liquefied natural gas(LNG) ship sailed off shipyard Wednesday in Shanghai, marking China's shipbuilding industry stepping into a new era. Sources from the China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) said the LNG ship was built by CSSC's Shanghai subsidiary, the Hudong-Zhonghua shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd, which fills a blank in China's shipbuilding history. The LNG ship is regarded a high-tech product with high-added value in the shipbuilding industry, which can only be built in Japan, the Republic of Korea and several European countries. To share a cake of the global market, China input more than 100million yuan on the research of the LNG ship in the past years andmake effective its first contract for LNG vessels in August, 2004.

Korean Shipbuilders Gain Brunei LNG Carrier Order

Brunei Gas Carriers Sendirian Berhad, BGC has entered into an agreement for the construction of a new LNG Vessel with Hyundai Heavy Industries Limited of the Republic of Korea and arranged financing with both local and international financial institutions. The Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister's Office in his speech said that the signing was important to the country as it signified many other additional achievements and creates new opportunities for Brunei Darussalam's shipping industry and the oil and gas industry as a whole. FLEX LNG Orders Third LNG Vessel

FLEX LNG ordered its third 90,000 cubic meter (3.1 MMcf) SPB liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel this year from Samsung Heavy Industries. LNG Vessel to Join Qatargas Fleet

Qatargas announced the naming of the Q-Flex LNG vessel Tembek at a ceremony held at Samsung Heavy Industries shipbuilding yard in Geoje Island, South Korea. The Tembek will be used to ship LNG produced by Qatargas 2's Train 4 to customers in Europe. It is one of 14 ships that are being built in Korea to service Qatargas Trains 4 and 5. The LNG vessel is owned through a joint venture between Qatargas Transport Company (Nakilat) and Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG), from which Qatargas will charter the vessel. Naomi Campbell officially named the ship the fourth of 45 large LNG ships to be delivered for Qatar at the event presided over by Ahmed Al Khulaifi, Qatargas Chief Operating Officer - Commercial & Shipping.

Fosmax Mulls LNG Bunkering at Fos Cavaou

France's Fosmax LNG has announced that it is considering making short/medium-term investments to modify its existing facilities to make them capable of receiving both existing and planned small scale LNG vessels at the Fos Cavaou LNG terminal, near Marseille. Fosmax, a unit of Engie’s Elengy,  says that while the use of small-scale  Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is generally growing as both a marine and road fuel, as well as to power industrial sites, in the Mediterranean basin the growth prospects for LNG are mainly driven by the development of LNG as a marine fuel.

Faststream Warns of LNG Staff Shortages

Shipping recruiter Faststream warns that shipowners taking part in the LNG vessel order spree could face serious difficulties in finding experienced superintendents to run these vessels in the coming months and years, particularly in Europe. The UK-headquartered company says that it has already seen triple the number of vacancies for shore-based technical staff with LNG vessel experience in 2011 compared with the whole of last year. Group CEO Mark Charman said, “With the capacity of the LNG market said to rise from 300 bn cu m to 380 bn cu m by 2015, I believe that shipowners are going to be hard pressed to find the right people to manage these complex vessels.

Keppel to Sign Golar LNG Conversion Contract

Keppel Shipyard enters into a term sheet agreement with Golar LNG regarding the conversion of three LNG vessels. Keppel Shipyard Ltd (Keppel Shipyard) has entered into a term sheet agreement with Golar LNG Ltd (Golar LNG), to work together on the conversion of up to three LNG vessels into Floating LNG (FLNG) vessels. This term sheet agreement requires Keppel Shipyard to start with a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study to confirm the engineering and work scope. Upon completion of the FEED study, Keppel Shipyard will then proceed to work with Golar LNG on the conversion and engineering of the first of the three FLNG vessels. There will be an option to convert the other two FLNG vessels at a later date.

Qatar's Nakilat to Order LNG Vessels

According to reports, Qatargas Transport Company (Nakilat) is expected to order a further 9 to 11 LNG vessels for RasGas-3 and Qatargas-4 this year. At the beginning, Nakilat activities were primarily focused on securing partial ownership of between 30 and 60 percent of the original 29 LNG vessels ordered. This was equal to approximately 54 per cent ownership of the first tranche of ships. This change in strategy, he said, required Nakilat to fund the additional construction costs of these 100 percent owned ships in order to meet the Qatargas and RasGas ship delivery schedules. In order to meet its payment obligations to the Korean shipbuilding yards Nakilat is obligated to cash call the remaining equity contribution from its shareholders this year.

SUEZ Announces Agreement With MarAd

SUEZ Energy North America's subsidiary, SUEZ LNG NA LLC announced an agreement with the U.S. Maritime Administration designed to begin generating employment opportunities for U.S. mariners onboard liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels. The transport of LNG between countries to meet natural gas needs is a burgeoning international industry, with the international (privately owned) LNG shipping fleet growing at a rate of 15-20% a year. Today, all LNG ships worldwide are flagged under non-U.S. countries. SUEZ' ships, for example, are flagged primarily under Norway and Spain. As a result, there are no U.S.-licensed mariners on these vessels, and the U.S. shipping industry does not currently share in this growing job market.

First LNG Vessel Transits Expanded Panama Canal

Today, the Panama Canal marked another milestone with the transit of the first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier through its expanded locks. Shell-chartered Maran Gas Apollonia—measuring 289 meters in length and 45 meters in beam—arrived Monday from the Sabine Pass LNG Terminal on the U.S. Gulf Coast, signaling the arrival of the highly-anticipated segment to the waterway. “The transit of the first LNG vessel through the new Panama Canal locks is a milestone in the waterway’s history,” said Panama Canal Administrator and CEO Jorge L. Quijano.

NYK to Jointly Own LNG Carrier for Cameron Project

NYK, the Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), Toho LNG Shipping Co., Ltd. (Toho LNG Shipping), and Tohoku Electric Power Co., Inc. (Tohoku Electric Power) will participate in the joint ownership of a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel for the Cameron LNG project in the U.S. through the jointly owned company Diamond LNG Shipping 3 Pte. Ltd. (DLS-3). In December 2015, MC reached agreement on a shipbuilding contract with MI LNG Company Limited in addition to a heads of agreement for time-charter party with Diamond Gas International Pte.

Nakilat Takes LNG Carrier In-House

Qatar Gas Transport Company (Nakilat)  has assumed full ship management and operations of Q-Flex LNG carrier Al Sheehaniya from STASCo (Shell Trading and Shipping Company) with effect from 6 July 2017, as part of the planned and phased transition announced on 19th October 2016. With a cargo carrying capacity of 210,200 cubic meters, Al Sheehaniya is wholly-owned by Nakilat and chartered by Qatargas. The vessel built in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering was delivered in February 2009 and has been in service ever since.

Wärtsilä has signed a long term service agreement with Maersk LNG. The agreement includes maintenance planning, condition & performance monitoring, co-ordination and supply of technical services, parts and service work for five 165,000 cum LNG vessels equipped with Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines over a five year period. "For Maersk LNG, this service agreement means improved levels of certainty regarding servicing of the main engines on our LNG vessels. With this monitoring system in place, maintenance work can be proactive," said Claus H. Thomsen, Director, Maersk LNG.

LNG Carrier for Drydock in Damen's Brest, France, Yard

Damen Shiprepair Brest (France) gets its first order to drydock large LNG carrier for repairs. The Bonny Gas Transport-owned, 79,822 DWT ‘LNG SOKOTO’ has arrived at the yard for maintenance work, including drydocking. Jos Goris, managing director of Damen Shiprepair Brest, says: “We are very pleased with this order and we expect more LNG vessel owners to follow. The yard’s workforce is experienced in repairing LNG vessels and it is good to see this business returning to Brest”. The vessel is managed by London-based Shell International Trading & Shipping Company Ltd.

GE Electric Propulsion Equipment for LNG Carriers

GE’s Power Conversion business has received a new order from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. for electric power and propulsion systems for two LNG carriers. The LNG carriers will be built for the purpose of transporting LNG from Louisiana, U.S.A. Their construction is scheduled to be completed from 2017 through 2018. According to GE, from the perspective of improved performance, electric propulsion technology is optimal for LNG carriers. OSG Names Largest LNG

Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc. has named the LNG Carrier Al Gattara, marking a new generation of Q-Flex Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers, said to be the world’s safest, most advanced and largest ships to transport this critical energy source. This vessel is the first in a series of four sister ships to be delivered to OSG Nakilat, the joint venture between OSG and Qatargas Transport Company (Nakilat). GE to Provide Maintenance to TMS Cardiff Gas’ LNG Fleet

GE’s Marine Solutions and TMS CARDIFF GAS Ltd. have signed a service agreement that will see GE undertaking the support and maintenance of four TMS LNG vessels—Corcovado, Kita, Palu and Yari—for the next 10 years. GE will provide maintenance services to TMS fleet’s electric propulsion system, including providing parts to the propulsion motors, medium-voltage drives, generators and switchboard. It will also upgrade the vessels’ propulsion automation systems to enhance their remote and diagnostic capabilities.

Agreement Means New Jobs on LNG Tankers

New seafaring jobs on Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) vessels will go to Americans licensed as ships’ officers under an agreement reached between the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Shell International Trading Company. Under the agreement, Shell becomes one of the first major oil producers to actively recruit American seafarers for its growing fleet of 25 new LNG vessels, all of which will be put into service in the next four years. “The growing worldwide demand in the LNG industry creates a significant opportunity for the U.S. maritime industry," said Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton. LNG vessels are the fastest-growing segment of the international shipping industry, and require highly skilled seafarers to crew them, Connaughton said.
